He doesn't need to bring them on trial to do that. If they were players he had targeted, he surely knew all about them through 'scouting' and word of mouth. The only reason we'll be bringing in loan trialists is because stuart knows next to nothing about them, meaning the ones he really wanted have gone out the window.

Really important season for Paudie this. He's no longer the fresh 21yo we had on loan. At 23 he now needs to really establish himself as a senior pro. I think he is up to it and we've looked better when he's played but incidents like the red v FGR do not help

It was the same for Connor Wood last season - he test he passed with flying colours

 

It’s not tough on Tyler at all. This chap isn’t just going to walk into the team. It’s up to Tyler to keep the shirt now he knows he’s got competition. It’s healthy.

 

Can see why Stuart's comments have been interpreted in the way they have but I don't for one second believe Stuart wasn't aware that Evans had become a different player to the striker we had many years ago. Stuart said the following in the T&A the day after Evans signed:

“There’s no doubt he can still play as a striker in a two, he’s intelligent enough and his runs are good,” added McCall. "He can play as a 10, he can play as an attacking midfielder, he can play wide in a three coming off the line. And obviously, not that I will use him there, but he had a full season at wing-back when Pompey got promoted."

Seems to me that Stuart is saying, maybe not in the best way, that they've tried a few different things with Evans in training and midfield looks the best option. Wherever he plays, a player with the attitude and experience that Evans brings is welcome.

That article reads like the targets to replace Vaughan are going tits up (shock), so the club are getting us used to the fact Guthrie will be a regular this season when we inevitably fail to bring someone else in.

 

Matty Blair would be a great signing in my view.

Utility - tick. Very valuable players to have around, especially when injuries and suspensions happen. Even sending offs within games.

Experience - tick. You need players who have been there, seen it, done it. He’s played 400 career games. That experience is invaluable. Think of Gary Liddle when he signed for us - a similar number of games and he was key for us.

He’s also spent the last 8-9 years in League 1 & 2, including two promotions that I can see - he will know exactly what it’s all about, especially on those difficult wet Tuesday nights.

If he was at Doncaster then I guess he lives locally too. Bring it on I say.

 

Ok, my friend who is a big Chesterfield fan and also has close Mansfield contacts says the situation across the M1 is still suggesting 2 clubs being in for Danny Rose - I think one of them might be us but whatever its at least a sort of rumour which is what this thread is supposed to be for!

 

I'm happy saving money for an emergency, it's sensible planning. My problem is that I define an emergency as not having a single right back in my squad.

 

I see from the T&A this morning that there are some really positive signs with regards to recruitment. Apparently, we've moved on from seeing what crops up to throwing our hat into the ring.

 

My mates a Bradford fan and he said the same.

 

And Stuart also confirms, as if we didn't know, that there'll be no set formation or personnel. So just as before we'll be reacting to the opposition rather than playing our own game. And playing lots of different systems. He just never learns.
