Shimla Spice has historically always been good. Few years since I’ve been though.

The Bird restaurant in Guiseley which has just opened. Possibly the best curry I’ve ever had. They do a railway curry and the lamb melted in my mouth. Very authentic Indian. It’s a must try if you’re local.

Another impromtpu curry last night and somewhere else I'd never been before. Bhajis and Beer near Greengates traffic lights. It was very good, highly recommend it.

Just booked for a night at Shibden Mill Inn for wife's birthday on 21st Feb. £245 for a superior double room, breakfast, plus £40 each towards dinner.

Last time we went was pre-pandemic, so looking forward to seeing if it's still as good as it was last time. I'll report back here afterwards.

    Not really,
Knock off the 80 quid towards dinner included in the price and it’s £165 for bed and breakfast for two at a top quality country inn/hotel. Not sure where you think you’d get anything of that standard any cheaper.
Jeez, we’ve had to pay over £100 for room only in a Premier Inn before now, in other parts of the country. It looks like a bloody bargain compared to that.

Just read the whole thread for the first time and I'm salivating. A plethora of ideas for places to sample haute cuisine. Never realised the forum was stacked full of bon viveurs.

I occasionally have the Eggs Benedict at Guiseley Morrisons. Very nice.

Hash browns are Beelzebub's handiwork. Appalling American nonsense. No place whatsoever on a full English. I invariably ask for more of something else instead. Preferably fried bread, which I love.

Bubble & squeak. Now you're talking! Proper breakfast food.
It's a tradition in our house to make the breakfast bubble on Boxing Day with the leftover sprouts, roasties and parsnips from Christmas dinner. Lovely.

I went there once............. there is the stripped back/industrial design and taking the piss, they were the latter, I didn't appreciate walls made from OSB, was a joke (I hope).

Went to The Doghouse in Leeds yesterday, I actually went in the bar next door but the outside space appears to be shared and I was pissed...again. Comfy sofas, laid back vibe, all ages, rammed. Bizarrely, I noticed a framed pic of the cup winners from 1911! Not sure which bar it was in, The Doghouse or next door.

Over the years I have been in the City Gent (as was) about half a dozen times. A lot more space than the Sparrow! I think you are spot on, it needs to be ‘horses for courses’, look to create a feel, which lends itself to the interior. It would be somewhere that could celebrate various sorts of Jazz and perhaps some small ‘unplugged’ gigs. As has been said the interior of the building, in particular the pillars and the ceiling are stand out features.

The Myrtle Grove Bingley. The very last time I have a chain pub meal, I keep saying it, but what's the point in them? They are garbage, ok they fill you up, but a £1 back of 2 minute microwave rice can fill me up..............and taste better.

Wednesday lunch, about 2:30pm, I had fish and chips (again), the first thing that struck me as both meals were plonked down is that nobody gives a fook, how can any normal person serve a "square" of "mushy peas"? They can't, but my "mushy" peas were scraped from somewhere, assembled into a perfect square and served, rock hard. A few chips were scattered about the empty space on the b.i.g plate, fish batter was also rock hard and the fish tasted a bit like a fish. I had to go nick a condiment holder from another table, then go looking for another with some salt, then another with ketchup........

Mates cheese and ham panini was pitiful, like somebody had aimed hairdryer at it for a couple of minutes, it was still soggy and white, he had plenty of chips, but he hadn't ordered any as he'd requested a salad instead............

Probably the worst soulless food that I've ever eaten, yet the place was rammed and I noticed The Ferrands Arms opposite boarded up.........

Positives:- C.H.E.A.P! 2 meals and 2 pints came to about £13/14 and I was full.
Negatives:- Was all garbage and the entire place, bar, tables, carpets, toilets, all bleedin filthy..

Agree about the tasting menus. They can be an exhausting and expensive exercise of a chef's ego.

It's excellent, as long as you don't go expecting lasagne or spag bol & the usual suspects.

It's a bit of a destination restaurant given the 'rustic' and authentic approach. They love to feed, so go hungry if you do visit.

Quick mention for the b&b where we stayed just down the road: Park House. Smart place, very reasonable (70 quid a room) & top owners.

Happily, you also get 20% off at la Locanda if you're a guest here. You can take the boy out of Bradford...
