Quick review, as I can see that @abbomf@abbomf has recently gone to York and had mixed thoughts about his experience.

We have recently been for a day out and had lunch at Mr P’s Curious Tavern in York. It is a branch of Star Inn at Harome. We had a sharing platter for two @£25. My wife had a glass of wine and I had a pint of beer. An interesting building and set up on the very busy Low Petergate. When we have gone to York we have invariably gravitated to the Walmgate Ale House (formerly Melton's Too). Mr P's has a quirky interior, which suggests antiquity, but as it is a former shop, then the fixtures and fittings have been imported. The food we had was interesting and more than enough for two at lunch. We had already eaten some of the asparagus and cauliflower, when this picture was taken. If you like something different then well worth a visit.

I've had a drink in there but not eaten - nice place. The place down by the river - Star Inn The City - is another from that stable & one of my fave York spots.

Unsurprisingly we have eaten there as well, although last year. I remember thinking the food was okay, nothing stand out, the service was slow, but the setting and bright and airy use of a lot glass was excellent.
Many years ago we had a bad experience at the Star at Harome itself. Consequently we didn’t go for years. It then lost it’s Star! However circumstances then meant that we were staying at the nearby Pheasant. In the intervening period it had regained the accolade and our whole experience was one of excellence. I know that this was actually three years ago, so time flies!

    The Pheasant looks v nice. It's the Star's owner's ex-wife's place I think.

I think there was a ‘dip’ in the Star around the time that they parted and unfortunately that was when we first went.

Before it was elevated to the current status, we went to the Black Swan at Oldstead. Been on three occasions, excellent every time, however the prices now seem virtually out of our reach as a nights stay is essential. I have heard that they are going to follow the ‘Star’ path and open a branch in York!

Not been to the Black Swan, partly down to the price. I don't mind forking out for worthwhile scran but I'm happy with a Premier Inn to kip in...

Aye, "Roots" opens in September in York I believe. On the list.

Ate at Denmans in Shelf last night. While not pushing any culinary boundaries it's nice to have somewhere relatively local to get a decent plate of scran.

The Myrtle Grove Bingley. The very last time I have a chain pub meal, I keep saying it, but what's the point in them? They are garbage, ok they fill you up, but a £1 back of 2 minute microwave rice can fill me up..............and taste better.

Wednesday lunch, about 2:30pm, I had fish and chips (again), the first thing that struck me as both meals were plonked down is that nobody gives a fook, how can any normal person serve a "square" of "mushy peas"? They can't, but my "mushy" peas were scraped from somewhere, assembled into a perfect square and served, rock hard. A few chips were scattered about the empty space on the b.i.g plate, fish batter was also rock hard and the fish tasted a bit like a fish. I had to go nick a condiment holder from another table, then go looking for another with some salt, then another with ketchup........

Mates cheese and ham panini was pitiful, like somebody had aimed hairdryer at it for a couple of minutes, it was still soggy and white, he had plenty of chips, but he hadn't ordered any as he'd requested a salad instead............

Probably the worst soulless food that I've ever eaten, yet the place was rammed and I noticed The Ferrands Arms opposite boarded up.........

Positives:- C.H.E.A.P! 2 meals and 2 pints came to about £13/14 and I was full.
Negatives:- Was all garbage and the entire place, bar, tables, carpets, toilets, all bleedin filthy..

Shame about the Ferrands Arms. That was a cracking pub in its time.

The new cafe in Bowling park just up from Bolling hall. Not the sophisticated culinary delights that has been mentioned throughout this thread but I had . . . . . toast. . . . . and as toast goes it was fantastic. Kolos bread I believe. Oh and they made the smart move of putting in a real cappucino/espresso machine.

    The Olive Cafe Saltaire

Sunday, La Terrace was packed, I was happy about this as the paninis are about £8, it was my turn to buy and last time I'd seen a menu about 10 doors down at an Italian cafe that had paninis for around £3.50, Buonissimo Delicatessen. Anyway......I went in the wrong one and ended up in the Olive.......

I had tuna & red onion, Mrs Abbo had a something melt. They both came on oversized plates which made an already small offering look tiny. It said it would come with "with chips & salad" and to be fair it did, about 6 chips and some green bits, might have been rocket, it looked like rocket but tasted of nothing. We both agreed the paninis were blah and the chips/salad taking the piss, came to about £16 with couple of soft drinks, so only £2/3 cheaper then La Terrace where I took my mother yesterday......

It was full again so I thought I'd give The Olive another chance.................my mother decided on a vegetarian breakfast at £5 and mineral water, I ordered the same without looking at the menu and a Fanta Orange. A fresh orange turned up, never mind..............now I have had 100's of veggie breakfasts and they've all been pretty much the same, 2 meat-free sausages, 2 fried eggs, mushrooms, baked beans, toast, tomatoes and if you are lucky hash browns.

This one had some chips, wtf who has chips for breakfast? 2 pieces of toast, 2 fried eggs and 2 tiny pots containing 2 mouthful of beans in one and tomatoes in the other. No meat-free sausages so "Egg & Chips" it was then. Really poor offering and value for money, again on oversized plates, hot ones so that the little parcels of butter had turned to oil. Garbage, I won't be back for a hat trick of disappointments.

No wonder La Terrace is always busy, they've nailed it, attention to detail and presentation is always bang on.

Same owners, I think they still have bar 56 but the "chef" isn't there now. It seems to be family and friends in the kitchen. Complacent sums the whole thing up Really especially given local competition. They're lucky with location which does give good passing trade but for how long?
