Harsh to consider him a failure. Hes had some decent jobs and did well at Blackburn and Fulham. There is far worse out there.
Time to judge him is either Monday or in a few weeks. All these injury time goals could be forgiven and forgotten.
Regardless of Monday, he will get another crack at it unless he walks. Deffo gets another go for me and like you say - hopefully puts things right next season. L2
He has made mistakes but so have the players. Individual errors have cost us automatic ptomotion this season.

Hughes just doesn't learn.
For all his safety first tactics, barely any work.
Everyone in the box for free kicks, when the ball is cleared it just come straight back in.
Putting on another centre back when we have just got into the game to see us conceed a headed goal with no centre back within 5 yards.
The only thing Hughes has done that benefits us all, is saving us a few hundred quid on a trip to Wembley to watch shit safety first football.King Cole, net blaster, Dubois and 6 others like this. -
mark Hughes has spent OVER 20 YEARS as a manager and achieved absolutely nothing in that time as he has sank lower and lower down the leagues trying to win something, When will the penny drop that he is not suited to football management and retire and admit he is out of his depth

MH has another year to run on his contract. So unless another club comes in for his services, he won’t be going anywhere. And rightly so. Yes his style of play is often frustrating, and his subs are sometimes baffling (none more than yesterday) BUT we’ve still had a fantastic season given our previous few seasons of abject failure. We need the continuity, I cannot cope with repeating the cycle all over again. Look at the pedigree that Adams came with, and it was catastrophic. It doesn’t always work out, let’s just persevere with mark and see who he brings in. Getting rid now is simply a roll of the dice that I am not prepared to support
If we don’t gain promotion next season, then by all means don’t offer him a new deal and we move onto someone else. But until then, he has my full backingbryan groom, Silverbantam, Allotment Bantam and 6 others like this. -

Speaking to one of the first team players this evening I got a fascinating insight into what it's been like within the camp this season.
Spoke highly of Hughes.
Very calm and not a shouter.
Said he's more of a face for the whole project.
Said Hodges did a lot of the work and was around the players a lot more.
Spoke very highly of both him and Trueman.
Came across that mental strength in the team isn't the best.
Said that the team weren't confident of winning once they saw the opposition warming up and felt the atmosphere from the home fans.
Mentioned Lewis not being himself.
To me that's down to strength of mind.
None of the players that started looked comfortable.
Might be why Osadebe and East improved us??
Time to take it all in and get over any doubts.
All 3 goals conceded were from our players losing their nerve.
Like I said, the conversation was fascinating and explains why the whole team who started the match seemed to freeze.Dennis, Bronco, Here's Johnny and 6 others like this. -
The interviewer should have asked: “Tell me Mark, do you think City fans should be happy after what they have seen over the two playoff games?”
What absolutely pathetic performance from the players and Hughes, absolute bottle jobs. 3-1 completely flattered us, Carlisle deserved to win 4 or 5 nil.
City fans are sick to death of abject failure, why should it be accepted?
I’ve watched some absolutely miserable games this season but that was a new record. I just hate how our players clearly didn’t want it as much as the opposition. Where is the leadership, the desire, the passion??
I don’t like singling players out but has their been a worse captain than Smallwood in recent history? How on earth was this bloke in the championship a year ago when he struggles at league two level. He’s the epitome of everything we are missing.
He’s not the only one who’s been pathetic this season though, plenty of other names need to hang their head in shame for offering nothing for 9 months.

The emotional madness as you describe it is to react as if this is just all about yesterday.
In Hughes after match interviews he has been saying we will learn and we will get better - for over a year now! At some stage in the near future it actually needs to happenBronco, JudgeMental, Gardscoigne and 6 others like this. -
However depressed any of you are about things remember you are a big club, easily the biggest in League Two. It is a dream job and a wonderful opportunity for the right management team. -

Please Sparkes, pull the plug on Hughes now. It's getting more depressing by the week at Valley Parade, can't take any more. Get shut of Gent too, his recruitment this summer has been the worst in living memory

Well I never expected this and what a name for league two. I mean that’s all I know so far but he has had a lot of experience at the top of the game.
Was obviously keen to get back into management as he applied for the job as per the article. Feels a bit like Rupp has got this one over the line more than sparks or is that me?
Anywya we can’t predict really but I do know if he can get the place going he could be a hero here and mayeb that’s the appeal. Plus at his age of 58 a few years as manager, build a side and playing style then move upstairs as director of football? Who knows but we probably needed an experienced man who can look at the whole club not just on the pitch. He could come in overhaul the whole club is Sparks let’s him? He’s been at Man City and Southampton two very well run clubs. Stoke.and obviously managed a national team so knows what it takes at the top. I hope he can replicate that here.Inspector, Brackenrigg, PuNknDiSoRdErLy and 5 others like this. -

Very surprising appointment, completely out of left field, but in a good way rather than in a Michael Collins way.
My concerns would be the standard of player he's worked with before compared with what's currently available and what he's been told about transfer funds versus what he actually gets to spend. The squad needs overhauling (again) and it's going to take some time and money to do it. He's definitely got his work cut out.
It's definitely a 'Season Tickets For Next Season Will Be On Sale Soon' appointment.Klepton, Morley Bantam, PuNknDiSoRdErLy and 5 others like this. -

Thought someone was winding me up at work when somebody told me earlier.
How on earth have they managed to keep this quiet over the passed few days
Interesting appointment to say the least and definitely the wow factor.
Let's hope he gets the full backing and the tools he needs

I've met Hughes a few times (box and aftermatch drinks in Cardiff as part of the Worthington's beer sponsorship for the national team) and he comes across as a quiet, thoughtful, thinking sort of guy. What he does have in spades, is presence. You can't help but think about his Man Utd and Barcelona days when he's stood in front of you, and it's pretty awe inspiring. I think Sparks must have been rolling on the floor asking for his tummy tickled the first time he met him. The interview must have been a formality. I just hope Sparks didn't go all giddy like he has done with his past appointments, and promise the world in terms of Chairman backing, financial support and all other stuff he's made up before. Hughes won't stick around long once he realises he's been stitched up.

Hughes out.
Knee jerk or not my mind was made up when he brought Platt on for Banks just as we got back into the game.
A one goal lead going up to Carlisle and it was clear from minute one that he was happy with the lottery of a shoot out.
Compare that to Simpson who was positive from the off and we absolutely got our just deserts.borderlescott, Bronco, Hulmebantam and 5 others like this. -
After the match I was ranting and scathing saying "Hughes out" "bottled it" "not good good" blah blah...
But after a good night sleep I can reflect on a season of progress, albeit falling short at the end. We must keep Hughes and the bulk of the squad going into next season. For the first time in years we can look to build in the summer with some quality key additions (some pace in the side!) rather than a whole squad overhaul which results in as many misses as it does hits.
Providing we can keep the key players from this season (Cook!!!!), trim the fat and go with a slightly leaner, higher quality squad next season, then there's no reason we can't progress 12 months on.
Hughes in. Up the chickens!RCarol, Silverbantam, Allotment Bantam and 5 others like this.
