I don't understand the fuss. We are a league 2 side. We aren't going to be able to play free flowing expansive football. We aren't light years ahead of other sides in this league in terms of our squad so you'd better get used to wins like this. Yes it was uninspiring but what is encouraging is that the result was never in doubt. We set up to be secure. The reality is we play that system against a mid table side and you are guaranteed a win. We play that game another ten times and the result is the same. We set up to go for the jugular and sure we might win 5-0 but equally we could get hit on the break and see it go tits up.

Sometimes pragmatism pays. It's about setting up guarantees but sure some of you know better. If we play like that every home game we will see the same return every time. Newport have some very capable players at this level (Amond, Matt, Dolan) yet we never looked in doubt.

Reeves was outstanding. Some of you need to understand that this is league Two. If you want your centre mid to collect, distribute, dictate the pace AND be a consistent attacking threat you'd best understand that this mythical being is not available at this level. We keep Reeves fit and on form and we go up automatically.

No. He is not there to protect the back four. We play 3 central defenders for that very reason. He is there to take the ball off the centre halves and carry the ball and distribute. As a result he dictates the play and is always there to receive the ball back from Cooke, Wood, Taylor etc if there is nothing on and then try again. He probably had double the amount of touches as anyone else on the pitch and as a result he starved Newport of the ball. His positional sense and first touch means that he is able to do this.

You don't understand his role do you? Otherwise you wouldn't refer to him as a traditional dm / ball winner.

In these circumstances, it all hinges on whether the ref deems the challenge for the ball as ‘genuine’ or the foul is ‘accidental’.

They’re still supposed to send off where - in denying the goal scoring opportunity - there was no possibility to play the ball, pulling, pushing, holding etc (plus handball). Plus, all instances outside the area.

So the ref yesterday has decided either (i) the keeper actually hasn’t denied an obvious goalscoring opportunity or (ii) he did, but it was a genuine attempt for the ball.

I’m struggling with either of those TBH, given the keeper seemed to grab around Vaughan’s waist (so not really a genuine attempt for the ball IMO) and looks like he would still have been in control of the ball (to put into the net, albeit defenders were nearby-ish). Personally, I think the ref should still have sent him off under the laws. I reckon though the ref has decided the keeper’s challenge was a ‘genuine’ one.

I sort of understand the amendment to the law - where they felt a red card as well as a pen (i.e. very likely a goal) for a genuine attempt to play the ball in the box was too harsh. The change was made to try and differentiate between that genuine attempt and a deliberate foul.

This is what still worries me. In the last 6 games in all competitions we've scored 2 goals from open play, one of which was an OG and the other a defensive howler. Some people seem to think that playing as poorly as we did on saturday and all season for that matter but still getting results is sustainable throughout the season. I'm not so sure.

Actually forgot about Devitt. Our midfield is up there with the strongest in this league. That and our CB’s too I think. Not many with better than us.

That’s our strength and can see why we are not the most free flowing attacking side. But we are doing enough and look a tough side to beat. All you need at this level.

I relate this to what How said about waiting to get found out by the divisions so called decent teams like what happened when we dropped out of the playoffs after McCalls sacking when in truth we never looked good enough for the playoffs.
This time its different, in this division there are no decent sides, after 20 or so games we've seen nearly all the teams in the division and from my point of view i've only seen one decent side and that was Crewe. Personally i don't think the standard of football will improve but thats a division wide thing, its just the same as it was the last time we were in this division, generally the skill levels are very poor and as such it won't take much to get automatic promotion. The team that shows more consistency in terms of results will go up.

Can't agree with that, Oldham posed us problems as an attacking threat. I've seen us play non league sides in the cup who offered more of a goal threat than Newport. One of the most negative displays of football i've seen for a long time, they made no attempt to get the ball down on a decent surface.

442 or 433 it doesn't really matter what formation we start out as if our only tactic is hoofing it to James Vaughan.

I really don't know why you're banging on about the 5 games. Two of those games were in a competition you yourself said did not matter and advocated getting knocked out of as soon as possible. One was the EFL trophy - nuff said. Another we got a point that's likely to get expunged anyway. When you boil it down your still really only getting your knickers in a twist over the Plymouth game. Go in a darkened room, have a good cry - you'll feel better and then get ready for Newport.

Mate, really sorry to hear this.

I know what you're going through and it's the toughest thing ever and I am only young.

If Bradford City win you might have a little cry but he will be looking down with happiness.

Here for you mate. DM(private message me) if you ever need to talk about it or would any help on anything.

I really hope we win tomorrow because after that little cry, you will have a little smile and think that's for you dad!

A good day all round we won which is all you can ask, yes I'd have liked us to have been better but 3 points was just what we needed.
    Plymouth lost
Northampton lost although Exeter got the 3 points Northampton were the form team.
Forest Green got beat at home.
Wallsall beat Port Vale another form team.
    Unfortunately Cheltenham beat Mansfield.
And we move up a place still with a game in hand.
    Now for a Joshua win.

That is the biggest load of tripe yet, from you Fordy …..

HOW in the Hell was ANY fan responsible for last seasons relegation ? To a man (and woman ;) ) each and every fan had high hopes at the start, and not ONE could or should be held responsible for what transpired.

This season, many predicted one of struggles, others mid table, and equally those who demand / expect Auto promotion. We are currently in a PO position, with an Auto spot well within reach - Which we all desire and hope for. So please do most of us a favour, and bite your tongue until at least April.

I actually agree with Fordy, to a large extent. We get the club we deserve. We tolerate mediocrity, we value 'getting stuck in' over flair, we have little real ambition and seem obsessed with keeping it cheap.

We're a small club, we just get large crowds.

Good summing up. I understand the double jeopardy aspect of it but the keeper should have been sent off. He's no chance of getting the ball and just brought him down. Imagine after getting his yellow card he saved it. We suddenly go from certain goal to still nil-nil with the keeper yellow carded. How's that fair? Even a red with the sub goalie saving is preferable (from their point of view) to Vaughan rolling it in. That's why he did it and thats why he should have seen red.

It’s certainly not entertaining, but I’d be worried if we were getting out played, that’s a sign that you’re getting lucky. Other than Crewe this season and probably Plymouth although that was our own doing, we’ve always looked the more likely team to win. The only 2 teams I’ve thought looked half decent this season were Crewe and Exeter, and we beat Exeter without them providing a threat.

I’m confident once injuries clear up we’ll be fine, and hopefully the entertainment will increase.

Yeah i like to be entertained Jon. A decent league 2 side would have wiped the floor with Newport on Saturday, i'm not give a team any credit whatsoever if they come to Valley Parade to defend a nil nil. And thats what Newport did, the fact they did for so long was more down to our incompetent set up as an attacking threat. if thats the sort of shite that Flynn serves up he makes Bowyer look like Pep Guardiola.
