Well let's hope that GB realises this. Maybe switch Taylor to the defensive player and let Cooke have more freedom to play a more attacking role. Seem to recall he has had a couple of decent long range shots this season so maybe if we can get him in a more forward position it may well reap rewards. Also he can pick a pass and would be able to play in Vaughan and Oteh giving them something to run on to.

I agree re the incident yesterday - I think that the ref has got the decision wrong, as opposed to him being correct according to the revised law if that makes sense.

In terms of the revision to the law, I can see where they’re coming from. Statistically approx 75% of pens get scored, so if there’s a genuine attempt for the ball in the area, to send the player off as well as, in all likelihood, conceding a goal via the pen (along with that player banned) seems possibly too harsh - which is why they adjusted the law.

Good summing up. I understand the double jeopardy aspect of it but the keeper should have been sent off. He's no chance of getting the ball and just brought him down. Imagine after getting his yellow card he saved it. We suddenly go from certain goal to still nil-nil with the keeper yellow carded. How's that fair? Even a red with the sub goalie saving is preferable (from their point of view) to Vaughan rolling it in. That's why he did it and thats why he should have seen red.

I did think he was trying to get the ball, but the challenge is very clumsy.

The argument can be made that in the end he was intentionally taking out the player, which should be a red, surely.

The problem with that rule is, he doesn't have to be careful - because as long as he sets out for the ball, it doesn't matter whether or not he wipes Vaughan out.

Any right minded keeper would go for the ball, while making ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN they stop the player. You effectively can't lose with the wording of the rule. Whereas as it was, the ball is the priority, not the player.

Any other players does it they walk, why should it be different for keepers.
This rule isn't making the referee's job any easier, we have enough theatricals in the game now the referee has to not merely make the decision if its a penalty but was the goal keeper genuinly going for the ball.
As I posted watching the replay there is no doubt the keepers intention is not going for the ball, Vaughan had dinked to his left and the ball had gone passed the keeper when he made the challenge.

Horrendous. Really worrying team selection and tactics. The lack of tempo and attacking intent from Bowyer is alarming. I fear us being in the playoffs come the end of the season. Need a team to create chances in case we go a goal down. We concede first this team is done against the stronger sides.

Not sure that we ‘starved Newport of the ball’? Even if l have no different stats, then those figures below, which are probably more objective than my own recollections, suggest that despite Reeves we only just had more of the ball.

Agreed on your first point - I think the ref interpreted this wrongly under the current laws and should have sent their keeper off. That was not a genuine attempt for the ball IMO given where he caught Vaughan (midriff, not feet and got there late too). The criticism of the law change is that it now permits a bit of a cop out for refs should they wish to take it i.e. given the subjective element, give a yellow and a pen when probably should still be red.

Re your 2nd sentence, sort of agree although this is the nuance you would want refs in the pro game to pick up i.e. firstly is it denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity and secondly was it an accidental/genuine challenge.

If a keeper comes out for the ball and doesn’t get there - assuming striker’s touch still takes them towards goal - I would still be looking for a red in most circumstances, given the keeper has full sight of the ball and player and so should be able to ‘time’ the challenge. If the touch by the player and challenge by the keeper at feet are almost instantaneous, then perhaps could be a case for the criteria for yellow instead of red being met, but would say that’s more rare.

It’s different IMO to a quick turn on a defender to be in on goal and the subsequent immediate tackle for the ball just missing, or similar, which would be a better case for yellow not red.

For me it was right to update the law, but as ever it requires the refs to implement it in the game as intended.

Does anybody know why the penalty was given by the ref? By which I mean, was it for a serious foul by the goalkeeper on Vaughan or was it for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity? The difference is an important one given what @StaffordBantam@StaffordBantam has posted.

Interestingly, the BBC text describes the yellow card being given for a serious foul by the goalkeeper in which case a yellow card would have been correct. A foul in the penalty area by say a defender wouldn't automatically give rise to a red card (as BRE well knows) unless it was for violent conduct or as required under Rule 12 . It looks to me that either the ref bottled it and deemed it a foul if the BBC is correct or made the wrong decision since to most people it was an obvious goal scoring opportunity with no attempt to play the ball.

It's exactly the same rule for outfield players, it doesn't just apply to goalkeepers. It's also been in for a few years now so I'm not sure why some haven't heard or seen it already.

The 'team' announced didn't bother me too much, in fact it looked 'refreshed' and adventurous. How it was set up and played however - was disappointing, which should have come as no surprise in truth.

Out of curiosity, NM ….. Do you (or others) know of instances where a 'keeper has been given a RED, and the double jeopardy rule brought into question in any appeal, and was the appeal successful ?

The BRE foul was not a goal scoring opportunity though although it could have been deemed violent https://www.skysports.com/watch/video/sports/football/competitions/league-two/11874641/macclesfield-1-1-bradford, the lad was going nowhere and that was the annoying point with regards the BRE challenge, I and most around us could not understand why the keeper didn't walk but as you say it was the referees call on whether it was a genuine challenge for the ball and not the player, it's not easy in the heat of the moment that's why I believe this rule makes it harder for the referee to make that sort of judgement, but in this indecent he got it wrong he defiantly played the man the ball had gone.

not the best screen shot but I think it shows the keeper no where near the ball and although someone posted on Saturday there were two defenders on the line this picture says otherwise.

On what grounds is playing 5 at the back at home adventurous? They showed no attacking intent, as soon as the 1st half was finished Ismail and Connolly should've come on. Any time in our history we been in the top 7 of the league and been so unhappy? Lack of creativity is going to kill us in the long run.

Definite red no attempt to play the ball. Keeper knew exactly what he was doing and was happy to take the foul as he was exposed. Awful rule, even worse when it isn't followed properly.

I never said it was a goal scoring opportunity nor was it it violent conduct or even a serious foul. It was foul play in the box for which the ref awarded a penalty and rightly didn't book BRE. I used the BRE example as one where a foul in the box doesn't automatically give rise to a sending off.

This is what still worries me. In the last 6 games in all competitions we've scored 2 goals from open play, one of which was an OG and the other a defensive howler. Some people seem to think that playing as poorly as we did on saturday and all season for that matter but still getting results is sustainable throughout the season. I'm not so sure.
