I think my company will do this , i would prefer them to make the decision now . I work for an American company , they are more focused on their USA part of the company . I also think a lot of companies wil use the pandemic as an excuse to shed part of their workforce . I've had to lose 20% of my holiday entitlement the government pay the other 80% so technically my company is doing jack shit for me and all the other furloughed workers , my CEO as taken a wage reduction of 20% which means he's only on £40k a month , but to be fair to other's in our company they have wavered the £2500 government guide lines , all in it together --- yep sure .

In this sums up why i am not a massive fan of Furlough as basically for many the government are paying people's wages and come August when things change then cuts will happen(if not before)

Companies will use it an excuse and downside making a lot of people redundant.

Quite obviously tens of thousands of businesses have been drastically affected. But for some of these, and others unaffected, it will be used as an excuse to make unpopular changes and job cuts, relatively blame-free

Some people have become comfortable with this generous package. It’s right to extend it but people will need to go back at least when safety measures are up to scratch.
It’s an unpalatable fact that this virus is here to stay and we can’t afford these huge sums for ever. Let’s hope the businesses who have benefited from this do everything they can to retain staff

Don't want to be made redundant in October when it's winter and possible second wave. Christmas with no money, I just hope companies do the right thing.

Companies will start issuing redundancy notices soon. If companies have to start paying, say, 20% of furlough wages to keep people away from work in August and their businesses are not running at 100%, they will start considering which employees they do need and which they don't. Statutory consultation periods are 30 days for 20-99 employees and 45 days for 100+. Redundancy notices will start going out in the middle of June to avoid struggling bigger businesses having to pay people not to work in August. If you are on furlough with a business that is not back to 100% (i.e.most) and get offered a choice in weeks ahead on whether to work or stay on furlough, beware that staying on furlough makes you much more likely than those that return to work to receive a redundancy notice in late June and July.

Also, it's worth noting that the cost of furlough for 7.5m employees is likely to be around £15bn+ per month and that money has to come from somewhere. It will likely be clawed back in future through austerity - wage freezes and pensions reductions for the public sector, service reductions in the public sector (including NHS so more people will die prematurely), and new and higher taxes for all. The furlough scheme is spend now, pay later. It's not free money.

The virus is not necessarily here to stay. They said on last night's briefing that infection rates in London and some other heavily hit areas antibody tested at 10% a couple of weeks ago and low hit areas at 3-4%. That would mean initial infections at those levels 5 weeks ago, so even higher now. London and some urban UK areas might be like New York and Stockholm where they are finding herd immunity effects are kicking in around 20% levels. (Perhaps our young are mostly effectively immune if they are finding the spread in a country like Sweden, without lockdown, saw new infections ease after reaching 20%?). This also means the virus is not as deadly as initial fears, though it has gone through more people than thought more quickly than thought. More blood antibody testing is still needed to have a better idea.

BBC said to share which is 50/50 in my mind but he hasn't said an amount.

He has just said he will be asking for employees to contribute from the end of July and it will be detailed by the end of the month.

    So it's not 80% of 4 months.

    Good post. Fully agree.

Those on Furlough who get called back into work should go back. Those not should worry. Worry because the company either wants to downsize or isn't generating enough money to get you back.

The government are asking companies to spend a lot to update their offices. That's a cost and it's a cost that's not generating money.

Those on Furlough shouldn't be doing handstands buzzing it's been increased. Worry because June/July will be key months. I see a load of redundancies and businesses closes myself. The government are paying for about half of the UK workforce. It's can't continue and in August it will be reduced from 80% and you're right before then businesses will want rid of people and not to pay out on wages for some.

8bn a month this Furlough is costing. It will need to be repaid.

If a company opens back up then its only right as many that can return to work do so. Social distancing will mean offices can't go back to full capacity though. Part time furlough should help with that I think.

Rotating staff working from home and in the workplace could work.

Pubs and clubs and restaurants will be the last to open I think. So they shouldn't need to contribute to more than the current 20% IMO.

One journalist just asked" your you going to be honest and warn millions on Furlough will lose their job?"

The covid office improvements will see people lose their jobs automatically.

Don't know Furlough short term fix, long term suffering.

    * looks like the Furlough message getting through. People now waking up and realising that from July employees will have foot the bill..businesses have no money coming in.

Millions are currently unemployed right now but just don't know it yet - grim.

TV saying they doubt there will be holidays abroad this year, the airlines can't stay in business if that's the case, the mayor of Benidorm was saying they need the British holiday makers back or it will be another massive blow after Covid-19.

Airlines are in deep trouble. Too costly to help also.
Government have also said airlines should be giving cash refunds back.

Seen that arrogant tosser from Ryanair on the news saying that they'll be aiming to still sell all seats on flights and that social distancing won't be observed on them.
