Good pre season under his belt and he is worth another go this year.

We are so quick to write players off.

Was a stop start season for most last year. Add to that a step up for the lad. Give him a chance

Part of football, we aren't here as a footballers nursery, he needs to start producing the goods and quickly. Always someone out there that wants his position if he doesn't want it. Step up or ship out.

Wasn’t Billy Clarke a shit Billy Clarke??
Give the lad a season, Stuart had no idea where to play him and his confidence dipped massively when he was publicly humiliated by his manager for diving.

Oh stop now. McCalls fault he's shit???

How many shit players do you think this squad can carry. It's players like this we need to offload not pretend he's going to be the answer. We've got an abundance of averagenss up front.

We’ve already give him a season and he’s wasted it. I’m prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt but i need to see a big improvement or we cut our losses in January.

Crazy to write him off after half a season. The second half of last season was a joke all round so not sure we can really judge him too much on that. I think the fans need to give players a bit more time to develop if this new youth strategy is going to succeed. Seems silly to write him off / sell him for a cut down price just because he failed to succeed in a poor season for the whole team.

I don't get this extended run argument you play do the business or someone else gets selected, within any 90 minutes you show the manager/coach what aspects of your game your good at.
If things aren't happening you must keep making the runs or possibly come deeper to receive the ball, if your not making yourself available you can't expect an extended run in the team until you find some sort of form.

Some players are able to drop in and out of the team with no noticeable difference others need games.
In McCartens case Stuart didn’t know where to play him he started the season trying him in a link position that Clarke used to occupy. He preferred to play Poleon up front because he plays on the last defender and despite McCarten doing quite well there at times he was always left out. The Bury match he finished the match playing there and scored a goal which should have won us the game. Then Grayson came in and went back to Poleon. Towards the end of the season after Poleon totally let him down and McCarten got more game time and was starting to do well.

If by "write him off" you mean fans calling him average based on a very poor first season, then they are 100% accurate and that assertion can be backed up with evidence. Nothing wrong with spilling facts. It's up to Mcarten to turn it around and show us he can succeed at this level because if he doesn't, even the ones clamouring for fans to show patience and to give him a chance will turn on him very quickly.

It's a bit weird how the blind faith approach only applies to certain players. Why don't we all get behind Poleon too?

To get the best out of players you have to recognise what position suits them best, based on the success they had at the club you buy them from.If you play a tactical game that doesn't suit a player then you can't expect more than effort and commitment unless the player can adjust.

Jones scored goals for Port Vale and they say now he would be welcome back. But he played on the right and came inside and scored his goals. He proved he can score that way so why persist with other positions if it's not working?

The other thing is we should have our opinions but also acknowledge middle ground. Why slag off a player whose played out of position?

It's not happy clapping or being over optimistic to be prepared to give players a chance.Who knows how good some of them could be with actual positive support. C'mon City!!

It works both ways though. I'm more than happy to give players a chance and give them positive support if they show commitment, desire and a strong work ethic, not so much if they appear not to care and come across as a bit lazy.

You mention Poleon how about Morris got injured early on then in and out the team and was poor at best. However he was a regular at Scunthorpe and look who that turned out.same with McNulty.

All you've done is add strength to my argument. Why don't those who are clamouring for us to get behind Mcarten also get behind Poleon, especially when there are examples of players who have turned it around such as Morris and McNulty, as you've kindly pointed out. I don't think that it's an automatic right for fans to get behind players based on very little, I'm just pointing out the hypocrisy and the fundamental flaw in the argument for the uber fans who do.

Would you be happy for Mcarten and Patrick to start the first game next season in the quest for giving average players a chance, or are you just saying it for likes?

I think we should give mccartan until January to see if he can produce. For me his best role is in an attacking mid position and city don't really play a way that position is used. I don't think we have played that way for years. With parky we used to go long and get the ball in the box to hanson. Now with Charlie Wyke in our team we aim to get the ball out wide and put crosses on the box. That doesn't really fit an attacking mid in that system. If Wyke is to leave and we don't go for another target man but instead get a striker who can move the ball and make runs in behind then I would hope that will allow McCartan to show us his worth. a couple times last season he made some nice passes through the middle but we need to see it more often and have consistency. If we had a pacy striker who isn't lazy I'd hope we'd see better from mccartan.
