Good pre season under his belt and he is worth another go this year.
We are so quick to write players off.
Was a stop start season for most last year. Add to that a step up for the lad. Give him a chance

Personally don't understand why some posters are just so negative when others share what they hear. Unless it's someone who is always wrong why not give them the benefit of the doubt at least? Just bashing those that share info isnt the way to go.BoingBoing, Inspector, Kevin1954 and 12 others like this. -

There are a lot of very talented footballers that don't make it, let alone don't make it in League One at the first attempt.
People seem to be very defensive when it comes to Shay McCartan because they can see the lad has talent - but he isn't a baby, and he just had the best possible opportunity to play for a side that invested quarter of a million in what they believed was a young, up-and-coming, sure-fire prospect.
What we found we had was a lad who lacked the fire to prove himself the best-of-the-best.
It's as simple as that.
Shay has looked like a relatively poor athlete (relative to our division), has shown fits and starts, hasn't impressed anyone to any great degree in training (he's never been a must-start), and really, the loan move to Lincoln makes a tremendous amount of sense.
Again, I am impressed by this decision from the club. They have absolutely got it right.
If Shay goes away, and this 'demotion' is the kick up the Harris he needs, great! He can come back and show that the fire burns. If he impresses just enough for Lincoln to want to sign him, so what? Another lad with talent leaves without fulfilling it, but I don't want to see people laying the blame at the door of the club - could they have done ANYTHING more for this lad?
What a huge chance he had to come to a side banging on the door of the Championship, and he, like so many other players past, future, and present, failed to grasp that opportunity.
No club will ever sign a lad for £250,000 at this level and NOT be more than fair to them.
Shay's failure is Shay's fault alone.
The story here is, he has the chance to put it right by running riot at Lincoln.JimmyBantam, Jam, Bantam Boy and 12 others like this. -

Along with Poleon, would be looking to offload McCartan personally. Would have to take a hit on the transfer fee, but so be it. I'm afraid the lad looks out of his depth at this club and level

How many shit players do you think this squad can carry. It's players like this we need to offload not pretend he's going to be the answer. We've got an abundance of averagenss up front.bantamdave41, Bronco, BoingBoing and 3 others like this. -
Think Collins has summed it up perfectly. He's got something about him but needs games and he wasn't really going to get them with us. Joins a good club with a good manager so hopefully he can find some form.
Wonder if this frees up a move for Matty Lund?Sheffield Bantam, Bantam75, Botswana Bantam and 3 others like this. -
He had 2 good games, scores against Beeston and everyone thought he was the next best thing
Personally can't see it myself and the 4th Division is McCartan's level.

You really are Chairman of the instant gratification club!
Well I am obviously in a minority of 1, when it comes to McCarten, but I don’t mind, I don’t normally indulge in ‘I told you so’ but I will take great pleasure in proving you wrong on yet another of your wild inaccurate statements.City-since-67, Botswana Bantam, Park bantam and 3 others like this. -

It's a bit weird how the blind faith approach only applies to certain players. Why don't we all get behind Poleon too?bantamdave41, Rogered Tart, bantam2708 and 2 others like this. -
To get the best out of players you have to recognise what position suits them best, based on the success they had at the club you buy them from.If you play a tactical game that doesn't suit a player then you can't expect more than effort and commitment unless the player can adjust.
Jones scored goals for Port Vale and they say now he would be welcome back. But he played on the right and came inside and scored his goals. He proved he can score that way so why persist with other positions if it's not working?
The other thing is we should have our opinions but also acknowledge middle ground. Why slag off a player whose played out of position?
It's not happy clapping or being over optimistic to be prepared to give players a chance.Who knows how good some of them could be with actual positive support. C'mon City!!bradgirl, Jam, Pineapple Salesman and 2 others like this. -
My view of Poleon is that he has decent pace and good movement. Found himself one-on-one plenty of times due to these traits, but his finishing lacked any composure. For it to happen once or twice is disappointing but for it to happen half a dozen times, is unforgivable.
With McCartan, my work colleague (a Stanley fan), said he couldn’t believe they got 6 figures for him, let alone £200k plus. He said the guy never looked fit and was often subbed off in games before the end. He said he only came good after Christmas and his free-kick goals helped him, but still couldn’t believe we paid so much for him.
My own view of him is that he didn’t ever look fit and I’m hoping a full pre-season will help in this aspect. Never got going for usbut did show glimpses that he is a decent player. Just has to be much, much more consistent.Stop hovering to collapse... Click to collapse... Hover to expand... Click to expand...bradgirl, Mason Handshake, Tolly856 and 2 others like this. -
Players have to be judged on what they show on the pitch and not their fee. If he shows no signs of Improvement it's time to cut our losses.bantamdave41, punk bantam, BoingBoing and 2 others like this. -

McNulty has done well in L2 and the Scottish 2nd tied, but has struggled at THREE L1 clubs. So what “situation” are you referring to? He’s STILL unproven at our level and just because he scored for fun in L2 doesn’t mean he will perform next season.
Morris had a great season at Fleetwood before signing for us. He didn’t get going at City because PP trusted Reid more and Marshall as back-up. But he went back to work with a manager that got the best out of him. My point is that it wasn’t just a 5mth purple patch with Morris - it was clear the boy had talent.
Marshall is another that you are looking at from a one-season perspective. Prior to joining us, he’d just had his best season at PV. He’d also been consistent at Barnet a few seasons before. Again, proving he wasn’t just a flash in the pan.
You comparing someone that had nothing but a good 5mths with players that have proven themselves more than once, is bizarre. And McNulty doesn’t even have a good 5mths at L1 levelStop hovering to collapse... Click to collapse... Hover to expand... Click to expand...Damo, FrenchBantam, Rogered Tart and 2 others like this. -
