Its more balanced with a back 4 and Donaldson and Vaughan up top, than the 3-5-2 served up today with the Oil Tanker in midfield, and Paudie stuggling again in a 3, like he did at Barnsley last season

it's not balanced though is it. it's square pegs and round holes.. today was paudie o'connor's 2nd match of the season and first for nearly 3 weeks, coming off no pre-season due to injury. i don't think today was on him - another who could be said is fit but not match fit / sharp, but that will only come with playing more matches.

One things for sure we have to play 4 at the back, it suits the lower league player. I can see why BowyerS packed the midfield, its been over run at times, but that formation today killed us from the off. We are lacking a Lewis O'Brien type player in the centre, get a player like that and we will see a big difference.

so if we go to four at the back and pack the midfield - which of donaldson and vaughan are dropped? i don't necessarily disagree that it could be a way forward but at this moment in time with the players available, do we have the players to play in the full-back and winger positions? however, if we do drop one of the front two the same people will then be moaning about only playing one up front again.

We go out, sign a proper midfielder (like we should have done in July instead of p1ssing about with Anderson and Devine)from somewhere then partner him with either Palmer or Cooke.

The wide positions are then taken by a combination of Devitt, Ismael, Wood and Pritchard which leaves JV and Donaldson (plus another we desperately need to bring in) for the striking positions.

I said Bowyer could not be judged before at least 10 games, basically a quarter of the season but after watching today I'm not sure if he can convince me he is the right man with 10 or so games.
Although as I commented Crewe were the better team the two goals were conceded because of very poor defending.
Kirk had acres of space on there left a similar ball played to him 10 minutes earlier that put him one on one with O'Donnel luckily he put it wide, second time it happend he didnt miss.
And as posted their second was a bit of quality from Lowrey but no one closed him down or tackled him, it was not as if he was in the box and it had to be a good tackle or it would have been a penalty, from picking the ball up wide on Crewes right he was never in the box but still not a challenge from anyone in Orange, poor defending.

Basically, Bowyer now has too many players to choose from and most of them not very good. He needs one of his two strikers to drop into midfield and break from there. Unfortunately, he’s got the wrong type of strikers to do that. He knows this which is why he keeps fiddling with systems to try to accommodate them.

 

devitt isn't a winger and wood has already said he's an attacking full-back but can play as a winger if asked to. so that leaves a current unfit ismael with no real pre-season action who probably won't be match sharp for a while and pritchard who was only signed yesterday and has only played 50mins so far this season - and we expect these players to play 90mins week in week out straight away.
