i remember the first pole i got, my folks bought me a Shakespeare one for a Christmas present when I was younger. I really struggled to catch at first using it on the canal, then I remember reading a thing by Bob Nudd, of Wogan fame, in the Angling Times saying that quite often with new gear you end up thinking more about the tackle than the actual fishing / watercraft. I thought it explained a bit my saga with the pole, I did eventually start catching with it and had it for a long time until I had a job and got a better one. But yeah, we all started with bits and bobs, I used to use porcupine quill floats a lot at first and then my mind was blown when you could get those clear drennan insert wagglers and such.

That's where I started fishing. Probably around 1960.

Thing is I would never want to fish with a pole.

If it was all about match fishing, I would stop fishing.

I do it for the solitude.

Bit later for me around 68
Remember there was some dog kennels opposite where I used to fish they never stopped barking
Am told there's a new marina there now with lots of big carp waiting for scraps being thrown in off the boats

that’s fair enough. It’s a great method though, not just for match fishers. Seeing people skilled with one on a canal or even more so a big deep river like the Aire or Don is quite something. But, I do get it, variety is the spice of life, and all methods have their day. Stick float at Newton Kyme, waded out, now you’re talking

is Field Sports still going? Guess Selby Angling Centre is?

Chris shut up shop about three years ago. A bit of an odd character but I got on well with him.

Adey at Selby Angling still going strong.

Bythe way im not knocking pole fishing, it’s just not my thing.

I like sea fishing and river fishing.

yeah, he was nice was Chris, always helpful when I was younger, I can still think of the smell that hit you as you walked in, that intoxicating mixture of groundbait and maggots.

aye, it’s like bait boats, just not my bag

Used to take my kids to the canal there. Around the marina the chub are like cricket bat's, up towards the lock past the kennels there were good carp bream pike and perch. Above the lock was good for tench.

Yes it would be great to visit again.

Near the rocks up towards the locks.

Was it a three lock rise? I think it was.

I'm Nearly sure the first lock away from the swing Bridge is called dobsons lock. There is an overflow you can climb down and virtually trot a float tight against the side opposite the towpath and under the trees. Good fishing especially for the kids

Just below the lock a guy next to me was dead baiting for pike but caught a 4lb plus perch. Still the biggest I've seen

this, funnily enough, got a mention in Trout & Salmon mag this month, in an article about Appletreewick, Barden & Burnsall AC, fishing the Wharfe just upstream of Bolton Abbey. The guy that wrote it was obsessed with his Wharfedale Linton’s or something, in the 70s.

Wharfe was always good for grayling whenever I tried. The hockey field stretch at Ben Rhydding always produced a trout or two and the occasional decent chub
