Definitely towards the back end of the 70s I'd say.

Have a picture of a fish from yesterday evening. Absolutely pissed off it was, like a runaway train.

No, we stock a limited number of rainbow and blue trout in the Storr Lochs and have been doing for a number of seasons now. Takes the pressure off the wild brown trout which are now catch and release, plus our competitions are rainbow only, 3 fish. I was fishing the upper storr loch which is mainly browns only but some rainbows do get through over winter when the level rises, as it is a hydro scheme. Feedback has been good. A lot of our members can’t get out to remote waters as easily, so it’s improved sport for them, plus visitors that don’t mind a mix of wild and stocked can have a good day. We have some nice overwintered fish and they fight hard, a brownie that size is a different animal though, but like rocking horse shite! They’re in there though. I got a couple of nice brownies last night, lovely colours and markings, round 10-12 inch.

You didn’t offend at all, I was just explaining why they are there. It is quite contentious, for every person that supports it, there’s always those that will have reservations about stocking them into the lochs. I go from one side to the other tbh, i think when i see the cormorants on there, there’s probably worse issues. Nice to see the large shoals of juvenile brown trout yesterday, loads of them were by the outflow.

roll on June so you can get back on the Wharfe

I have been a birder for 60 years now.

My difficulty with Cormorants is seeing both sides of that argument, there is no straightforward answer to a straightforward question it seems.

I will take myself to the Wharfe to quietly muse on the issues, maybe I will negotiate an answer, who knows.

Things are rarely straightforward and lets face it, we as humans cause most problems in the natural environment ourselves! The cormorant thing was raised as our older members have noticed the numbers increasing. but I guess if you put 1000 rainbows in, they might take note even though the lochs are pretty big! We’re a small club so have to invest what we have wisely and may stop if it becomes more of an issue. The otters will get their share, tbh you’d have to be a bit of a misery not to be amazed when you get lucky and see one of those on there. You muse away on the Wharfe, can’t think of owt better for the soul!

Randolph’s Leap at the Logie estste of The Findhorn. Looking upstream and down - stunning. The ladders and chains to help salmon fishers down the preciptious gorge sides - bucket list  only £120 per day in summer.

David Lammy caught fishing without a licence. Why isn’t he being prosecuted?
