    Conservative Party Conference Lunchtime Menu

    Money-glazed smirked ham

    Deprived shrimps

    Scorn fritters

Battered electorate, with a basket of crushed hopes and slow-cooked fatigue

Half-baked notions, idling on a soft bed of privilege, served with a thick faux pas sauce

Kids in blankets, deep-famished, with a deprivation of vegetables and a relish reduction

Toads in the hole, with golden hand-outs in a thick rich gravy (self-serving only)

    Eton Mess

    Fudge (ten different flavours)

Firstly, Labour has never been a Marxist-Leninist Party, whatever you might like to think.

But you're right. All parties have factions and there are power struggles between those factions for greater control over direction and policy.
Historically, British voters don't give majorities to parties that are openly at war with themselves. Major's government was booted out when the public disputes between 'the bastards' - ie the hardline right wing that is now in control of the party - and the 'one nation' Tories became too obvious. Likewise, Labour has been out of power since Blair and Brown in part because of factionalism, especially in the Corbyn era.
Starmer has played a long game. He's purged many far left entryists who joined in the Corbyn years and has avoided giving hostages to fortune by unveiling policy too early - especially since Johnson's government had a habit of nicking Labour ideas and claiming credit for them.
It was always obvious that Johnson would struggle to be a Prime Minister. He's far too egotistical, chaotic and morally bankrupt to lead a credible, competent government. He's a good campaigner but a hopeless leader, because he's primarily concerned with his own legacy rather than the good of the party or country. So it made sense to wait for his government to implode, which it predictably did.

Likewise, the Tory Party has now become so right wing it was always likely to replace Johnson with a leader who is completely out of step with modern economic thinking and the mood of the public - most of whom are sick of seeing their NHS, public services and living standards decimated and have no appetite for a new round of austerity under Truss.

Starmer has manage to eject or quieten many of the volatile elements in the Labour Party. Even those who would like him to be more left wing -eg nationalising water companies etc - are keeping their gobs shut and eating the popcorn while the hopelessly factionalism Tory Part eats itself in public.

It's all about perception. At the moment the perception is that the Tories are too busy fighting to be fit to govern, which is why they are 20+ points down in the polls and in an absolutely massive economic hole, which they just keep on digging deeper.

Is it? Have you read it? I think it sums up the current state of the government pretty nicely.

Sorry Dave. I thought you might have just glanced at it without taking much notice and assumed it should be in the Restaurants and Stuff thread. My mistake.

    Seriously? What are you smoking?
Truss, Braverman, Badenoch, Rees-Mogg. These people are as far right as it gets within mainstream parliamentary politics. Any further right than that and you're into proper Le Pen/Orban/National Front neo-fascist territory.

I'm still confused by why, if you read it, you think it's in the wrong thread. We've been having a long discussion here about the horrendous state of the government. So why is a satirical piece lampooning the government out of place in this thread? Was your comment meant as a joke? If so, I apologise for not realising that.

Ah I see. I never go on the joke thread, so I never thought of that. It is funny, but it's also pretty cutting, so I thought it was appropriate for the discussion on this thread.
