I agree. Always nervous on corners and free kicks around the box. Taken to crossing my fingers when they are defending set pieces.

There is a tendency to think that Carlisle are in the driving seats despite our lead hence the media driven ‘very slim margin’ comments. It is not slim or fat or anything other than a solid one goal lead. All season our away record has been excellent and I see no reason why that should change. Of all the teams in the playoffs we must lead on our away record?

Have to say I would be more confident going into the game either 2-0 up or 1-0 down
I fear MH may set us up to cling on to the 1-0 lead which isn't our strong point
We are a far better team when we actually go forward (take the shackles off)
Carlisle have to score at least once so let's make it they have to score 3/4 to beat us
It's going to be a tactical battle won or lost every bit in the dug out as on the pitch
    Enjoy!!!!

Would not be against going to a 3-4-3 or something similar. We need to negate the threat of their wingbacks who had far too much time and space and it also allows us to get some more height in the team because we're not the biggest are we. That would effectively nullify Carlisle who didn't have much else to throw at us.

That way, we also don't compromise on the attacking side of the team as we can still play all of Banks, Walker and of course Cook.

Wasn’t it Edmondson that cheated to get the freekick. It appears Simpson believes that’s their only offensive weapon likely to bring results.?

Far more faith in this partnership now.

Question mark over the ref maybe might come into it. He is someone Hughes has openly criticised this season for his performance at Mansfield away, giving Platt a very soft 2nd yellow card and adding on 10 minutes of time. He seems to be very whistle happy from a quick google of manager comments, also loves cards. He gave 24 yellows and 2 reds in his final 6 games of the season. Breaking up play a lot might suit the team in the lead more though?

I don't recall that. Carlisle's strength according to one of the Sky pundits is their ability to score from set pieces with one of the highest success rates from that approach. Much of the credit for that must go to Moxon whose delivery from corners is fantastic and who caused problems for our defenders. As one of the WOAP writers said, based on hard facts, we have the worst record in Div 2 for defending set pieces.

Surely we have a set piece coach? Someone who can help with nullifying the effect of Moxon and give the team the knowledge to defend corners correctly?

I bet we are not far of the worst at scoring from corners as well

    Will Platt return?
I don't think 3-5-2 is MH's style but maybe on this occasion he might consider it.
It would probably mean sacrificing Banks though.

You'd hope so! Apparently Hodges is supposed to do exactly that but the defensive stats show we're not good at it. My own view is that MH's reliance on zonal marking, which is widely used with success at the elite level, isn't something which transfers well to the lower leagues.

According to the records, it was 17th August 1985 since we last beat Carlisle at Brunton Park. So you would have to be in your Mid 40’s at least to have any memory of it.

The last time we drew with them at Carlisle, was more recent a 0-0 on Boxing Day 2019, however it was clearly seen as two points lost as Carlisle were ‘bottom feeders’ at that point.

Records are there to be broken.

Time for Andy Cook to step up, and the defence to deal with set pieces.

    It can be done.

The 2019 draw was the beginning of the end for Bowyer.
He settled for a 0-0 draw against a team near the bottom. It didn't go down well with those City fans in attendance.

FFS it isn't him is it?? Great. The Mansfield game was the most frustrating ending ever to a game, with regards to the inept performance of the ref. The only saving grace, is that you would hope he is the same for both us & Carlisle, and not one-sided

Que Simpsons contribution highlighting the ref’s flaws and in particular his ‘Homer’ credentials. Will an inept ref be more likely to fall for Carlisle’s feigning injury antics and give free kicks and penalties?

Totally cool with this game. Really believe we pull it off , as Carlisle are not firing on any kind of cylinder s, as I've highlighted before.
What gives me the optimism, is our squad of players.

Don’t disagree. Yes I just checked back. Edmonson dived, left hand touchline, in front of the Sunwin, towards the Kop. Gained a free kick . Replays showed he wasn’t touched, so a cheat in any sense,m to gain the freekick in a dangerous position. Anything for the advantage of playing to their strengths.

I remember going to the 1985 game very well. First competitive game after the fire.

    Very emotional day.

Are you sure it was Edmondson? Don't think he came on until the second half.
I recall the incident though. Stubbs was fuming.
