It's not the pandemic that's ruining him. I can't help him mate.

What has 'flu to do with the pandemic? For weeks, the mayor of Bergamo warned us of what the result of Johnson's inaction would be. It wasn't just his inaction but what was behind it. It is obvious that their discussions were based on the effect to the economy rather than the effect on people. We had as much warning as Germany. In January. the EU held a meeting to prepare action and equipment for the pandemic. the fact we are coming out of the EU was no reason not to attend. Whatever was best for us should have ruled.

Its critical to take all things into consideration , we are the most densly populated in europe , we have and ageing population . We have Private care homes basically bankrupting people who go into care and make vast profits , pay very low wages yet blame the Government for lack of equipment . Italy was in the EU they abandoned them , didn't they attend the meeting ?. The fact that when all deaths are recorded after the end they will be adjusted to take into consideration every cause , in 2018 28k died from flu yet no banner headlines . Look at the deaths from the Last few years from Flu and similar , the figures are striking .

Agree with what you say Offside but if we had a pandemic in 2018, we should have been better prepared now. All european countries are densely populated. For instance, Italy has so much mountain that 2/3rds is uninhabitable so they have close communities with an older and larger apartment dwelling population than us. Them not attending the eu summit is no excuse for us not to attend a meeting that would have been advantageous to us. For us to have more deaths than Italy is poor. They had nothing like the time for preparation that we had. Also, to stop testing when we did cannot be right.

There were around 50,100 excess winter deaths in England and Wales in 2017-18 - the highest since the winter of 1975-76, figures from the Office for National Statistics show. The increase is thought to be down to the flu, the ineffectiveness of the flu vaccine in older people and spells of very cold weather last winter.

So over 50s will be prioritised for the vaccine which is advancing pretty quickly. So presumably we will be allowed into grounds and the likes of @Fordy117@Fordy117 wont. How ironic that would be

No the vaccine isn't processing quickly but you're correct when a vaccine is found that you will be one of the first in the queue to get it while I will he one of the last.

It's amazing all this and I am starting to get lost for words.

Wonder why over 50's? Most of the boring MP's are over 50 that's why.

Enjoy VP while I repair the economy and you chill with a beer.

The vaccine has been researched with British goverment money and licensed to Astra
The vaccine has been researched in the UK at Oxford and licensed to AstraZeneca who are already producing millions of doses because they are confident of its success and millions more doses have been ordered around the world . Yes there is a way to go but it’s hoped they could be in use late autumn or before Christmas providing it lives up to its promise

I think we may have cause for optimism, now. The cases and deaths trends previously observed seems to be continuing as countries unlock. Those under 100-150 deaths per million seem to have signs of increasing infections and hospitalisations as they unlock. Those around 150-300 seem to stop improving but maintain a roughly stable condition or don't deteriorate too much. Those over 300 don't seem to show significant deterioration and often continue to see falling cases and deaths. This bodes well for the UK at 626. The pattern is most obvious between US states where lockdown relaxation is more consistent, although still varying somewhat.

There must be lessons in herd immunity here. The numbers are rough, though.

Iran is interesting. It locked down and has seen another wave as it unlocked but that is showing strong signs of plateauing. Pakistan is also interesting. Only 16 deaths per million there and the virus took off quickly again when they unlocked but they seem to have brought new cases under control again by running local lockdowns for hotspots. These seem to be damaging to the economy less.

I could be wrong but feel very optimistic that some high-infection countries are seeing significant herd immunity effects and no wave 2 yet, some mid-infection regions are seeing a modest wave 2, and only those countries with low infection rates are seeing a problematic wave 2, with Pakistan showing how it might be managed by letting it build but then locking down just the hot spots.

Just on the subject of herd immunity. My daughter is a NHS worker and her hospital have just carried out antibody testing on all frontline workers. They have been very surprised how few tested actually carry the antibodies, meaning they haven't had it, or the antibodies don't last.

My daughter had all the symptoms of Covid over the Christmas period, she had a doctor appointment (we usually get a telephone appointment) but she had to see the doctor on this occasion

During the appointment the doctor asked if all was well and she explained her illness over the Christmas period, what I found strange was his comment that if he took a test he was sure it would show she'd actually had Covid, why not treat her and if it was a positive result maybe those who she had been with might have also had it and fought it off.

Do you think that the figures from Iran and Pakistan are reliable?

Bronco, my wife was exactly the same over Christmas. All the symptoms. She can't remember if she could taste because she wasn't eating anyway. At the time we assumed it was a very nasty flu

Have we found patient zero yet? That would give us an idea of how far spread it could have been in December?

Like a number on here, I was fairly unwell from Christmas Day for well over two weeks. Spent a lot of time sleeping, with a fever. Violent headaches, but in different parts of the head. Off food and drink apart from water. Heavy cold, sinus, eyes not focusing, hot/cold sweats. Exceptionally nasty. Never had anything as intense, since Jaundice and Scarlet Fever when I was a teenager. I didn’t get to the Morecambe or Mansfield games and cancelled a planned trip to London. Not sure it was Coronavirus, but whatever it was, it was very debilitating.
