Wasn't there a rumour going around last season that the lad Threlkeld was having mental health problems, as many will know if they or any of their family have suffered with mental health problems they can't just be turned off, is Hughes trying to get him back in the right frame of mind, are some being too critical ?.

It certainly was and I, for one, am prepared to cut him a bit of slack as a consequence. He's not the best but he's trying to get his career going again and needs encouragement as long as he's with us, rather than the castigation he regularly gets. We know nothing about the personal circumstances of the players we watch.

 

One of their only clear cut chances on goal came from when he was out of position, got dragged in centrally where two players already were and their winger got a little poke through ball to the left touchline and ran straight into the penalty area and crossed it hard across the face of goal. Thankfully no one got on the end of it.

I know it's only a friendly but when he can't do the basics it's not great.

 

No, that's a terrible rumour to start or amplify (not aiming that at you personally but whoever started it). He had some struggles a few seasons ago and is presently an ally/partner to a mental health charity but there is no evidence of any particular mental health challenges since he has been with us. Someone has mis-read an article or made assumptions based on past history.

 

I didn’t see he match but friends who did said don’t believe what you hear Threlkeld played ok as he did at York. He needs to move on but let’s not use him as a scapegoat he is low in confidence as it is

@Dubois also remembers the comment #6427, good to hear any problems he might have had he has overcome as a sufferer at one time myself it was not a good place to be.

 

One of their other clear cut chances came from a mistake from Smallwood. I'm not trying to start keep Threlkeld campaign as it's clear he'd be better elsewhere but I just feel if anyone else played like Oscar on Tuesday night they wouldn't get the stick he gets.

 

A great point that should cover all players when being critical of performances. They're only human at the end of the day.

 

I think the problem is that he is TOO consistent. They aren’t one offs poor games, it’s repeated , that’s my issue. Yes he needs game time, something we can’t give him once the season starts.

Nothing against the lad but when a player isn’t performing to the standard required then there is only one option and it’s not in the game day squad.

 

You are right about the Smallwood faux pas.

 

But we have to have a scapegoat in our squad. Thought Hendrie could fill that role but it looks like he's out injured for a while. Hopefully we will be able to get a young Premiership scapegoat in on loan before the window closes

 

I have never heard Hendrie getting stick, cannot imagine him being the new scapegoat when we hit a bad patch
