We're getting there now, and while things probably won't get moving for a couple of months, I know some people (including me) like to idly gossip about potential signings and all that.

So I'll start us off with some players that (according to TransferMarkt) are out of contract this Summer.

Dylan Bahamboula - Statistically this hasn't been a great season for the Oldham winger, but relegation means he's almost certainly not signing for them again next season. Clubs like Portsmouth showed interest as recently as last year, and his poor statistical form may be down to this little gem: getting played in the wrong position!!

Not hard for City fans to envision how a talented player might not look quite so talented if asked to do jobs that don't suit them (ahem, Doyle).

    Interested?

Davis Keillor-Dunn - Another Oldham player (sorry...), but Oldham do seem to have a couple of talented players - it's just the club is a mess of incompetence from top to bottom. DKD has scored 16 goals this season for Oldham, 15 of those coming in the league.

    Interested?

Jonny Williams - Swindon scored a bit of a coup when they brought the Welshman to the County Ground, but injuries probably caused the drop to L2. If Swindon do not manage to go up, could Mark Hughes convince his compatriot to come to Valley Parade? While there would be an inherent risk, Swindon aren't renowned for paying excessive wages, nor have they struggled to get Williams playing: He's made 38 league appearances, although many have been as a substitute. Thought he looked class at VP.

    Interested?

John Marquis - Portsmouth let him go in January to Lincoln, and his form doesn't exactly guarantee Lincoln will offer him an extension in the Summer - if they don't, would this be the kind of move you'd like to see City and Hughes make this Summer? He's had a fantastic career, and always seems to work extremely hard, has good mobility, and aerial threat. This seems more feasible than ever, but does it remain an unrealistic option?

    Interested?

Go on then, those that like this kind of codswallop, put some names forward. All the miseries that don't like meaningless conjecture, well raspberries at you.

They aren’t the bargain bin buys I’m expecting Jon, but it’s always good to get our hopes up in the summer :joy:

Reece Burke from Luton and Johnny Howson from Boro would be a good base to work from
central defence should be the first priority

I know it's hypocritical after naming TWO Oldham players, but anyone naming Scunthorpe players should be ashamed :joy:

They were as abysmal at VP as their record this season suggests!!

Genuinely not being rude but do you honestly believe, hand on heart, we will purchase two players from promotion chasing Championship teams, whom have combined 70 appearances this season?

My opinion and WILL NOT be disappointed if proved wrong but the playing personnel will not represent anything close to what you have suggested.

League 2 cast offs... Now we are talking.

    We shall see.

I would like a huge chunk of ambition coupled with structure and patience.
But ambition has to be contextual in relation to financial reality, SCMP etc

    Agree with you 100
Not wishing to state the obvious, but we’ve been diabolically defensively this season and all good managers sort that out first.
Hopefully Mr Hughes knows this now

Some potentially less expensive players who have been doing well this season:

21 year old Ruel Sotiriou from Leyton Orient (https://www.soccerbase.com/players/player.sd?player_id=108565) - 7 goals in his 13 games as he suddenly finds his form in his breakthrough season. A good upwards trend ahead of next season for a young forward who is out of contract in the Summer (compensation would be likely, other interest possible).

    https://the72.co.uk/268944/will-ruel-sotiriou-leave-leyton-orient-this-summer/

23 year old Antony Evans has had a good season at Bristol Rovers and they'll struggle to hold on to him. He's scored 8 goals, and would be an ideal replacement for a low scoring midfielder like Callum Cooke. We'd be relying heavily on Mark Hughes being a major attraction, because Bristol Rovers aren't exactly a L2 minnow as it is, and are in with a shout of promotion. But we need to progress, damn it...

    https://the72.co.uk/269340/comment-will-antony-evans-leave-bristol-rovers-in-the-summer/

Jordan Turnbull, Salford's top defender, was named in the Team of the Year - if he's learned about United in his time at Salford, we can dream that Hughes will be an idol of his...

    LOL

It may not get universal (or any) agreements but Hughes will not rip this team up in its entirity this summer but build upon what we retain. As such, patience could well be needed moving forward.

Strangely, I feel this team have been 'better' more defensively than offensively this season, highlighted in recent times under Hughes.

I’d try get Jack Diamond, who has been at Harrogate, and Jack Payne, if Swindon miss out on the playoffs.

I’d get an experienced keeper who is dropping divisions but just wants to play.

I think most of the players in this league are much of a muchness though. We’ll probably get a few uninspiring journeymen ala Robinson and some back up quality squad filler like Kelleher, then plump up the squad with loan signings later in the window when clubs are looking to let players leave.

Wonder if we’ve burnt our bridges with Huddersfield after sending Daly back? They may well be a PL side again next season and could have lads Leigh Bromby is wanting to send out…..

No we haven't. We've been disappointing defensively, at times, but not diabolical. At other times we've had patches of defensive solidity. Our much bigger problem is that we've consistently been diabolical offensively. We've scored 47 league goals. Most teams in the top eight places have scored in the 60s or 70s.

We've had 16 draws - joint highest in the division. Most of those have been games we could/should have won, not where we were hanging on to avoid defeat. We've consistently failed to convert pressure into goals. Our biggest problem has been a posse of non-scoring strikers and attacking midfielders.

Of course we need to upgrade the defence, but recruiting some attackers who can hit the back of the net is our overwhelming priority.

I can't help thinking Mark Hughes will have his own ideas, and none of the "usual suspects" will be coming to VP in the summer.

It's that time of year where we throw a few pieces of jig-saw onto the ground and hope some knit together.
    Of which they invariably don't
Hopefully a bit more acumen involved this time around, as opposed to grabbing a few out of contract unmotivated players from similar clubs, to be unmotivated here.

And we wonder why Bradford fans are permanently annoyed if their expectations are set at the level of signing those players.

I agree with you. I put the defensive improvements under Hughes (and stats back that up - we've let in 9 goals during his 10 games vs. 45 in the 34 games prior) down to the style of play change. We've gone from 1/3 possession to 2/3 possession. If the opposition have the ball less it makes sense that our defenders will have to defend less.

The reason we will not get promoted unless we change personnel. Our three main goal threats, Cook, Angol and Vernam have all been guilty of missing way too many guilt edged chances. Neither Cook or Angol will score you enough goals to get you promoted. That puts pressure on a midfield with a lack of goal threat but the goal threat should come primarily from your strikers.

spot on. Chats like this are utter pointless.

We need players that suit Hughes style of play, characters, winners, players that can hold their nerve, hungry and ambitious.

Pointless fans picking names out of a hat.
