Our season has been defined so far by our lack of ability to convert goal scoring opportunities into goals. The xG analytics reinforces what we've all seen with our own eyes. We started with an encouraging partnership in Angol and Cook but with no back up. Why we didn't recruit another striker to reinforce the strikeforce defeats me as I've said previously. Once Angol was injured and the window was about to close, we were looking at the leftovers. No offence to Robinson and Lavery but they are not the players to spearhead a promotion push.

We're still 6 games away from bringing somebody new in and the January window is more of a sellers market than a buyers. Expecting to be able to recruit better strikers in January than Robinson or Lavery will be difficult.

It won’t be easy, agreed. I can see us trying the loan market. It doesn’t require big investment from Rupp and we’ll likely be able to pay only a fraction of the players wages. As we all know, loans can be a lottery. Cook was a great loan last year but we may well end up with another Austin Samuels. Eek

The trouble is that by January, the ‘fat lady could well be singing from the deck of that well known liner, the good ship ‘League Two’, as it sails off from Valley Parade.
The next three games, against Colchester, Sutton and Carlisle are against very beatable teams. The two after that are tougher prospects. To retain any vague chance of getting back into the Play Off mix we need 11 points!
Members of BT keep talking about the transfer window in January, as if it is some sort of panacea for all our ills. Quite frankly the season could be ‘done’ before then.
Which quality striker(s) is going to genuinely want to come to a club, with a history of few win bonuses and virtually zilch chance of a promotion bonus?
In some ways better to keep the funds and invest in the following season.

Adams keeps saying that league tables mean nothing at this stage of season. I strongly disagree, we could be 10 points or over adrift by Christmas and it would take a massive turn of fortunes to overcome that

that’s because transfers are not allowed before January, obviously, and it’s the first chance to bring in fresh faces.

I think the arrival of Cook last season shows there are players that have slipped down the pecking order elsewhere that could improve us, even if we can’t pray on a Charlie Wyke type anymore with the lure of a higher division.

In the meantime Adams has to coax extra out of the players we have and try get the conversion rate up

I did say ‘by January’, l am acutely aware of the timetable. My post suggested it could all well be over by then and who is actually wanting to ‘come in’ to a club where the season is effectively finished.

The problem with that approach is that if we carry on averaging one point per game, as we are at present, we'll more likely find ourselves in a relegation scrap than pushing for a playoff place.
We have a terrible injury record, a blunt strikeforce and a defence that can't keep clean sheets. We can't assume that we'll remain in safe mid table if we carry on as we are. We need reinforcements.

Lets face it: the owner isn't interested and is not going to give us a massive war chest. What I see realistically happening in January, is that we get a few last minute loans in from clubs above us, once they've sorted out their own transfer incomings.

Can't just have 1 decent pairing.
Got to have a few to cover injuries.
That would be my mindset if i was manager.
Unfortunately i don't get well paid to or am remotely qualified to make these decisions unlike the professional football people we have running the club.

If we don't get at least ten points from those three games, then I've had it with Adams.

Not completely true. It depends on the club you are loaning from and what benefit you can offer the club loaning from as at times the loaning club will be happy to pick up all the cost if it thinks there is a long term benefit. Although it is becoming more common that even loans with the parent club picking up the bill to be conditional so its only free if they play a certain number of games and I guess in those cases clubs have to take a worst-case view so have to budget for paying the full amount

Good point. And it emphasizes the need for us to forge good relationships with bigger, local clubs, and establish a credible reputation for being a good development route for loan players.

I looked at the next 5 games and they're all really winnable the problem is we've just played a winnable game and didn't win lol

I think we might win two of the next five though I'm being positive

Looking at who Bolton signed on loan, they brought in quite a few senior players, so I imagine their wages were subsidised.

Not sure about the West Ham lad or the Burnley keeper, but they were smart to bring in a range of ages and experience levels.

I think if we went totally cheap, we'd end up signing three or four unproven 18-20 year olds and I'm note sure that's what we need or Adams wants.

I think if we do sign loan players, Adams might limit himself to the more experienced and expensive end of the market, but I could be totally wrong. Just going on what he's said previously and his actions with regards young players who aren't quite ready.

Even the reintroduction of Sir Bobby Campbell in 83/84 could not force into what would have been the play offs in today's environment, despite was it winning 10 on the bounce.

January in my head, has to be about developing the squad ready for next season, both in terms of incomings and outgoings. The second half of the season has to be more of a platform for next season, showing more leadership, character and synergy.

We can't be leaving it all for the summer again hoping that it clicks instantaneously, as inevitably, they will be some high and lows with any signings.

100 % agreed at this stage, if we sign 4 or 5 only 2 or 3 will be any good, that's just how it works.

Another 4 or 5 in the Summer, same ratio, and next season without too many departures and a bit of stability we might have a shot at it...
