that’s what I mean it’s every game now you have something like this ........ any ball at head height hitting that six yard box he should be coming to claim ....... sometimes he does some times he doesn’t which must be a nightmare for our centre backs

Watching the highlights, at least he made a decent save when their player was one on one. Apart from that, it looked very much like a case of uncommanding goalkeeping - palming shots away instead of holding onto the ball, and not coming out for crosses including the one that cost us the match.

Problem is though, if he's first choice, how bad must Hornby be in DA's eyes? From what I've seen of him, he looks a bit erratic, but has the potential to do a job if he just got a run of games. It's the same old scenario of DA being stubborn and starting the same players. But of course, it's not his problem if they don't perform.

Same as when Ben Williams broke the clean sheet record.

He was only a very average goalkeeper but looked great on paper thanks to a solid team shape and a strong back 4.

To be honest if any club shows interest in any of our players and we are prepared to let them go, they would be daft not to move. Come summer they could be out of contract with no takers due to the volume of out of contract players there will be

Hornby's contract doesn't expire until summer 2023 as he signed a 2 year deal last summer. I thought at the time that it signalled l he was going to be Adams number 1, but then he ended up bench warming until last week.

1 goal on Saturday came from a defender being indecisive (lucky not to concede due to a similar incident before it) and the other came from Hornby dropping the ball.

Give over. As a goalie he should have another 5 or 6 years left in him. Assuming he learns how to catch again. Its not age against him, it's confidence

nah. most keepers still good enough at 36. The best can go on a couple of years beyond that - Schmeical, Bonetti, Seaman and many others

What about that other er generously proportioned keeper, John Burridge. Wasn’t he older than HRH when he stopped playing?

edit: just had a quick look, my memory is fading, I seem to remember him as fairly hefty build but it seems he wasn’t. Still a helluva character though.

Dino Zoff. Duke was 38 when he left us. Shilton was still playing at 40.

I couldn't believe it at the time. I had just landed in Campbell's Bar when someone said to me "you will never guess who is in goal today".

So, both keepers were making mistakes and no one thought to look at the defence and midfield as a unit rather than just conveniently criticise the two exposed individuals?

A keeper at this level is generally only as good as the protection in front of him. If that's poor, there's not a keeper in the bottom two league's that will be consistently mistake free.

Agreed and believing DA can squeeze more out of the squad is why I'm optimistic about the coming season. It's starting to feel like we've got a very capable man steering the ship and someone who is proven at navigating the waters.

Yep, there's no bullshit here, he knows what he's doing. And if he comes up short, he'll be the first to admit it. Like you, haven't felt so confident at the start of a season for a good long while. All digits crossed, mate!

Not currently sure about the goalie coach, Kev. But re the rest of your thoughts, there are a good number of posters on here whose thoughts I respect because they clearly do think about and think through their football. But in the end you're absolutely right, it's Derek Adams who sees ROD and Sam every day in training and through the friendlies. He'll know a hundred times more than any of us - and he's got a good record with decent goalies.
