Restaurants and stuff

Went on a birthday do last year. Did the job.

Finally got the OK through for a visit to Grand Cru in Birkenshaw. Terrible name.

Greene King, is that good or bad news? Some have said it'll be a sports bar but surely those days have gone? I go past regularly and there seem to be 2 guys doing the fit out, they've been there as long as most companies take to fit out 20 pubs!

 

Madness to me that Halifax has taken over Bradford for eateries/boozers. Shows how much of a dive Bradford is, unfortunately.

 

Dunno, might have done, went in as many as poss! I've not got to grips with names & good & bad places yet.

I've been a few times this year and can see us going more, tbh, Leeds is costing us too much, £100 doesn't last an afternoon, in Halifax money, that's £30/40. It's been pretty busy every time I've been only negative is two trains and having to walk across Bradford.

Edit:- Just looked at Alibis, not been, looks Leeds so MrsAbbo will like it. Will try next month, am enjoying food & drink in Valencia till then.

 

Another sign of the times I'm afraid. In years gone by when would anyone pass through Bradford to get to Halifax?

 

In my youth Halifax was a little town compared to the nightlife offered in Bradford. When Town used to play on Friday nights, a lot of City fans used to go the Shay, then on the piss. Halifax is as it was IMO, with a handful of upgrades, Bradford has hurtled backwards and absolutely lost it's soul.

Town should go back to Friday nights!

 

I used to go to the speedway at the Shay many years ago. Pretty sure Halifax didn't have a Cloud Nine back then

 

I thought Bradford was showing shoots of a small recovery in terms of the night life, in particular Ivegate?

 

I think Halifax has better places to pull people in from, if you're on the outskirts of Bradford in any direction you have better options. From the shipley side you can go to Leeds or Ilkley on the train or have a drink in Saltaire, i live in Queensbury and its a lot better going to Halifax. Bradford has been dying as a city for years, whether its through the night or day its like a zombie apocalypse. Horrible soulless place now.

 

I was brought up in Shipley but Bradford just never appealed to me, but neither does Leeds etc etc. I'd always choose to experience the delights of Shipley then through Saltaire, made for a great run.

 

Saltaire is a decent run for some scran and a few drinks, Hebden Bridge is similar. Feel sorry for Bradford in a way, it has no identity. When i was a student there were a few options for a night out dependant on your taste. You could have a great night around the university and at Rios or the night clubs on the other side of the city centre. Ice cream parlours and burger joints seem the order of the day if thats what floats your boat.

 

Can anyone suggest a good place in the Bingley/Saltaire/Shipley area to take my folks? It is for an 80th so I want it to be decent.

They are more Steak and Ale pie/Beer battered fish than lamb six ways with cauliflower foam and cavelo nero crisps.

Not eaten out in that area for years, apart from a curry, so I've no idea what is decent.

 

The Hop/Tramshed is Salt Bar & Kitchen now. Decent level of pub-type food, but quite a
loud/echo-y place although I did spot a side-room that might be a bit quieter.

I think they're doing good stuff at the Waterside in Shipley too.

 

Halifax - both the Victorian Beer Cafe* & Grayston Unity** are opening/have opened second places.

If you start to drink and eat in Potting Shed, Alibi, Fire Pit etc your £30/40 will double and be close to Leeds prices.

Never had a night out in Halifax but I think I might have to pop over one weekend. Looks like there's a place called Craft that looks good too.

Halifax better than Bradford for a night out is something I never thought I'd hear!!
