Been going to Kiplings for years now and always enjoyed their curries.

Staff and service has always been very good.

I used to think that Italian was the height of posh. Can't remember the name of it. The first time I ever spent over a hundred quid on a meal was in there once when I was treating the family. Thinking back there were about 7 or 8 of us eating so that was fck all really.

This was one of the biggest shocks to my system when I moved to Bradford from Essex in 1980. All the chippys down south stayed open until at least 11pm (in the days when pubs closed at 10.30 on weeknights) and usually midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, when the pubs called time at 11. And most were open all afternoon from about midday. A bag of chips on the way home from the pub was great.
But all the chippys in Bradford shut well before pub closing time. And lots opened over lunch, then shut, then opened from 4-7 only. Unbelievable!

Wife and I went to Matt Healey X The Foundry (what's that name about?) for her birthday yesterday.
Nice decor and atmosphere and very good, friendly service. Stonkingly good full bodied malbec (albeit £40 a bottle). So far, so good.
    The food? Not so much.
It's all small plates, brought out in random order as & when they prepare it. Now I've no objection to this idea and I enjoy a good selection of tapas. But for what they were charging - mostly £8/9 per dish - the portions were tiny. We were advised to order six dishes between us; I could easily have eaten all six myself. One consisted of three small sprigs of cauliflower with some herbs and spices sprinkled on.
We'd ordered salted almond nibbles - which were excellent and plentiful, plus the sourdough bread with various spreads and dips. Thank goodness we did, because they were really nice and meant I didn't leave still feeling hungry.
All the food was nice enough, without being stunning, but overpriced and undersized. Thankfully we had a £50 voucher as a Christmas present so we weren't too bothered about the bill. But I'm in no hurry to go back. A triumph of style over substance, I'm afraid.

Funnily enough I'd been reading, earlier in the day, about a Lancashire food producer called the Nowt Poncy Food Co, which was formed as a reaction to Nouvelle Cuisine. This felt exactly the sort of offering that they were reacting to.

Last meal on death row? it'd have to be a full English, none of your foreign muck. White bread and tea with two sugars. If i'm gonna fry in that chair i might as well go type two diabetic and enjoy the experience.

I wouldn’t say it’s even affected badly . Waiter told us there had 200 covers between 1-5 Saturday dinner . We was sat down stairs near the door and watched maybe 50 people get turned away whilst we was there . The food was spot on really enjoyed it . The service wasn’t the best but I’d go back for a second visit .
@millario@millario manchester was not as busy as you come to expect for a Saturday afternoon but the bars were all doing a roaring trade . Had lunch and then headed too Spinning fields which was busy and then headed to dukes 92 which I think is one of my favourite bars in the evening sun . Finished with a Chinese in China town . Top weekend and for £30 in the premier inn Carnt moan

Birthday treat yesterday. Five course tasting menu, plus wine pairing, at the Waterside, Shipley:

Pea, mint & asparagus gazpacho (amuse bouche)

    1. Rabbit terrine
    Sauvignon Blanc

    1. Garden salad (non meat option for Ms Offcomedun)
    Sauvignon Blanc

    2. Vodka & orange turbot with compressed cucumber
Kung Fu Girl Reisling (Washington state)

    3. Venison
    Dandelion Shiraz Reisling (Oz)

3.Turbot with lobster bisque sauce (non meat option)
    Beaujolais Village

    4. Strawberry & passion fruit Sorbet

    5. Triple Chocolate vegan brownie
    Sauternes

It was all really good, but particular mention to the Reisling/cured, uncooked turbot pairing and the beautifully cooked venison loin.

£40 for the food. £25 for the wine pairing. Bloody good value in my book.

Reasonable portions too, unlike the Yorke Arms at Ramsgill, which charges £110 for several thimbles full of poncy nonsense.
