Writing off the money and a cracking game against Chelsea were his major contributions.

Hysterically overrated now, though, as it's all a bit rose tinted. Two special moments every season, that's how Wednesday fans remember him, and something like 8 goals for a centre forward we paired with a guy who scored even less I'm Ashley Ward.

As with all mercurial, enigmatic talent he is considered utterly wonderful, and people pretend he was way above where we were in the Premier League - but he had a couple more chances at Derby and Boro and did nothing.

A very good player, particularly technically, who was not consistent or dangerous and nothing like one of the best PL players at the time.

He was a taste of Premier League cosmopolitanism, though, and we've had nothing like it since.

Lee. Can also add Claridge onto that list. What about Danny Cadamateri. Also came with a reputation.

Not only from the footballing side but most (I wont say all) of all the feel good factor, that we has as fans we knew exactly where we stood both on the field and off it.
Many have criticised our last owners but they were as open as they could be telling us we would carry a deficit and if we couldnt cover it with a cup run we would have to sell , we all thought at the time Rack & Ruin were the guys to take us to the next level even saying so themselves.
IMO only one word for their purchase of our club "disaster" yes hindsight is a wonderful thing :(.

I don’t class him as a legend, but to even mention the relegations lays some blame at his door and look at the teams he played in, in another team he just wouldn’t have got them. This is a worst player thread, I’d be surprised if anyone baring yourself who watched him all those years would put him in the list you have, each to their own I guess. He was worth plenty for his goal against Liverpool alone.

This is pound for pound signings. You’re getting it confused with something else. Was he 1.5 million? A main stay of a side that survived against all odds in the premier league. His header alone in the game against Liverpool must have been worth 20 million bakc then.
So tell me, who was he one of the worst pound for pound signings? Baffling.

He was a bad appointment, but Todd should never have been sacked. Simply he thought he was helping. No different to Shearer when he took the job at Newcastle and they got relegated. If a manager is hired who is out of their depth the one doing the hiring has to be held accountable, as you say Julian.

Really? Every team signs duds. But only those who consistently sign more garbage than quality are those who continue to regress. I think you'd have to go some, to find a club whose recruitment performance has been as bad as ours- consistently, over a similar period.

We're a poorly run club, top down. And have been for a long while.

33 years ago we signed paul tomlinson for £47k. I bet we've we have signed a only handful of players for more than that in the last 10 years.

We now have become a landing pit for players that nobody wants. Thats whats needed to change, we need to take players off clubs not drag them from the shitpool.

Since it’s going on pound for pound he’s the winner with no competition, paying a mil for a player back then was a big deal unless it was a big club.

    Not David Hopkin?

I'm interested in some of the more unlikely flops. I hadn't realised quite how pathetic Devitt's season was until I really started thinking about the actual facts!

Paul McLaren - signed from Tranmere - league above. He had topped the L1 assist table the season prior, so it was a bit of a coup for us in L2. We played Burnley in pre-season and one of their players hacked him down on at least 3 occasions - Paulinho was taking the piss out of the Burnley midfield. It was a friendly, but the referee had a word with their gaffer, Owen Coyle, who in so many words told him to take their reckless player off, otherwise, the next time he would see red - in a friendly, remember. The inevitable happened, Coyle had no choice and subbed their midfielder (Wade Elliot?) 25 minutes in after a thorough bumming by a player who shared their surname with a car manufacturer.

Anyhow, I digress, McLaren turned out to be a bloody crab - not once did he make a forward pass; fell injured and pissed off darn sarth. :joy:

Has to be Ashley Ward the guy missed so many chances he could give Donaldson a run for his money

For me we have an almost endless list of wasters.

    1) David Hopkin - not his fault he got his injury at Darlo in the cup but even prior to that he didn’t look fit.

    2) Petrescu - looked interested when we played Chelsea and beat them. Other than that from what I heard he had a problem with absolutely everything to do with the club.

    3) Wetherall - seems to have a big fan club at City. Never understood it. A very average player who joined us in the premier league and left us as a league 2 club. How anybody who played their part on 3 relegations can be seen as a hero is totally beyond me. People also conveniently forget that he was desperate for a move to Man City at one point which only collapsed due to a failed medical. This also meant he was unlikely to pass a medical anywhere else. People seem to confuse that with him being loyal for staying. We should’ve kept Darren Moore.

    4) Ward. Not fit to pace Lee Mills boots. To think we shipped Mills out and brought in Ward still leaves me with a shudder.

    5) Rankine - word has it that we were actually offered him on loan. Richmond thought he’d be an investment so asked for a price for a permanent. He’d talked it over with Jewell. Jewell reckoned £100k top. A day later Richmond calls him tells him he’s agreed a million. Jewell thought he was joking.

    6) Akpan. Never have I seen a player think he’s Yaya Toure but actually play more like Darren Morgan. The most lightweight “big lad” I’ve ever seen.

    7) Adcock - class goal on his debut. Shite after that.

    8) Aizlewood - another played scum took the piss out of us with.
