Apart from the free kick incident ( yes, if it had been us the ref would have pulled it back until he had blown his whistle) I thought Wilson was very slow to move when any ball came across the penalty box leaving a lot of chances for a tap in..
Hadn't quite picked up on the criticism re Chicksen until last night but he was terrible , along with Henry when he came on..but there were a lot of improved performances from quite a few players, Akpan, Mellor and of course Miller whose manager was surely there to spy on their next cup opponents
All in all though the game was good value for a fiver...!!

In fairness, it's a great free kick. Quick mind and accuracy. Credit is required

I thought we were slack at the free kick.Akpan got the ball but just dropped it and Toney picked it up and let fly. That was lack of concentration and poor game management.

No issues with the free-kick, if he'd hoofed it wide and the ref had pulled it back and let them take it again because it was a yard away from the foul there'd have been loads of moaning, we should have managed the situation much better than we did.

You can’t see where Wilson is when Toney hits it, but as the ball’s near halfway I’d imagine he was near the edge of his area, which would be reasonable positioning. Toney then strikes it perfectly and it goes just under the bar.

Easy to criticise Wilson, but if I’m him I’d be going nuts at Akpan - at pro level in particular you’d gave every right to expect your team to ‘slow down’ the taking of it.

As it was, Akpan pretty much handed him the ball and then stood out of the way. I think all Wilson’s guilty of is not anticipating Toney would shoot, which given where the ball was would be a reasonable assumption!

Bear in mind better keepers than Wilson have been done from that sort of range (or longer). Courtois by Charlie Adam springs to mind, Beckham’s goal v Sullivan etc. Keepers shouldn’t get beaten from there, but it’s not as if he was stood on his line when it happened.

I saw Wilson also got some pelters on here for the 3rd goal which, having now seen it, I can’t believe. Makes a good reaction save to the flick at goal and then no one’s marking Maddison for the rebound. It was described as a ‘clanger’. How, exactly?

I’m not proclaiming Wilson as the second coming, but I do think he got targeted a bit unfairly last night for what was a great bit of quick thinking - that should either have been prevented or pulled back for wrong place/moving ball - and then a good save?

Agreed. Many better keepers than Wilson have been caught out by accurate surprise snapshots from distance. I'm sure @Interested Bystander@Interested Bystander will remember Mervyn Day going through a phase of being done off his line several times in the 70s. The main fault was Akpan's for handing the opportunity to Toney on a plate and the referee for allowing the free kick to be taken several yards forward of where the foul occurred.

I questioned at the time how Wilson was responsible for the third goal. The replay confirms he made a good save and it was slack marking of Madison at fault.

Wilson made a really good one on one save late in the game to keep us in the tie. I also thought his kicking and distribution was streets ahead of what we've seen from O'Donnell so far.

Clearly O'Donnell is the better keeper and deservedly first choice. But I though Wilson did ok and didn't deserve the knee jerk stick he got from some quarters.

World record signing at the time 65k, a week later Stoke signed Banks for 50k - Ron Greenwood knew football :)

Joe Corrigan wasn't a bad keeper but conceded a favourite of mine from the 70s - WHU 4th Ronnie Boyce

    Fantastic goal.
But what about that pitch??!! That game would never have been played today.
Reminds me of the Cup Winners Cup game against Eintracht Frankfurt in 1975/6 at Upton Park. Shocking pitch, with puddles everywhere. Keith Robson toepoked the ball out of one and then smashed it in from distance.

It might be the drink but I am sure I saw some grass on that field! Jeez, the way we complained about VP the last couple of years, it was pristine compared to that. lol

That's been our achilles heel all season. We just seem to switch off. Whether from free kicks, corners, just after scoring or leading up to our just after half time. We need leaders on the pitch to make sure we remain focused and switched on at all times.

We're just too nice at the moment.

I agree in principle with your post but you can’t blame Akpan for Toney’s goal. Wilson clearly was half asleep when Toney hit it and to be fair it was a great strike. I thought the other goals were decent assists, not a lot you could do with them.

As with @Offcomedun’s post i agree with the gist of your post but as a keeper, if you get beat from the half way line then you as the keeper as the main culprit, not some guy who has dropped the ball at the half way line, its about 50 yards away. If he dropped the ball at the edge of the penalty area i could understand it. It was a nervy debut fron Wilson, he wasn’t as bad as some made out and did show a bit more confidence as the match wore on. Good distribution but it was one of those games where both teams set ups allowed for more passing and less long kicking.

Said we should have gone for him in the summer. Was told he was over rated.

Good for this level. Maybe not championship but he gets goals

I can’t disagree generally about a keeper being beaten from there as it’s certainly unusual, though I’d argue it’s the element of surprise that has done for him (which is why it worked) rather than really poor positioning/technique or similar (assuming Wilson wasn’t out of his area at the time - wasn’t there so can’t say for definite).

Toney could try that another 50 times and he wouldn’t get it as accurate as he did on Tuesday. Equally, as I said before, another reason Wilson might not have immediately spotted what was happening would be because he’d expect his team to stop anything like that. Yep, black mark perhaps for not being fully switched on. Instead, Akpan neatly sets it up for Toney to have a go and then graciously gets out of the way to boot.

Whilst obviously not same level but to sort of prove the point about it being the element of surprise, I played to a decent amateur level in goal for 20+ years and this happened to me, once (and once only!).

I was always wary of positioning, watching whether strikers were taking a regular look at where I was standing during play etc just in case they decided to try something long range.

However, in one game the play was around halfway, opposition got a free kick and I was stood on the edge of my area. Similar to Tuesday, ball was put down and one of their players stood nearby just took an immediate short run at it and hit it, even though I realised what was happening just as he was striking it, that was too late as he caught it perfectly.

I suppose if nothing else it might make Wilson more wary of this happening ever again (it certainly was the case for me!).

Aye he isn’t the first keeper to get beat like that and won’t be the last, if anything we are detracting away from what was a superb piece of opportunism from Toney,an inch perfect strike. Having watched it back i think the ref was right to let it stand.

Maybe the fact we have no goalkeeping coach doesn't help as these are the kind of tactics experienced ex keeps should know about.

For me,if a player can score from half way,and a few have done, then a keeper shouldn't be any further out than penalty spot.To be on the edge of the area in such circumstances is bravado and can be embarrassing,it set the tone for the game, gave Peterborough confidence and built a wall we had to overcome.
