I see the leader being someone to step away from the current lot. I would be surprised if anyone who has served in Cabinet with Boris ends up being PM in the near future.

So a current minister or below. Boris and his allies will ensure Sunak does not rise to PM, expect a smear campaign should he make the last two.

Looks like the field has narrowed down and it's getting vaguely interesting.

It seems to be turning into an auction of who can cut tax fastest which I ideologically love but there's a bit of me worried it's not the right time.

Would love Mordaunt, Zawahi or Javid to get it. I like Tugendhat as a politician but his the start of his campaign has been a bit of a damp squib.

I'd never heard of Kemi Badenoch before but liked everything she was saying, with a bit more air time she could end up being a surprise contender I think.

Which one is campaigning as an even further right version of Johnson? (I ask that because over here we are in an election season - not for president- and all the Republicans are trying to claim undying love for Trump and trying to appear even further to the right. Seemingly it appeals to the base.)

It appears there are two - Penny Mordaunt and Suella Braverman. Both are expected to be endorsed by various members of the ERG (the extreme right of the Conservative party) and who make Boris appear as some kind of wet pinko liberal! Braverman herself is a member of the Spartan group who themselves are an extreme faction within the ERG! A scary thought for most.

Rees Mogg and Dorries have backed Truss, so that seems to be the anyone but Sunak club from the Johnson loyalists.

There appears to be about 5 people that are being backed in decent numbers. As suggested above those who back Braverman will fall behind Morduant or vice versa once the other is eliminated and could see one of those in the final 2.

Most of them are to the right of Johnson, tbh, with the possible exceptions of Hunt and Tugendhat, who won't win because they'll be seen as too wet by the ageing home counties rump that now constitutes Tory Party membership.
All the sensible, experienced Tory big hitters were purged by Johnson after the last election, when he filled his cabinet full of third rate sycophantic nobodies, believing they'd keep him in power however incompetent a Prime Minister he turned out to be. Wrong.
Liz Truss is an ultra Thatcherite. Sunak and Javid are both 'small state' Thatcherites. Kemi Badenoch is another far right culture warrior like Braverman as is Patel, if she stands.
The Tories are well on course to double down on their identity as the Nasty Party, and then some.

Judged on policies rather than ideology it's probably not that difficult to be to the right of Johnson. He's probably the most left wing "tax and spend" PM we've had in a generation - out of necessity of course.

Kemi Badenoch, is probably about as bravely right as you can realistically be in the UK.

The little snippets in the interview earlier about "governments doing less but doing it better" was music to my ears but I can't for the life of me believe that either the UK or the Conservative party are willing to face the backlash from the media of going down that route.

Think it will be Truss, which I wouldn't mind.

My top 3 personal choice would be

    1. Penny Mordaunt
    2. Tom Tugendhat
    3. Liz Truss

None of the above I wish, all useless, at least Patel has backed out thankfully, she epitomises all that's weak in the Tory party...

For me it's any, if there are any, who have strong connections to the North of England. I'm not clued up enough to know whether any of the 'final eight' are northern, or have northern roots, but those are the one's I'd personally like to see succeed as that would give us the best chance of feeling some benefit.

Conservative Britain has been all for London and for far too long.

I reckon it'll come down to Rishi and Truss/Tugendhat.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Tugendhat gets it in the end.

Rishi Sunak is the MP for Richmond although that can be classed as the North its a far different proposition to the likes of Bradford, Shipley, Bury Oldham etc
