Sunak would be a nightmare. Hes not the person to see the general public through the cost of living. Talk about Maggie kind of leadership isn't something(even though I wasn't born) that I would want.

For the Blues to stand any chance in the next General Election they do need someone that understands and will put the public first not worry about paying thing or how to pay things back in this current cost of living crisis.

Someone that will take action and help out people is what is required. Not a someone who has a Billionaire wife.

Sunak didn't help out with the petrol prices. He increased tax.

For the public he would be a nightmare.

Yes, its all about help out and he won't. A Maggie in waiting.

    Rishi is a RAT!!

Seriously, as much as I disliked Boris. We don't need him as our PM. It would be a nightmare for the country.

I agree with most of your post, the only thing I would disagree with is your comment with regards the Tories having any chance at the next election, they have a 80+ majority that won't be easy for Labour to overturn, but your right they have to address the present situation with regards the cost of living crisis, unfortunatly there is no money tree and whatever is done now to help address the situation it has to be payed back at sometime in the future.

Sunak is up there with Truss as my least favourite to get the job but didn't he reduce fuel duty?

Of the 8 left, by the end of today I expect to only see 4 possibly 5 left.

    Prediction

    Kemi Badenoch - Eliminated tonight
    Suella Braverman - Eliminated tonight
    Jeremy Hunt - Eliminated tonight
Penny Mordaunt - Through to next ballot
Rishi Sunak - Through to next ballot
Liz Truss - Through to next ballot
Tom Tugendhat - Through to next ballot
    Nadhim Zahawi - Eliminated tonight

However there could be deals beind the scenes which see Kemi and Suella from the same wing of the party unite to back the other pushing one of the two through. Jeremy Hunts support will likely go to Tom Tugendhat and Nadhim Zahawi's support going to Liz Truss as the status quo candidate.

However if Sunak's support is so strong they could tactically vote a weaker candidate through to eliminate a potential threat down the line.

It's clear at this stage, Boris and Co do not want Sunak to take over so expect some stories to come out in the coming days from the Mail etc.

Yes he did reduce the fuel duty twice by 5p and then another 5p but had no control on the petrol companies passing it on to the consumer so it had no effect.

What he failed to do or didn’t want to us reduce the VAT on fuel by 5% which would have automatically reduced fuel prices for all.

Nothing automatically reduce fuel prices does it? The companies can charge what they like. Why would a 5% reduction in VAT have decreased prices any more than a 10p cut in the fuel duty?

VAT is a tax which the customer pays. So reducing the tax will in turn reduce the cost automatically for the customer.

A duty effects the business. So to counter act that you increase the cost for the customer.

All tax is paid by the customer eventually.

But if the petrol costs £2 quid a litre before hand the garage can still charge £2 quid a litre after the tax cut regardless of whether the cut is in the duty or the VAT. The garage still set the price regardless of how much is passed on.

Anyway, derailing the thread but that's a weird view of taxation if you believe that they are obloigated to pass any reductions in tax onto the consumer even if they morally should.

And then there were 6. Hunt and Zahawi illuminated today.

Sunak and Mordaunt polled the most.

I can see Mordaunt quietly building up some momentum as the days go by. Definitely my choice for leader

Not quite, she has 'woke' baggage which would come back to haunt her, I'm hoping for Badenoch although she has no cabinet experience, might have to settle for Truss....

Penny M's opening gambit was asking about politicians' inspiration and motivation to move into politics. Hers was, as a 9 year-old, standing on Portsmouth harbour, watching the UK taskforce setting sail for the Falklands and concluding that Britain will not be bullied.

So , Britain is against the world, not part of the world.

That underlines her "Britain first" stance, that so pizzed off most of the world against Trump with his MAGA nonsense.

Pity that Jeremy Hunt couldn't raise enough support.

None of the remaining 6 would get my support, especially if endorsed by Jacob R-M. His sole measure of suitability seems to be their Brexitness.

Have the Sun readers given you any Brexit benefit ideas yet Jacob?

What's wrong with putting your own country first?. I would welcome that all day long.
