He's probably going to give Lavery a chance as well. I'm fine with that, he seemed to be OK when he was used fleetingly and has played at a higher level so I would hope he'll have something to bring.
Tbh, surely all of our strikers are busting a gut to play and win a contact for next season to play under Hughes? Imagine how prestigious it is for a lower league striker to play under someone like Mark Hughes.

Live down south and funnily enough not committed enough this season to hack the 4hr train journey.
I’ll put the commentary on up until we concede the first goal as usual.vladimir and JonButterfield like this. -

I'm back in the UK for the first time in 2 years so I do plan to go to this game though not with the same enthusiasm and excitement as I usually have on these return visits to VP. The only thing that will stop me going is if Ev*ns is appointed.

We knew we would get negative, defensive-first football. We knew that. We knew we would get one up top, we knew it. Sparks personally must have known he had no interest in youth players, and he probably made that decision when he made promotion the absolute priority over everything else.
Sparks decided to hire him knowing all that, and sacrificed his (and the club's) principles in doing so. It had to work. So what did we sack him in February for? We've literally rewritten the club's principles and identity for this guy, but he's sacked when we're 12th because the team got booed three times? Eh?
There were plenty of people surprised when Adams went, and conspiracy theories popped up straight away that, oh well, he must have wanted to be sacked. Convenient, but no. Not buying that.
As for recruitment, what a mess - Turnbull is here, the new Head of Recruitment, then he's gone - Adams is openly furious about the level of recruitment when bringing in players like Robinson, but don't worry, we'll solve that problem. Then comes January, and we've not solved that problem at all. We bring in a bunch of loans, and Hendrie.
Should Sparks give a quota of the number of veteran players? Well, why not? Would that be classed as interfering? Of course it would. But that's what a Director of Football would be doing. Asking questions, why are we bringing this player in, what does this do for the club going forward? Why are we selling Canavan, how does that stand us in good stead, I don't care that you've fallen out with him, this is about the club not you, Derek.
The club don't think we need a DoF, evidently, so that means that responsibility lies with Ryan. So let's see it. Let's see him take the lead on recruitment, let's see him planning for the next manager long before he sacks the current one, OR, let's see him stick with the personnel we've got.
But I'll ask the question again: what is he bringing to the club to augment the manager (whoever it is) from a footballing standpoint? If the answer is nothing, or very little, then that's why I'd argue we need a DoF - because Sparks simply can't, and doesn't, fulfil such a vital role.Rogered Tart and bantamdave41 like this. -

The trick with great players who manage at low levels, is fully understanding the technical limitations of the players they have. Sparky can step up an leather one like that in training, despite being nearly 60. None of his strikers can do that. Some of them can barely control a football.Stop hovering to collapse... I have had a quick look at the top three clubs in the division.
Forest Green Rovers have Richard Hughes in the role of Football Director. Here is a link to his CV https://uk.linkedin.com/in/rich-hughes-797b8652
Tranmere have a very hands on owner in Mark Palios. He has a degree in Psychology from Manchester University, is a qualified accountant and a former footballer. So no DOF at Tranmere but an owner who is totally committed to the club. When he took over Tranmere in 2014, they were in the Football League. They were relegated in 2015 and it took them 3 seasons to return (just think of the melt down that would have occurred if that happened at City).
There is no suggestion that Northampton Town have a DOF https://www.ntfc.co.uk/club/contacts/
So three very different approaches.
You could argue that Sparks has had a very tough baptism of fire in his role. My expectation is that he is learning continuously and is an adaptable individual, who is pragmatic rather than dogmatic, with fixed views.
The points you make about the club putting in place some framework on who is signed as players is valid. Is there some criteria? Perhaps write to Ryan about it, or raise the issue directly at a Fans Forum?
Appointing a DOF is no guarantee of success.
Forest Green Rovers are very dependent on Dale Vince ‘enabling’ them with his financial muscle. They are in reality a ‘large village’ club, with a very small support, with a very strong ethos, dictated by Vince, some could say cloying, which I would guess would alienate the vast majority of City fans if a similar individual were to take over at VP.Bantam75 and Park bantam like this. -
Il give Liverpool as an example. In defence, you will commonly see a 4-3-3. With the wingers dropping deep to assist the full backs an perhaps Firmino dropping deeper into midfield to fill any voids. almost a 4-5-1 or a 5-3-2 depending on the strength of the opposition an how far back Fabinho choses to play
In attack however, You see the transition. The full backs go up, The CDM, notably Fabino, will either drop slightly deeper an act almost as part of a back 3, whilst the wingers invert themselves closer towards the goal. You see there, a 4-3-3 has gone into more of a 3-4-1-2
Now thats just an example for arguments sake. One thing i've noticed about this team under adams was they were too rigid. Somewhat compact in defensive situations, we’d go into a 4-5-1, or from when Canavan was here an Songo was in the middle, a 5-4-1. When we broke on the attack however, we would often be a shambles. A bunch of headless chickens so to speak. In other words, we couldn’t counter or looked pretty shit whilst doing it.
This kind of implementation will take time, I can see us being more organised under Hughes than before, But I don’t see wholesale changes being made till at least next season
bare in mind, It took Pep 2 years to get City playing his way, Whilst with Klopp it took about 3 to get liverpool playing the way he wanted to
