A very positive write up @Bigrod !
The issue with Sparks hasn't been the support he's given his managers - he's tried his best. He supported Stuart when he was weakest, although the contract extension had no effect, I suppose it's still a 'vote of confidence' so to speak. He gave Trueman and Sellars a very fair crack of the whip, although their success was relatively short-lived. He supported Adams and let him bring changes. He's undoubtedly going to do what he can to support Hughes, too, I don't think there's much question about that.
The criticisms are all around Sparks' decisions, which point to a lack of expertise and experience (the latter of which is beyond doubt).
The end of Stuart's reign was confused, and the start of several 'interesting' contractual decisions - giving T&S 18 months, but ending their reign within 3 months total - hunting down Adams and giving him three years, but ending his reign within 7 months - giving James Vaughan a 3 year deal as club captain, but then sending him off on loan - replacing managers, like clockwork, every February or a few weeks after a transfer window has closed, the worst POSSIBLE time.
All of this is avoidable, although some will argue the circumstances each time pressed Sparks into action. It's his job to be stronger than that, though, and not to bow to the first sign of pressure, or to help people work through that pressure, so that our timelines are better suited to our search for success, not detrimental to it every single time.
Knowing what we want to do, also, is Sparks' job.
Talking about the importance of academy prospects, then hiring Adams makes no sense.
Following McCall/T&S with Adams from a tactical stand point makes no sense.
Endlessly hiring aging players (and most recently, an aging manager?) on reputation alone makes no sense.
Letting players like Canavan go because they've fallen out with Adams, then sacking Adams weeks later, leaving us with no defence and a pissed off squad (according to Wetherby Whaler) makes no sense.
Indeed all of Ryan Sparks' decisions have looked either reactionary, or downright cynical.
Appointing Adams and declaring this a promotion season has turned out to be an utter disaster.
Good for tickets, sound commercially in the short term, but otherwise terrible.
Some have remarked already that the hiring of an out-of-work Mark Hughes who has never managed at anything like this level seems like another solid marketing move, but we'll see how that plays out.
Ryan has done nothing to stop the revolving door policy of hiring and firing managers AND players. He talks about stability, but nowhere in the club is there the first sign of any stability. He talks about a lot of things, matter of fact, but without ever implementing any of it. He talks now of backing Hughes with anything he needs to succeed, and you know what, that's POTENTIALLY believable, especially as Hughes says he spoke to Rupp directly before taking the job.
But in what way can Sparks possibly assist Hughes beyond saying 'yes' to his requests, much like he did with Adams, none of which were worthwhile?
What does Ryan Sparks actually BRING to the table, from a footballing perspective, rather than a commercial one?
Time to show us. That time is now.

We are just about as far from Liverpool and Man City as we are from the moon. We need to compare ourselves with Forest Green, Swindon, Tranmere, Accrington et al to get an accurate picture of how we need to proceed. We need grit, determination, organisation and players who stay fit to fight in this league.Bronco, Mason Handshake, bantamdave41 and 3 others like this. -

woke up this morning with a real spring in my step and really looking forward to the match.
The sun is shining and it really does feel like a new start, we are coming out of a long dark damp winter of Adams ball.
I am not expecting miracles, just the small shoots of recovery. A win would be fantastic , a draw not bad .

At least Hughes will today be seeing how little talent there is at the club, hope he starts planning immediately on clearing the decks and building for the future. He will also be seeing first hand how shambolic our recruitment has been.
Wonder if he will look at out of contract players if there's anyone out there he likes, we still have to find a couple of wins and this shower look incapable.
Lets face it, what is happening today is not a surprise to anyone so not going to lose any renewed optimism - be very interesting to hear how MH handles this in after match interviewOllylondonbantam, Ponty City, vladimir and 3 others like this. -
One team on a great run and one on a very poor one and the match stats showed very little between them.
Mansfield had more belief and harried our players all game.
Ridealgh, Walker, Vernham, Angol , in that team make a big difference for me.
Robinson , Daly, should both be sent back if you can , both offered nothing, Lavery and Evans did more in their brief stints. Faulds had a nightmare and Songo is no centre half.
We lacked any cohesion up front and once again individual defensive mistakes were punished.
They are league 2 footballers and will make mistakes , but everytime we do it we concede and that is a good starting point for Mr Hughes to work on this week.vladimir, AberBantam, Inspector and 3 others like this. -
I still hope Paudie will be with us next season, alongside an experienced centre back who is a good talker and with a bit of pace. We shouldn't write all the existing players off and POC is still a relatively young lad

Who would you have appointed and crucially why?
In respect of hiring players, as I said, then apart from perhaps the Hendrie signing, then I strongly suspect the players have been identified by the Head of Recruitment (Turnbull), the Scouts, and Adams.
Should Ryan have a policy of not signing players over the age of 30, or at the very least a quota? Could he then be accused of meddling in team affairs?
My view is that reasonable attempts have been made to get Managers and footballers into place to make progress. They are the ones that have failed.Botswana Bantam, Onside, Two Legs and 2 others like this. -

Match Day. I haven’t felt this excited for a very long time. I haven’t been since the Northampton game November last year. I have been watching on iFollow Going today though. Looks like the Yorkshire weather as come out to greet our new manager.
I just want to see us put in a good performance, it would be great if we could nab all 3. Mansfield are flying so we will see.Keefly Bantam, Rocket, Bantam75 and 2 others like this. -

I'll be coming up with the 2100 Stags fans and sitting in the stand on the side. Our fans have been loud and travelled in good numbers so I'm really looking forward to losing my voice no matter the result.
I think the game will be tighter than a lot of you are expecting. We have injuries and suspensions and they way we ballsed up our last game was an absolute shambles - I've not seen anything like it in 32 years watching the Stags.
But if we turn up, we're nearly impossible to beat. I'll take a draw, a good sing-song and a nice curry please!CT Bantam, Onside, Gardscoigne and 1 other person like this. -
