Its fundamentally not racist. Stupid and inflammatory in its intent, but not in any way racist. Just very stupid, all things considered.

Its no more or less racist than saying Black Lives Matter.

The intent may have been inflammatory and sought to provoke a racially based reaction. Its organisers may be racist - I've no idea. The words aren't racist. How can they be? We can't have double standards. We can't say 'black lives matter' is fine, but 'white lives matter', or 'Asian Lives Matter', or 'All Lives Matter' aren't acceptable. Its hypocrisy and a reflection of the mess made of an important issue, a demonstration of how striving to achieve equality through an unequal use of language/action will never work.

The BLM is about raising awareness and tackling racism. This was a racially motivated attempt to cause division and was totally racist

The BLM is about much more than that.

That's your take on it, and I don't disagree with the intent being to provoke. Some people are becoming frustrated at aspects of how an important topic is being played out, so reactions are to be expected and some - like this, will be at the hands of people who have apparent ties to racist behaviours. I'm saying, the words aren't racist. And when we start taking action and criminalizing the use of legal words because of a perceived racist intent, things get very slippery. It erodes free speech, which is the cornerstone of democracy.

I fully agree with freedom of speech when it’s on context. This was racially aggravated so very much against the principle

That's not how freedom of speech works. You can't protect freedom of speech but only when its based on things you agree with. As distasteful as you may find this - as I do, given its likely intent - you can't criminalise legal wording based on a subjective view of why those words were used. That never leads anywhere good. You have to look beyond the specific incident when it comes to free speech. Its why I made the comment I did yesterday around Islamic extremists not being arrested for waiving placards with slogans like 'British Soldiers Burn in hell'.

I see the police have declared, as expected, that no criminal act took place.

You cant say that what is in context to some is incitement to others.

There was nothing 'racist' in the words on the banner imo. But I do agree with you that there appears to have been an intent to be racially provocative for whatever reason. The banner was well planned and organised and will have cost someting approaching a thousand pound if our own 'Rahic' banner was typical. I doubt it was a single individual who arranged this.

The reality however is that there is nothing in law to stop anybody being a racist. You can stand in a public area and announce yourself as a racist but in itself it isn't unlawful. You might well find yourself on the receiving end of something similar though! Outing yourself as a racist might be stupid but it isn't illegal. It's illegal to discriminate on the grounds of racial differences; it's an offence to be a member of a proscribed racially-motivated group and it's an offence to incite racial hatred. Some might argue that is exactly what was intended and given the involvement of an EDL supporter in the stunt, that might have some credence. But it would have caused such a furore if the police and CPS had pursued a prosecution and would also have raised questions about the BLM campaign.

Hopefully Burnley can do something and take action against their fan who was part of it.

NEW EXCLUSIVE: Jake Hepple, who posted a video of the stunt online and has used the P*** word on Facebook and Twitter, admitted he sometimes gets 'a bit drunk and coked up and uses offensive language'. But despite this confession, the 24-year-old from Colne, near Burnley, insisted to MailOnline: 'I'm not racist. I know people are trying to make out to be one but I'm not. I've got lots of Black and Asian friends and this banner was actually inspired by the Black Lives Movement.' Mr Hepple said police visited him at home on Tuesday evening to tell him he would not face any criminal charges and also offered him protection should he or his family face any threats in the future as a result of the banner.

The sort we see more and more at football these days, clad in the latest designer gear high as kites on sniff, lately to be found protecting inanimate objects but not sure why they're doing it.

His girlfriend sounds as bad too. Suspended from her job after she apparently tweeted for foreigners to be sent back on banana boats.

The lad himself is part of the far right Burnley fans known as the suicide squad.

    They sound a charming couple

Free speech comes with responsibility for instance you can’t say something that incites someone to harm another
