It’s a nonsensical survey question. Of course its present, who’d think otherwise? It’s a completely subjective question and there’s a lot of hype around it.

If racism is rife in society, where’s the evidence?

 

Just because i don't agree with the ramblings of a half wit on a message board doesn't mean i and i suspect others bury their head in the sand. Its not something i waste too much time thinking about, it was here before i was born and will be here long after i've gone. Thats not to say i think its right but honestly with this pandemnic and just trying to survive, i've far more important things to think about.

I would just like to thank everyone that protested today.

Thank you for ignoring the sacrifices that Nurses, Doctors, care workers, delivery drivers, supermarket workers, key workers and everyone that has kept us alive and going through this crisis.

Thank you for dishonoring those 40,000 that have died in the U.K. and the family’s that mourn them.

Thank you for disrespecting the 10’s of millions who have been at home; alone, lonely and away from their mum's, dads, grandparents, children and friends.

Thank you for your sheer and absolute arrogance that makes your protest spread this virus to so many more people who will die.

To play devil’s advocate, why should the Colston statue have remained standing?

Throughout history statues and monuments have been removed and pulled down according to how appropriate they are contemporaneously. It’s scarcely arguable that we should be publicly commemorating somebody like this.

You may not agree with the general motivations of the people doing it, but statues like this were put up in the late 19th century as a sign of the insecurity of an anxious empire. I’m way more comfortable with this being a target of somebody’s anger than businesses and livelihoods.

 

I dont give a stuff about the statue, or the motivations behind why it was pulled down. This is supposed to be a civilised democracy, people dont get to cause criminal damage just because they have a strong opinion. Is it better than burning out a business or causing injury - both of which have been happening with these protests - yes. Doesnt make it right or justified just because it's less destructive.

 

So what, we have a vote before we consider whether an - at best - extremely divisive statue should remain standing?

This thing was put up to rewrite history in the first place, and people have been campaigning to get rid of it for decades. This kind of thing has happened throughout history in both civilised democracies and outside of them. Should the communist statues have remained in those former bloc states? Plenty argued that they should, and I’m sure there were criminal damage laws in those states, too.

If it’s presence is inappropriate, and feel free to argue that it is, then where’s the problem?

 

I'm sure the police will have loads of pictures to prosecute these lawless acts, lets await them being brought before the law.

Yes, I think the government has been looking for any reason to put the foot in on the protests without it effectively throwing a fresh petrol bomb over proceedings, and in this they’ve probably found one.

In that sense, it’s potentially quite politically damaging to the cause.

I'd have thought that's exactly what a civilised society does, mob rule cant be the answer.....................can it ?.

 

I'm gathering a mob , tomorrow we march on York to burn down/ destroy the Yorvik centre , them viking bastards murdered - raped - pillaged then enslaved the country for years , then knock down the Roman walls destroy the statues and monuments i mean them bastards were worse than the Vikings . Sounds daft ?, well thats what these retards are doing in London and Bristol etc etc .

 

And Dominic Cummings was the bogyman last week, quite ironic I've not seen many of those posters who were asking for him to lose his job criticising what's been going on at these rallies.

 

Its criminal damage, there's the problem. Mob rule vandalism, which has nothing to do with who the statue depicts. I dont care about it not being there, I care about how it's been pulled down.

Yes, a civilised discourse to effect the solution - would've taken longer and may not have even worked, but would have been a much more powerful message.
