    https://you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/remove-the-edward-colston-statue-from-bristol-city-centre?bucket&source=facebook-share-button&time=1591119305&utm_campaign&utm_source=facebook&share=d20ed235-f13a-4959-a06a-fd99dd9d7e94&fbclid=IwAR20VPeTfcewycIMCIkFNPc_W2Sy9VVNbHncGA352K1KpEmppi-y7FUV7iA

This was an effort, a petition with 11k signatures to it. It's an excuse to be lawless and it suits their current narrative, where were they all when the petition was originally raised? Or is it because they've found a bandwagon for their hatred and jumped right on it?

More concerning behaviour than what? Desecrating war memorials and a statue of Churchill? Assaulting police officers? Rioting, looting etc. Is that not concerning enough? The churchill statue is encased in a concrete block, as is the war memorial on Whitehall. If they could have been toppled easily, I'd wager they would have been.

Identity politics, SJW chaos brought to bear. This is what happens when the left goes too far.

The vast majority wouldn't have even heard the name Edward Colston as with yourself I was not aware of him or his exploits in slave trading , his statue was erected with regards his philanthropy back in his time, it was 1662 how long do people pay for the sins of the forefathers back in 1662 ?.

One onlooker saying : the Police idly watched as it was thrown in the water.

Honestly? I think we’ve got more pressing jumping off points than some paint on a statue and speculating on the possibility of what could have happened were said statue moored less securely. I find it mildly problematic, but realistically I don’t think it’s that big of a deal. I think it’s being escalated to make a point. And the more people kick off at these things, the worse it’s going to get.

Assaulting police officers and looting? Of course, I’m happy to condemn that in the strongest of terms - and I think everybody should. But they’re not the same thing as the above. I sincerely hope the guy who threw the bike at a police horse, among others, and people throwing things at the police, are arrested and prosecuted.

I get a sense from a lot of people (and I’m not including yourself, for clarity, as I’m certain you’re discussing this in good faith) that they’re just begging for the rioters to do something catastrophically dumb to give them the fuel to kick off. I saw on Twitter a group of football lads from Plymouth today ‘guarding’ a war memorial statue. What is the point of doing this if you weren’t ultimately after a bit of a scrap? Can well imagine they’d be disappointed to go home empty handed. You can say the same thing about a lot of the self-appointed militias guarding US protests too, they’re just gagging for a scrap.

I dont think it's as dismissive as paint on a statue. It's a gesture that speaks to the hatred and loathing of this country by those who are rioting. I think theres something about the point of those lads in plymouth making their own cheap pitch for social media 'fame', but these memorials are a testament to the proudest period of our history - where this nation, and others, stood AGAINST fascism and racism in order to preserve our freedoms. The desecration we've seen is about more than just a coat of paint that can be cleaned, its about the mentality and venom, the division that exists right now. And it's a division that the SJW frenzy is making worse.

How far will this crap be allowed to go ? ( no not this thread ) but the actual government ? I can see the situation escalating , the vast majority in this country are level headed and keep an open mind , but i can also see groups being raised to " protect " memorials and points of other national importance . The fact the Police are standing back and letting it happen annoys me . i wonder what would happen if there was a major clash at 1 of these memorials ? . The government as got to stop it now by force if required , because if they dont it could errupt into major civil disturbences . I've noticed on a lot of websites calling for " volunteers " to form protection areas around statues etc . Like some 1 said earlier armed vigilanties are taking to the streets in Major USA cities , i for 1 dont want to see it happen here , but it could minus the weapons .

I think there was an inevitability to where this scenario has ended up. What started as a protest against the needless death of an unarmed man incapable of defending himself turns into the divide and conquer situation that politicians love. As Hoochy alluded to, while the minnions at the bottom fight over who's got the moral right to be more offended, the ones at the top know their subtle work is done. People burning down their own communities, slogans daubed on war memorials, short term thinking that does little to change the lives of those affected in the long term.

The thing with the Slave trade as well for some reason the black community forget one major fact. Europeans weren’t turning up in Africa and snatching people. They were sold to them at slave markets with the sellers being natives of the country. One tribe would goto war with another and part of the spoils the winner got was to take the losers survivors as slave and they were selling their own people and it was going on long before the Atlantic slave trade started. This idea that it’s those of white European decent who are the only ones with blood on their hands is completely false. Putting the blame on just white people is another example of them wanting an easy target to vent at while ignoring how complicate their own ancestors were in the situation and all that does is cause more divide. It’s not something to shame just one race with hundreds of years later, it’s something that if we are still going to hold it over today’s generations it has to be held over all races because even if they weren’t ever involved in the African slave trade pretty much ever group of people through history has taken slaves to sell.

Also it’s pretty hypocritical to want to boil someone like Colston down to one thing, a slave trader. If you read up on him it’s far from that simple. He had already made significant amounts of money from the trade of things like food, precious metal, fabric and the likes before investing in the Royal African Company. They weren’t specifically a slave trading company although did transport a fair amount and while he rose up the board of directors he only spent 12 years associated with the company. We have no idea how much he made that could be attributed to slavery at that time and we know nothing about why he left the company for all we know he could have realised his error of his ways and that’s why he gave away so much of his money to better the town. When they are pushing a narrative that Floyd was a gentle giant rather than defining him by his previous mistakes it just seems unfair to boil someone else down to 12 years of involvement in a trading company.

I think you’re right. I didn’t see it turning out quite like this, but I should have because, as you say, it was completely inevitable.

People end up getting suckered in to defending these narratives in the beginning in perfectly good faith, and they just get warped out of all perspective to the end that the point you were originally arguing bears little resemblance to the one you end up having to defend.

C.S Lewis wrote this in 1942, and it’s just as prescient today as it was then:

“Your patient must demand that all his own utterances are to be taken at their face value and judged simply on the actual words, while at the same time judging all his mother’s utterances with the fullest and most oversensitive interpretation of the tone and the context and the suspected intention. She must be encouraged to do the same to him. Hence from every quarrel they can both go away convinced, or very nearly convinced, that they are quite innocent. You know the kind of thing: “I simply ask her what time dinner will be and she flies into a temper.” Once this habit is well established you have the delightful situation of a human saying things with the express purpose of offending and yet having agrievance when offence is taken.”

The problem the police have is even if it’s doing their job perfectly if they get involved they open themselves up to being called racists and any social media campaign will get them suspended if not outright fired
