I love how somehow they know 'much' of his wealth came from slavery. No-one knows how much of his money came from Slavery. He was already rich before investing in Royal African Company, they didn’t exclusively deal in slaves anyway, he withdrew from the company within 12 years and he had other businesses. It’s typical rewriting history to fit a cause, why can’t people like those behind the petition just tell the truth, if you have an actual point you shouldn’t need to deviate from know facts

I'm not defending his hand in the slave trade but here we are having people dimmish positive contributions he did have by making what is almost certainly exaggerated statements. There is no data showing that most of the money he made and gave away came from the slave trade and he pulled out of the company for reasons we don’t know. If we are only allowed statues of perfect people I guess every statue in the world needs pulled down.

And If someone’s bad actions are enough to override the good then there should be no need to exaggerate .

This video actually made me feel sick to the stomach, racist for moving items off a monument. More proof that racist is a new buzz word that is likely to get slung at you at the earliest opportunity.

You seem to come in trying to defend racist's actions time and again. What's your agenda?

Wise words from Hollywood actor Terry Crews, who happens to be a black man. It denotes what we need to do together to tackle racism and injustice yet if you read the comments to it you realise the vast majority of the people making them are too thick to be allowed to even join the debate.

In 1823 Racist Britain used over 40 % of it's annual budget to buy all the slaves in Empire and freed them . The cost was that great that the debt was only paid off in 2015 . This also means most Tax payers alive today have helped pay off this debt . Of course " enlightened " nations continued this dispicable trade , including most of America and Europe , slavery is still prevelent through out Africa - the middle and far east . I wonder how many protesters on the streets over the last week or so buy clothes from Primark - Mattalan and the like ?, these are made by slave workers paid a pitence in sweat shops , double standards and hypocrisy or shrewd look how much i've saved outlook .

I’m not taking a position on the person in question, but an ignorance to, or unwillingness to make fact and data a key part of the conversation is the only way to perpetuate the media and mass narrative around the racism discussion.

If you look, there ARE balanced and moderate views being shared by prominent black people in the US. David Webb, Larry Elder, Coleman Hughes to name a few. You do have to look harder to find them though. For anyone who’s interested, these are very thought provoking, insightful and balanced views:

Slavery looks to increasingly be part of the media and social narrative around racism. Thankfully, the US and UK has progressed to a point whereby you’ll have to go to fairly extreme lengths to find anyone who’d consider slavery to be anything other than a bad or immoral thing. What irks me though, is that whilst people are quick to castigate the role of white people in perpetuating slavery (quite rightly - though slavery has never been the sole purview of any race), there’s a complete ignorance or disregard for the leading role that white people had in abolishing it. It could and should be a much more empowering story - the defeat of slavery, rather than being fixated on its creation. I understand the historic anger, but its been defeated! We live in a free democracy, where inclusion and diversity is embedded in just about every walk of life you could care to name.

The slave trade is alive and well in this country right now, i worked on a job about two years ago where Eastern Europeans polish immigrants were beaten with lengths of wood to work harder, they all lived together and the ganag master would instill the beatings. I asked why one or two of them kept falling asleep, its because they were doing two shifts in a day for different 'businessmen', not their choice mind. People who choose to take the moral highground don't have a clue what happens in the real world.

Indeed, I was coming at it from the point of view of white/black slavery. The example you’ve given would be a crime though. I’m not saying there aren’t examples of what you’ve said happening all over the world, but it’s been criminalised and isn’t a reflection of black oppression.

The sex trade being another example. Poverty is the disease we need to cure.

Was only a slave trader for 12 years. What a gent.

Whether he made all his money from it or not he profited and was able to maintain his wealth through the slave trade.
Threw 12000 people over board I think because they died on a voyage.
However we need to be careful the British empire was built on atrocities like this all over the world. Whether we like it or not.

However the good thing is we seem to have learnt from it to where we are today

So did you take the moral high ground and notify the police to come and rescue these people?

I have a question for our left leaning friends on here.

How come the left wing anarchists causing trouble at these BLM protests probably vote or support a party that is currently being investigated by the Equalities and Human Rights Commission for racism?

Unlike you I'm just able to see that things aren’t just Black and White, situations are complex. You judging someone who did a lot of good because he made an unknown amount of money from an investment in a company who part of their business was transporting slaves from an era where slavery of all races was still fairly common. When we don’t know how much he actually made directly from slavery or at any point his stance on it then diminishing his contributions to helping those less well off based solely of today’s standards. People are allowed to grow and learn are they not? Is that not why people are making out that Floyd was a 'gentle giant' ignoring his past of violent crime because our worst moments shouldn’t be the only thing that defines us, we are able to make amends and offset any past mistakes or any character flaws are we not
