That’s referring t a different type of training. Training as is physical training done by professional sports people is part of what they are contracted for and will count as work.

While you would hope they do the basic level of fitness training there is a big difference between between the highly specialised scientific training that experts can put in place and what someone who is basically an amateur would be able to come up with even with all the equipment

Technically the players are working from home so why shouldn't they continue with their fitness regime?

thought it might, the training it refers to would be something like them watching stuff to learn how to score, cos none of them can currently

    Exactly.

Essentially a furloughed employee is no longer working for the company (in this case the club) for a given period of time (up to 3 months I believe). If they want to qualify for the 80% government scheme they can undertake no duties for the company as they have essentially been temporary laid off.

A number of people at my work have been furloughed, with a few other employees (including myself) asked to work from home. My employer however is not making up the extra 20% and so the furloughed employees are on a reduced salary.

I can understand this at the lower level, at the level of the Premier League it is pure greed, especially when the clubs expecting the Gov to pay their staff will table multimillion pound bids later in the year without any sense of guilt.

That’s because saving £2.5k from a Premier League players wages is peanuts. And all they can do without breaching contract terms is to let the gov pick up £2.5k and pay the players the rest.

It either needs the PFA to change its tune or all players at a club to choose to ignore the PFA and approach the club as a group proposing cutting their wage so that it’s the players choice not the club trying to force it

Totally agree, Premier League clubs furloughing players would be the worst possible cause of action in terms in terms of PR, it would make no difference to the players or the clubs, but would be an additional drain on the nation.

I'm not aware of what the PFA are saying, but players en masse should not be accepting guidance on a financial basis at this point, they should be doing what (they think) is right.

Jon, you and Simon are spot on but whilst Comrade Taylor is still at the PFA on salary of £1mil plus there is no chance of them doing anything. Best thing he could do is call a strike which would be illegal, render players in breach of contract and allow Clubs to terminate contracts.
This business of players training whilst on furlough is academic. As I said on another thread many days ago, in my humble opinion the season won't continue. Wimbledon in June/ July, off. Edinburgh Festival in August, off. French tennis next month, off. No cricket until beginning of June at earliest. Lower leagues in football and rugby stopped now. Leeds Rhinos furlough staff until June as a starter, it goes on and on. Think the SFL have stopped and heard from a mate up there the SPL will stop any day soon so training or not training is academic in my view, get planning for Season 20/21 to start November 21st I say.

Not sure how much longer Taylor will survive in that job. Some revelations come out yesterday I think in telegraph about funding and his son receiving payments. Surprised in this day and age the top players don’t demand some better representation than the PFA

Wimbledon got cancelled because tennis involves people travelling from all over the world and its grass season. The French has moved to September.

You say start next month season in November but owners are coming out and saying no one cares about transfers at this moment. As I say does anyone care about transfers? And why wouldn't you just end this season in September and then start next season in November? Just ending this season makes no sense. None! People are not going to rush and buy season tickets when many find themselves in a difficult financial position.

The problem with next season at this moment is a lockdown can happen again next winter? Then what? Also if a player gets corona virus then what?

We need to solved the problems of this season to concentrate on next.

Also I think many would take a little bit of football, sport soon as it's a sign of hope getting us through this thing. A little bit of enjoyment even if it's behind closed doors.

The PFA are a joke. I agree with you on that.

Whatever the general population think of Taylor he has done fine job for his members. They are untouchable

Behind closed doors would kill many clubs more than no football at all though. Most of the expenses of running the match still exist when it’s behind closed doors but you get none of the revenue. Atleast with no football the clubs don’t have some of the expenses and as we are seeing can try and find ways to reduce others to allow them to get through

If we have to play behind closed doors, then the only way to save most lower league clubs would be a FIFA grant imo

Think it was worked out it would cost 40m to cover all the EFL clubs taking league average crowds.

Like it or not the EFL, FA, government, the footballing bodies, tv, Bookies will need to help sporting clubs out.

We need to figure out a solution to this season because next season is something that can be moved to any date. Fans won't be rushing to buy season tickets when many can't or won't be paying their mortgage. It's not easy as just saying forget this season and move on to next.

Behind closed doors (unless mass gatherings are allowed) get the season finished and give us something else to talk about than this virus when the time is right.

My feeling is with a few key boxing matches rearranged for July that sport will be back in the summer hopefully.
