Premier league players earn obscene amounts of money and the state shouldn’t be giving them a penny. Collectively they should help to pay the wages of non playing staff at the clubs

Boris and Hancock earn in a year what most Prem footballers earn in a month. Whats your point?

Whatever your take on it, in respect of politics, then Johnson is still actually doing what he is paid to do, which is act as Prime Minister. Footballers are paid to play football, they are not doing this at the minute.

Just to be clear, Under new rules from March 1 and running for at least three months, companies can “furlough” employees rather than fire them. Through the scheme, the government will pay up to 80 per cent of a persons wages, up to a maximum of £2,500 per month. So if footballers are furloughed, then irrespective of the level they play at or the salary they are on, then there is a defined ceiling of £2,500. I guess that is more than sufficient for most City players, to live on. I agree that many Premiership players are paid obscene amounts. Perhaps the PFA can give them interest free loans if they face financial difficulty? Remember the PFA has an annual turnover and net asset position of circa £24million and £48million respectively, putting the union in a strong financial position!

Its a good point - footballers are easy targets in many respects. The context has been skewed though - the original question to Matt Hancock was specifically in the context of non-playing staff being furloughed, not an arbitrary 'footballers should take pay cuts'. Its not right that non-playing staff, who're largely going to be on modest incomes, be furloughed and possibly lose out financially when very, very highly paid football players are exempt from any financial impact. The question has been raised and its unfair to pass judgement until there's a fresh response. I suspect that most players will be prepared to make a sacrifice for the greater good, given the circumstances. But similar questions need to be asked elsewhere. Example - Richard Branson wants a taxpayer bailout of his airline. This is the same fella who, as the major shareholder for that airline, is worth over £4bn, has his own island, does everything he can to offshore his businesses to minimize tax contributions and who's previously SUED the NHS for not being awarded a contract he thought they should've been awarded! That's far more deserving of scrutiny.

That can't happen until we have a vaccine, until then this horrible disease can reap havoc around the world again and people will be forever aware of that.

What?? Where do you get the content of your first paragraph from?
In my 7 years on the Board and 4 years since I can count on one hand how many owners of L1 & L2 clubs fall in that category and I suspect only half those in the Championship.

If you don't care how much people have or earn, why are you talking about the owners funding everything when it isn't a legal obligation?

Haven't you been saying for months what Rupp should be doing with his money and at the same time have said you wouldn't be willing to put any of your own money into the club because there is no return to be earned? And now your view is that owners can do whatever they want since it's up to them. Flip flop, flip flop!

Actually, his ideas go much, much further than Hancock's. He seems to view Hancock as an untrustworthy Tory.

If you search up what Mark Noble has also done, he's invested heavily in social housing and is pretty apparently a socialist at heart, criticising the amount of money he and other players are paid, but counterbalancing that by giving lots of his own earnings for charitable purposes.

Owners worth billions and can’t pay wages or people probably only on around 500 a month.

Largely why I've never been able to take to Liverpool. Fantastic football team, and I think Klopp is top drawer. But there's a sense of 'holier than thou' about them. A self grandiose mentality.

They won't be alone in doing this though. Spurs have done it. And I saw something earlier that Burnley could be into Admin by August if the season doesn't get going by then.

Aren't Burnley currently mid-table in the PL so of course I'd expect them to be paying their squad PL wages to compete there! Do you think they'd be where they are by continuing to pay Championship wages? No! Historically, they aren't big payers by PL standards but last season when they finished in the lower third of the PL, their wages bill was still over £80 mill!

Irrespective of how the final table is created, I can't imagine Burnley being remotely close to being relegated. Their issue is more concerned with whether the big money they rely on from Sky is significantly reduced if the TV schedule can't be completed. And that same concern must be shared by many other clubs in the PL who rely predominantly on TV rights.

apparently so, but as they are making the wage up they may be allowed to ask them to do training, not sure.
