I'm not sure about your comment about him being in front of Wright in Bowyer's own pecking order but Bowyer does seem to rate Danny. I happen to disagree with Bowyer on this!

But I think Devine is currently our only club developed player and for us to have 7 subs, we have to have a CDP in the matchday squad. Maybe that also had a bearing on Bowyer's decision to keep him for the next 12 months?

Our fans don't half lick our academy players arses or if they are from Bradford.

We gave Devine a 3 year deal and he's not even improved. Such a pointless contract extension

Almost 22 now and still not broken through. Waste of a wage.

@ me all you want. You'll see in a years time I am and was correct

Spot on. If he was like Omari Patrick and plucked from someone else's youth team our fans would actually see how poor he really is, rather than hyping him up because he's "one of our own".

It's not pointless is it. He'll be a cheaper option, can play in a couple positions and will be a good squad player at worst. He hasn't had the chances that he should have been given and lost most of last season with injury.

If he doesn't play much this season then he leaves at the end of next season. Simple as that.

To be honest, I couldn't care less if he's from our academy or whether he's from Bradford or Timbuktu.

you might well be right, however we need a home grown player for squad rules, he looked useful when McCall played him, he's a cheap squad filler who can do a job if and when hes needed.
I'm not sure if it escaped your attention, but we are in League 2, we're on the bones of our arses because of Edin, and we have players under contract earning not far off 10k a week. we need to cut our cloth accordingly, and if that means keeping Danny Devine as a squad option then I'm quite happy with that.

Pretty sure Bowyer looked at the team and accepted we were down early on and used the last 5 games or so as trials for next season

I disagree with this. Homegrown or local players players over the years seem to get more stick than at other clubs. Maybe fans think they should be showing more passion or elements of jealously I don't know but its an annoying Bradford trait and partially explains why we don't bring through much youth. less so than most other clubs.

Just to be clear, 'home grown players' are not the same as 'club developed players' in EFL terms. We now have to have 7(!) home grown players in the matchday squad but all 'home grown' means is that they've been at any EFL or PL club for three years during their development. Cesc Fabregas is a HGP! On the other hand, a club developed player has to have come up through the club's own development route prior to their 19th birthday which is why Devine is a rare commodity at VP these days.

How does that work then Dennis. There are 7 places on the bench and if all 7 have to be HGP how will clubs be able to put a foreigner on the bench, which leagues does that apply to, how are clubs such as utd, city, Chelsea going to get round that rule if it includes the premier League?

In the EFL, it's 7 HGPs in the matchday squad, not just on the bench. It's a silly rule in my view since in the EFL, it has never been an issue other than possibly for teams relegated from the PL.

It's slightly different in the PL since they have to have 8 HGPs in their 25 man squad and has been for several seasons. But that doesn't preclude 'foreigners' since players like Fabregas met the criteria having spent 3 years at Arsenal during his development. There are many other 'foreigners' who also meet the criteria.

The PL rules are pretty straightforward
At present, Premier League clubs are allowed a maximum of 25 players in their first-team squad.
If teams want to take full advantage of that maximum player allowance, eight of them must be homegrown.
'Home Grown' simply means that a player must have been on the books of a club affiliated with the Football Association for at least three years before they turn 21 – it does not mean that they have to be English.
An important caveat is that teams can use as many under-21 players as they like in addition to their main squad, regardless of nationality.

I think that was more to do with what Bowyer inherited with regards the loan player law/rule, wasn't Clarke contracted to City where as Payne was a loan ?.

I had read it as 7 HGP on the bench, wasn't exactly sure of the rules anyway so thanks for clarifying.

I actually think it sometimes works against Home grown players. They get paid big wages and high transfer fees as clubs have to have them in their squad. However they don't play and get stale. But because they are on high wages they can't or won't seek playing time abroad. look how the likes of Sancho etc have massively improved after showing some b*lls and moving on

Cheers, I know about Fabregas and other players, my confusion was based on the bench rule I had misread from Dennis. I just thought it was a new rule I hadn't seen that would restrict signing players from abroad as they would be unable to be in the bench. I know you sign somebody to put them on the bench, but equally you wouldn't sign anybody with a cast iron starting guarantee.

Which rule is that? Surely it’s at the clubs discretion as to who they choose to start. Payne didn’t have that clause in his contract from Jan.

The EFL's rule. Matchday squads are only entitled to have a maximum of 5 loan players. We had 6 on the books - O'Brien, Miller, Payne, Ball, Butterfield and O'Connor - so one of them couldn't be named in the squad.
