Solvet was the CB. Played CM at Eccleshill and was ok but was much much better today.

 

Agree with pretty much all you have said but thought Norty Norty was pretty anonymous after he came on. Looks like a poor mans Akpan IMHO. Thats not a glowing assessment really.

So they ARE now an ambitious club but at 6.01pm today they weren't so what exactly happened in the last hour or so to change your mind?

 

He did have a good game. He played wide right and generally looked to attack at every opportunity. Won a few tackles and made an excellent run to set up Vaughan for a free shot at goal-that was deflected just over the bar. Noticeably after that a few players went to Gibson to pat him on the back and say well done. Clearly he is a confidence player and looked confident.

 

Confidence. That is what it is all about with this team. For the first 10 minutes Donaldson had the touch of an elephant and Mellor thought the ball was a red hot potato, to be got rid of straight away. It was much the same with the others as well but Gradually though you could see the confidence building, both in themselves and their confidence in the other players in the team. At times they put some nice moves together and what it needs now is for them all to continue to get used to each other, where/when to make the runs; whether to pass to feet or for the receiver to run on to etc. This will come with time and if, and I know it's a definitely maybe if, we can get off to a good start in the first few matches and pick up points then there is no reason IMO why we can't be challenging this season.
As others have said we still need another couple in, someone to challenge Akpan although I thought he was better today, and someone to fill the wide left position as I don't think Gibson is the long term answer there.
With regard to the "second team" it was Nortey in midfield and the French lad at the back. This was no doubt just to get them on the field and fill the centre back position which we were short in.
I presume today's starting team will be the one for Cambridge unless he fits Anderson in as the absence of the others so far must surely mean they will be playing catch up from now on.

 

He needs a good run in the side. First half today he was non existent bar a couple of tackles. I think hes more effective in field rather than hugging the touchline. Just started getting into the game second half when the substitutions came.
