The substitution will go down in City folklore.
People will remember it in the same way as other landmarks such as Workington 64 (for the oldies), Darlington 69, Wolves 99, Stuart on the car roof, Premier league survival and that bloody substitution at Carlisle 23.

Glad to see this thread up an running again so the memories of that fateful day come back to the forefront of my mind

Havent seen a substitution as idiotic as that in my time supporting City. Bringing off our only winger, just to park the bus whilst drawing the tie.

Who would we even of had take the penalties had the substitution worked the Hughes wanted it to? Besides Derbyshire, Cook & maybe Smallwood, I wouldn't trust the rest to convert theirs.

Shit game management. I don't care how anyone tries to spin it

I'm gonna stick my neck on the line and say that taking Banks off isn't the reason we then conceded.

Everyone was sore at the time, and an attempt to see the game out with a more defensive unit obviously didn't work out the way Hughes wanted.

But it wasn't the substitution that made that happen. I'm surprised this hysteria hasn't died down a little since then. The substitution just limited our chances of getting back into the game, which we clearly shouldn't have had to do with an extra defender on the pitch in the first place.

We aren't in League Two because we took Banks off for a few minutes ahead of a potential date at Wembley FFS.

It was just part of failed tactics over the whole tie but it was irrational

Unless you're happy to have faith in the old saying, the best form of defence is attack?

I'm not saying we should have thrown men forward at will but taking off someone occupying one of their wing backs was madness as Carlisle's main attacking threat was either through them or the overlapping centre halves.

Losing width and making us even more narrow just played into their hands as they had all the room they wanted to create over loads and cross the ball.

Taking the winger off did not lose us the game, Putting another defender on did, The confusion it caused by the CBs then leaving the ball not knowing who was responsible between them with the extra CB handed the goal on a plate to them. As an experienced manager Hughes should have known the danger of tinkering with the defence in the final minutes, Very poor management and hope he raises his game this season

I'd suggest bringing an extra defender on with only 12 minutes to go upset the formation at the back, its plain to see when the ball came in none of the 3 CD were in position to challenge for the cross giving the lad Barclay a free run and a free header, he put another big lad on admitting in his post match interview "to see the game out for penalties", I'll give Hughes credit for his honesty but it was a dumb change so late into the game. I
f we had been a goal to the good as we were against Gillingham its more logical Gillingham have to score to get anything from the game, but to make that change to take the game to penalties made no sense IMO, or he didn't have faith in the 11 on the pitch who had just got us back on level terms to maybe sneak another or see the game out in a positive manner than take it to penalties.
Just as an aside how many on here would have prefered Banks still on the pitch to take a penalty than in the dug out, no guarantees he would have scored but the kid must have been buzzing.

It will take a fan with big balls to call Hughes out in front of 300+ fans at that supporters forum with regards the Carlisle game.

That's what meetings are for Dave, to air your concerns, (no matter who is at the table, Hughes does not get a free ride!) give praise or whatever.
How many times have we been to these meetings and said our piece?
Only Big Geoff was able to swing it round into his favour!!!

I agree just not sure a fan will pull him on his call at Carlisle, quoting the previous time he made exactly the same substitution against Gillingham and how it turned out.

Oh yes I remember taking big Geoff on at the inauguration of the opening a new supporters branch at the Fat Pot WMC, he didn't like being challenged, similar to Jack Tordoff when you offered him a £20 bet (which was a lot of brass back in those says) with regards both Stuart & John Hendrie leaving if we didn't get promoted.

I can just imagine the intro to the meeting including a statement like 'We do not wish to dwell on the past let's all look ahead to the new season, no questions about what might have been please'.

I just don't see how it actually affected anything.

If we hadn't made that sub, I can't imagine Banks would have somehow prevented Carlisle scoring.

I know why it was unpopular, but let's be honest that sub =/= losing.

The only rational explanation I can think of for MHs thinking is that he must have made the decision based on how we had played up to that point. We were so bad on the day that he decided that the one goal was the most we were going to get and therefore having equalised he was looking to see the game out and take our chances with pens.
Not saying I agree with that view - totally the opposite but its the only explanation I can think of for the decision which was one of the biggest 'heads gone' moments I've seen.

It represents a state of mind we had equalised and had the momentum and in a stroke gave it back negativity struck again

I explained in my post why I felt tactically it offered Carlisle more attacking impetus but obviously it's just opinion at the end of the day and I'm sure everyone has their own opinion of it.

I will stick my neck out though and say that if Hughes doesn't make that sub, we would have at least took the game to penalties. Clearly that can't be proven but it's what I believe.

It's a good discussion and still on topic of the thread. If you don't want to join in then don't, no one is forcing anyone.
