Once again were in an area that a figure can't be put on it if they have entered illegally that suggests no government know the number and that is parties of all political persuasion yes I would think if they have been brought in by traffickers it wont be a good life as they might if expected, maybe another reason they should go down the legal route as many have in the past.
I dont think anyone has disagreed these people are desperate it must be hell living in some of those countries, so why do they not claim asylum in the first safe country they enter, unless as you posted they are told to move on, which I could understand with regards the likes of Greece and Italy.

You're correct governments over the years have never got a grip on the issue as you say.

In many cases its not so much that they are 'desperate', they are just after a better life anywhere but then get sold this utopian dream of the UK by the criminals. And there is a massive opertunity in the UK's black market so its not a completly false dream. They then pay only to have the criminals work out ways to up the price after payment. That then gets them having to work the debt off, debt they will never work off because the criminals are also charging them things like accomadation costs so they get stuck in it. If they could get out of it though there is a decent amount they could make, perhaps not alot by our standards but compared to what they make at home its a decent amount

Sounds plausible and the really scary thing is that the authorities don't seem to be doing very much about it.

And that is what is perpetuating the situation.

How many car washes have sprung up in the last few years-money laundering and slave labour? Probably. Willing labour always available.

I don't think there is that much that they can do really. If they get in a position to raid them all they end up getting is a bunch of illegals and a few low level people. They setup in such a way that any losses due to a raid are limited, nothing ever gets near those behind it so they never get implicated and if they lose some workers they have plenty more waiting in the wings. So they just setup somewhere else. It would need that supply across the channel to be stopped or atleast massivly dented to have much impact on closing down anything using black market trade

It looks like the EU and the UK have not been able to agree a policy about migrants/asylum seekers after the UK leaves. So expect a dramatic increase in numbers coming from Europe, with no system whatsoever to return people to Europe.

‘EU negotiators have rejected a British request for a migration pact that would allow the government to return asylum seekers to other European countries.

When the Brexit transition period expires on 31 December, the government will lose the right to transfer refugees and migrants to the EU country in which they arrived, a cornerstone of the European asylum system known as the Dublin regulation‘.

Still we have left the EU so we will just have to ‘get on with it’, as we have ‘taken control of our borders’.

Yes because figures for a shadow economy are so well documented that you can get it in such detail. It's not like the actual economy where official records are available, those working in the shadow economy do so in secret so its all just estimates

If you could be arsed to do a search on Shadow Economy of the UK you would get the figure. You won't get a full break down like you want but the estimate is there

This is why I asked for a breakdown. what proportion of that is things like russian dark money and what proportion is failed asylum seekers working at car washes for example. not expecting anything mega detailed but reasonable estimates will do

I can';t be arsed because I'm not the one trying to say anything about it. It's all well and good implying I'm being lazy but I'm under no obligation to go out and find evidence for someone else's claim, that would be ridiculous. It's important to have a breakdown because the shadow economy will be made up of loads of different things and not just illegal immigrants, which is why just posting the total figure isn't enough.
