Problem is we finished 9th and I would say Mansfield and Salford who finished below us have improved.

Id say Salford and bolton have strengthened a lot, port vale and Mansfield less so.
We all remember what happened to Mansfield last season when we all thought theyd go up via autos!

At the moment I see a play off team. We have gone up against higher division teams and only lost by a goal each time. We get this defence a bit tighter and i see maybe an auto side.

I agree completely, another side simply has to make one good signing and there are those on here turning green with envy!

I too thought Mansfield would go up, but they effectively did what we did - signed some thirty something forwards and expected everything to click into gear instantly. It wasn't meant to be, and when you consider almost ALL fans on here believe Bowyer held us back, well, 9th place is hardly a death sentence for this season, is it?

I get that the squad is looking thin on paper, but I'm not concerned about it. I don't see any reason why our squad as it stands right now isn't top 6-7.

One of the best footballing sides last season were Cheltenham yet on paper at the start I wouldn't have expected that.

 

What total rubbish Fordy. Yes the pre-season results are meaningless but the performances in those games are far from meaningless.

 

Considering most around 12-14 players that finished 9th in what I thought was an extremely poor league. We should have been in an automatic spot but no we finished 9th.

The only bonus is Bowyer isn't here because he was just awful as a manager but we have McCall who we all love but he needs to prove himself.

We've lost Vaughan and replaced him so far with Billy Clarke. So for me as I say CURRENTLY we are shite because I can only base it on last season and the transfers we have made so far just look bang average.

The key to next season is McCall - He just has to show he is a good manager that can take a team over the line to success.

Nothing at all suggests we are a bad side, of course the defence needs to tighten up but good defences generally do when they're kept together.

I'd hope we'd be looking at Paudie taking the lead next year, Wood is definitely good enough, and AOC performed way beyond expectations under both managers. AOC/BRE didn't really seem to work, but get Paudie back in the Davies role of winning every header like he was in L1, and he could be a real asset.

Depending on what formation Stuart is playing, we have four forwards who are all experienced and have scored goals at this level - which as I've pointed out before, is something hardly anyone in L2 can boast, regardless of one or two sides having one or two very highly rated forwards,

 

Sometimes I think you say things Fordy just to wind people up. Billy Clarke wasn't signed to replace Vaughan. As for 12/14 players here only got us to 9th last season, those players were only part of a squad. The players that have gone were the main culprits when it comes to the weakness of last season's poor performances.

Billy Clarke played as a forward last season an Cooke will be our AM. Clarke was signed when during City and Tranmere discussing Vaughan. Vaughan left a few weeks after Clarke signed.

We have Clarke, Donaldson, Novak and Guthrie -4 forwards! How many more do you want?

McCall has said he isn't in a rush to replace Vaughan as yet but my feeling is because Clarke is his replacement.

In terms of the 9 players here are you including ROD, DMH? I guessed 12-14 to be honest but I think we are currently shit but a few more decent signings might change my mind but in truth I think the club is in a mess.

 

Fordy always expects the worst, but it's because he's passionate about City - there's no real perspective in over analysing City, though.

Whether we're better or worse than last season is moot when 18+ teams are struggling worse than we are.

@JonButterfield what changes in 12 months when you were like no we can't finish automatic now we can take on the world? I don't understand about from Bowyer leaving why you so excited now?

 

I was disappointed with how Paudie performed last season, He is better than that. If he concentrates on winning his headers (like Andrew Davies did) and dominating the center of defence he could form a good partnership with AOC. Then we will have a solid base to build on.
