I have never once mentioned budget but you seem obsessed with it as most city fans do. It’s a fallacy

It helps attract a certain player but I’d sooner have a squad all paid a similar wage which has good versatility all over than the shower we have been served up this season

Every time we have a big budget it leads to a lopsided squad.

Only manager to have spent a budget well was Jewell but even then his initial squad was put together on not a massive outlay. But he spent money well throughout the season to keep us up there

Was this before or after PP got us promoted with a large league 2 budget?

I merely pointed out that there’s no evidence yet to back up the comment that he’s “a decent assistant manager”. This was based on the fact that this is his first time in the role and we saw nothing in the short term to suggest he was ‘decent’. He may well be, but we didn’t get to chance to see it.

The difference between him and Bowyer is that the latter has proved himself in the role, albeit elsewhere....!

I don't care what Bowyer has done as other clubs. I care more about you in your phonebox than what Bowyer has done at Blackpool or Blackburn etc but so far at Bradford City he has FAILED! He's been SHITE!

So, if you're judging Todd then Bowyer needs to be judged too at Bradford.

However, saying all this it doesn't mean Bowyer won't come good here. He has a 2 year contract.

It really doesn't matter what you think of Todd though the other point you miss is that if Bowyer wanted Todd to stay then he should be staying.

This will give you all an interesting view of football ownership and financing.

I was speaking to a chap today at work who used to be on the board at Brentford until recently.

Brentford, decent mid table championship team I think most of us would say yet in achieving that mid table effort their owner has apparently ploughed £120m into the club in the last 5 years.

The days of sentimental fans thinking they can own a football club have waaaaay gone. Owning a football club is not a joke and is not profitable.

As I said Flynn has been there 4 years 2 of them as manager so most if not all his playing staff will be players he brought to Newport.
Last season Rahic brought big earners in expecting them to gel under Collins, I dont believe if it had been a tried and tested manager those players would have gelled.
So going back to your original question if Newport get promoted I would think they will be delighted if they finish 5th bottom if league one, where as Bowyer with a top 3 budget should have us in a challenging position for a play off place.
I doubt the likes of Scannell, Akpan, Doyle will be with us so maybe that will give Bowyer a little more leverage with regards incoming players.

    I agree.

The expectations of Flynn will be similar to Bowyer - first and foremost, don't get relegated!

Matthew Benham, Brentford's owner is seriously wealthy and is a long term Brentford fan. He isn't one who is looking to make a quick return from his investment in his club but seems to be in it for the long run. He made his fortune in online betting and now uses that same analytical and statistical approach to the football side of Brentford (and at his other club in Denmark). And at both clubs that analytics and statistical approach is apparently starting to pay off.

And yes, having an owner like Benham (and others like him) who is willing to dig deep into his own pockets puts our own situation into perspective and is something we can only dream about!

Surely he can not hope to ever recoup £120m.

I doubt it very much and I'm not sure he expects to in the near future. His only way of making a return would be to do a Dean Hoyle and reach the land of milk and honey, aka the Premier League, and trust that Brentford have a slightly longer stay than Town have managed!

Did any of the reports say how much Hoyle sold for?

Football ownership and investment and making a profit is for the birds. As @Dennis@Dennis and others have stated on many occasions the only place you can make money is the PL.

The structure of the football leagues, and how they make money and generate funds to finance the running a football club is falling apart, with football clubs going to the wall, or running and increasing debt being the norm if clubs want to compete. I can only assume that the PL and EFL will wake up at some point, but I am not confident it will be in time.

The sale is ongoing, and will be finalised early June - I expect any figures to be released at that time. ;)

Completely right. The price Rupp paid was for a team:

    • in the playoffs in League 1
    • a hugely supportive fan base
    • a manager with a proven track record (Parky)
    • a loyal and able backroom team
    • five or six years of progress
    • a squad of players team with guts, determination and team spirit
    • a club that players and managers wanted to be involved with

    What he has now is:

    • a League 2 club with unknown potential (could go down again)
    • a team that has a proven track record of complete failure
    • a fan base that is struggling to keep interested
    • a decimated backroom team
    • a manager who is struggling to prove himself so far
    • a club where managers and players may be worried about committing to
    • an 18 month run of nothing but regression and failure
As far as a saleable asset is concerned there is absolutely no comparison and any buyer will recognise that.

The truth is that Rahic has cost Rupp probably seven million in terms of additional investment, and the depreciation of the initial asset/investment (i.e. the club) and that is just so far. If over the close season Rupp is to throw in some more money then that loss, as it currently stands, could end up being ten million plus. Ouch!

Not sure I missed any point. I have stated that I was concerned that Bowyer wasn’t allowed to keep the man he brought in to assist him. I raised my concerns that the money isn’t available for him. Why do you always try to start an argument?

My point was simply that a person in his first role had done nothing to prove he could do the job. Do you think we should give Michael Collins and her chance to prove we were wrong to question his appointment?

I know Simon Parker has to fill his columns but the "when I was at Blackpool" articles are becoming tedious. I would like to see a statement from the owner or acting CEO about plans for the future.
