To your second point, I’ve often said - and it’s never been more true than today - that if they didn’t speak English in the US, we’d collectively see them as just as dysfunctional as we see the likes of Russia or China.

 

Chickens coming home to roost, or, as the Bible put it a few thousand years ago: they who sow the wind shall reap the whirlwind. There's been four years of pandering to the worst instincts of a certain type of Trumpite, two months now of pouring gas on that fire, and to cap it all, at today's "Save America" rally first Giuliani mentioned that they needed trial by combat, and Trump later talked about marching to the Capitol and that people would have to be strong...

If there is any good coming out of this, it does seem to have woken up some of those who had attached themselves to Trump's train. Some, but not all, alas... Objections to the Electoral College votes continue.

One representative is preparing articles of impeachment, and the House Judiciary committee, amongst others, is suggesting VP Pence should investigate invoking the 25th Amendment, which allows for the removal of a President who is unfit for duty. Even at this late date, it would be good to see either come to pass.

I must say that the coverage on CNN has been really good.

Apparently the Capitol rioters were really Antifa activists dressed up as MAGA types in order to make Trump and his supporters look bad.
You couldn't make it up. But they do anyway.

Spot on. Scared white people seeing their total dominance of US society eroded and reacting with violence. And their representative - the GOP - is now a minority party desperately trying to cling to power by gerrymandering and voter suppression designed to limit the non-white vote as much as it possibly can.

Seriously? That's what happens when armed mobs turn up with guns and start a riot.

How do you account for the fact that there were hundreds of riot police and national guard shipped in, who teargassed a peaceful, unarmed, BLM rally in Washington, so that Trump could pose with a Bible to impress the white midwestern Christian fundamentalists. But when a bunch of armed, angry MAGA types announce in advance that they are going to congregate outside the Capitol building to protest the election 'steal', there are no riot shields, no national guard brought in - just a thin blue line of ordinary cops who were so outnumbered and outgunned they virtually waved the mob into the building.

This speaks volumes about the way white America perceives the 'threat' of legitimate black protest and faces it down with force, but persistently looks the other way and tolerates the actions of heavily armed white supremacist thugs (or in Trump's case, actively encourages them).

Whereas you appear to have missed my point completely.

Yes, of course I'm well aware that there were riots in some cities, but I was comparing two pre-arranged demonstrations in the same part of the same city - outside the Capitol in Washington.

One was the completely peaceful BLM march in Washington that was confronted with hundreds of riot police & national guard, brought in in advance for the occasion, that was teargassed to give Trump a photo opportunity.
The other was a pre-planned right wing demo by MAGA activists. Despite knowing that many of these people have been threatening violent resistance on social media for months, and that many would have guns, the powers that be somehow didn't bother bringing in the riot police or national guardsmen in advance, but instead relied on the usual compliment of Capitol security, who were totally overwhelmed by the mob.

Why were they so scared of the BLM demo but totally ignored the much bigger threat from the tooled up white rednecks?

 

Err, no actually.
Look around you. Most of the world is falling over itself to condemn Trump's incitement to violence and encouragement of white supremacists. The international press is full of it.
But you keep believing the world according to the Mail and the Express.

 

I think we can safely say that any prospect of him getting the GOP nomination again in 2024 is now dead and buried.

 

But where were they in the summer when a certain sector of the population were rioting and burning down their own communities.. ?

 

Reporting it. At least they were in the media I read.
But they were also analysing the reasons why that was happening.
Of course that wouldn't interest you because you're only concerned with superficial 'succinct' answers to complex problems.

What happened yesterday doesn’t bother me one bit. In fact, let them crack on. It’s all a lovely, perfect end to his whole tenure, watching the oaf squirm, trying to find any thread that he can cling to that might enable him to stay in power, while the rest of the world look on and piss themselves laughing knowing he’s just making himself look even more of a tw@t, and all the while those that followed him self destruct. It’s absolutely glorious.
