It hurts but Millwall hurt more for me so that gives me my final answer.

I have a connection with Bradford and Bradford City, even though I have spent all bar five years of adult life living away, for all the problems the City has, it’s still home. Bradford City got me from the first game in 1983 right through to today. I can’t change the club I support, it’s easier to change gender. An England win will fade away, but if I wasn’t at a game, I remember where I was for all of City’s big moments. City first for me.

I don't think being English per se gets slated. I think aspects of some English behaviour get slated - eg racist, yobbish behaviour - but that behaviour is by no means limited to the English.
I also think that some people (often deliberately, for political reasons) label anyone with a consciousness about our chequered history and a dislike of overt nationalism/British exceptionalism as being ashamed of being English, which is nonsense.
As you know, I was a staunch remainer and a proud European, but I'm also very pleased to have been born in this country, proud of the myriad good things about it (past and present) and very proud to support my national sporting teams.

Berlin is a fantastic City, Charlottenburg is especially beautiful, and is the old British section of the city, because of this you can still spot little English touches like UK traffic lights. Because of its history a bigger percentage of the older population speak English than other parts of the City so you get to strike up conversations with locals especially in some of the bars and cafes.
Parisians are painted as arrogant and distant, no one likes to make eye contact and in the main people are rushing about & don’t have time to speak to you.........virtually identical to London!!
Just like London, if you peel away the top layer you can find extremely welcoming friendly locals who will bend over backwards to help you.
What the Germans & Parisians hate are English oafs who turn up in replica football shirts, sing 10 German bombers and act like they own the place!

And yet no one kneels for these poor bastards. Don't see any players coming out and denouncing the relevant governing bodies or Qatar itself. The hypocrisy would be quite amusing bar the fact thousands of life's are either gone or spend their time being persecuted for their way of life.

I have to admit, Bradford getting to the League Cup final v England making the Euro's final. As chuffed as I was last night, it was nothing compared to the night at Villa Park.

I was ten. I was away in Holland on a camping trip. Had to listen to the final on the radio.

BTW, who in the media has ever suggested that being English is something to be ashamed of?

Having got this far, I think I'm now tipping towards England winning on Sunday than City getting promotion this season, if I couldn't have both. City will have opportunities every year in a league format to get promoted if they are good enough. The rub of the green evens itself out over a long season. But in a knockout competition the chances of misfortune, dodgy decisions etc ruining the run are much greater so I'm going for England now we've got to the final.

Bit of a sweeping generalisation there.
Not all Guardian readers and/or remainers have the same views about such things.
In my experience, as a fully paid up remainer and Guardian reader, it's not patriotism that is disliked, it's jingoism, xenophobia and the desire to return to a pre-multicultural Britain that has long since disappeared, if it ever existed.

Not for me. As much as I would love England to do it tonight and being very patriotic, the fact is, I've never seen England play live, so as a football team, I haven't got anywhere near the same affinity I have for City.

Whatever the result tonight, for me, it will be time to move on and look forward to the new season.

Having the match at 8 pm at the weekend was a huge mistake. It meant that there was a vast amount of time for the idiots involved to have far too much to drink. It was bound to end in tears.

I’ve already apologised once. I should have known better than having a bit of fun on a Saturday night. I’ll write that out 50 times tomorrow.

I can't disagree with that, Rhodes was never a person that could push a football club forward. Sparks does understand that the fundamentals of a successful organisation is in the level of detail and professionalism within that organisation. One could question the long term ambition of our present owner but for now that doesn't matter. What does matter is here and now and how the club approaches the oncoming season.
