Regarding your comment on being English it depends what narrative the said Journalist/MP/celebrity is pushing down our throats. Being English gets slated in the press regularly although it more amuses me as appose to annoys me as I'm not overly patriotic.

 

Would love England to win tomorrow, as I'm old enough to remember watching the 1966 World Cup Final, and the euphoric feeling this gave the whole country for months afterwards. However, if I had to pick between the two it would be City, who I first saw live in 1961, getting promotion every time.

 

I don't think being English per se gets slated. I think aspects of some English behaviour get slated - eg racist, yobbish behaviour - but that behaviour is by no means limited to the English.
I also think that some people (often deliberately, for political reasons) label anyone with a consciousness about our chequered history and a dislike of overt nationalism/British exceptionalism as being ashamed of being English, which is nonsense.
As you know, I was a staunch remainer and a proud European, but I'm also very pleased to have been born in this country, proud of the myriad good things about it (past and present) and very proud to support my national sporting teams.

 

I agree with that bit that wasn't clear in your original post. Believe me, there are people of English descent who have been seething every game that England have won because of their distain of Johnson or Brexit. Quite how they link a football team to stuff like that is be musing, hell there was even a famous celebrity 'DR' who claimed racism because the media chose to put Kane on their front pages instead of Sterling. Each to their own little world I guess.

 

On the other side as well there's a lot of reverse ferreting going on from the people who where advocating booing the players now too, who I'm sure would have been happy for us to lose to prove their point. Best thing is to ignore the lot of them, both sides are saying deliberately controversial things to wind people up and get more clicks.

 

I suspect that most of those people aren't football fans. I can understand why a lot of people on the left (including many of my Facebook friends) are worried that if England win the Euros then Johnson, and the right wing media, will try to hijack it for jingoistic/Brexit justification purposes, despite the fact that their values are the polar opposite of this England team's inclusivity stance .
I share that concern, but I'm a dyed in the wool England football supporter so I still want us to win it.

 

A similar comment has been made many many times over the years with regards when England won the World Cup whilst Labour were in power, but now because the boot is on the other foot the occasion could/will be high-backed by your above mentioned, you never miss a chance to put the boot in, let it go were out of the EU and will have a Tory government for at least another six years.

 

I do ignore them, I was just pointing out an inaccuracy. These days I worry not about others but myself. I leave politics and the like to others.

They all do it left and right, Marxist was trending the other day on Twitter. 100s of left wingers posting how England had done so well once we started bending the knee, and thousands were retweeting and liking the tweets.
Labour would also do the same if they were in power.

Do I like it? No I’m not a big fan of politics in sport as it’s a decisive subject and no one should have a particular ideology forced upon them. That said do I blame Tories/Marxists or Labour had they got in? No again as positive publicity is always going to be milked if it suits your agenda/ideology.

 

I know that we're out of the EU and we are likely to have a Tory government for another six years. I've no choice but to accept those things, even if I hate them. That's not the issue.

This government and what it stands for, are light years away from the values espoused by Southgate, Sterling, Rashford et al. It will be the height of hypocrisy if they jump on the football bandwagon (which they otherwise have no interest in whatsoever, being largely a bunch of public school rugger-buggers) and try to use it for their own jingoistic purposes. But then hypocrisy and this government go hand in glove.

And as for 'never miss an opportunity' - I have been unusually quiet on the political/Brexit front for months. I've seen lots of opportunities to post critical material but have chosen not to, because banging my head against a brick wall becomes tedious after a while.

You’ll have to ask those on Twitter who were putting it’s down to Marxist ideology that the England team are doing so well, how would I know? I can only think it’s a comment put to the creator of the BLM movement.

The likes of Rushford should be praised for his involvement in free school meals etc, not sure your other comment is correct, I've not seen any of the present government attending games, only the usual suspects who because of who they are seem to be constant faces at high profile occasions.
