Trouble is people see Clarke as a striker. He is however more of an advanced midfielder and he does use the ball well. Unfortunately he us just like Payne and one or two others and is not what we needed

Yes that's what I was trying to say although it may have been lost in translation, Hopkin took the reigns for the Blackpool game our 7th game on 8th September and we were in 17th place with 6 points Table 3.jpg that's the part I was trying to make, even accepting many in our squad are not up for the fight it's not like David Hopkin took over when we were anchored to the bottom of the league ;).

I think it's pretty obvious why I've made the comparison.

Jones Imo would have been a better option to have than Clarke for the reasons stated above and it's all related to a post I made about Hopkin's January dealings.

Both are injury prone. IMHO I would have neither in my relegation fighting squad.

Did you mean Clarke was injury prone?

    First I've heard of it.

He played 76 times in his previous two seasons with us.

Alex Jones on the other hand...

    It’s not obvious at all.

You’ve picked someone who’s scored 5 goals in the time he’s been with us, is never fit and stated we should take a gamble on him? Why? Still doesn’t make sense.

jones is never fit and never hardly scores yet he scores more than Clarke who’s played tonnes more games than him yes but has scored 60 goals in his career. And he’s not even a striker.

    Baffling comparison

But we had a similar step back in Parky's first season

You need to remember that mentally a lot of the players are just gone. We saw that in the first half. Credit to Hopkin for rallying them around and also Clarke who reminded us what a great character he was and why we had our three best seasons in the last 15, when he was around

It's not going to be a upward improvements with no setbacks. The sides from Fleetwood down are too similar in ability for that to happen

It's for those reasons why I would in an ideal world have had neither. As I said above,i would have preferred us to get rid of Jones, not sign a Billy Clarke type player and bring in a genuine striker but, Jones in comparison to Clarke would have been the better option as we have 3 players who can play as an attacking midfielder and Jones if fit could potentially bring more to the team (better goal scorer, better utility player etc). You might not agree with my standpoint, fair enough, but it's a perfectly valid reason for preferring one player to the other and is only baffling if you're a moron.

The fact we were offered two target men but opted for Clarke tells you a lot about January. Mostly, it’s only dross that’s available.

    Paul Smyth isn't dosh.

Players are available in Jan. It smacks of a poor excuse to say they're not.

We clearly didn't want to spend the money that's the problem.

Either way we didn't need Clarke and should of concentrated of other areas. We didn't need Butterfield either come to think of it.

Our business in the Jan window was nothing but a shambles

Forget the target man, simply bringing in a specialist striker would have been a better option to Billy Clarke. Doyle has next to no competition for his place and he's been under par for most of the season.

We're second from bottom in league one and people like @EwanJM@EwanJM are telling us that no better players are available.

    You joking me?

Isn't Ball a striker? Isn't it time we tried him upfront with Doyle?

For the money we’ll pay. We went in for a striker but the fact we are where we are was a factor why he didn’t come. Accrington funded Smyth from the TV money they got from the Derby game and we invested wages in Payne so again, it depends on different clubs circumstances. It’s not FIFA 19.

How much we paying Butterfield? Reported to be on around 30k week at Derby.

    How much we paying Payne?

How much we paying P O' Connor?

    How much we paying Anderson?

    How much we paying Clarke?

    How much we paying Woods?

Point is your seem full of excuses. Apart from 2 of them players we didn't need. We wasted money. We could and should of spent our money better.

You failed to answer the question! Are you telling me that they're no better players than we've in Jan?

Why didn't we look for alternatives in key areas that we needed like a winger if the footballing world has no better forwards available in Jan?
