When do we start to question Hopkin?

Yes, I'd rather we signed a striker because we needed one. What phantom goalscoring record have i made up? When fit, i think Jones' goalscoring record is a good one. This is backed up by his goals to minutes ratio. The reason Jones comes into the debate is because we could have kept him but preferred Clarke.

You're right Fordy, the money we are paying to O'Connor, Anderson and Clarke would've been better going on either a striker, winger or centre half who's good enough. We didn't have fortunes to spend in January but we had some money and we've spent it on shite just like in the summer.

 

Again missed the point. There are probably plenty of players out there better than what we have. That doesn’t mean they are 1) available 2) willing 3) priced correctly. January is a sellers market. I’m not making excuses, I just understand that not everything is as cut and dry as you make it out to be.

 

The fact is we desperately needed a better centre back, striker and a winger, We got none of them and are likely to pay the price for a really poor January transfer window where given the one chance in the season to make the changes needed to escape we brought in more of what we had instead of more of what we needed, We can beat about the bush as to how this happened but Hopkin is the manager and so the buck stops with him

 

EwanJM's post above yours sums it up I think. Yes Hopkin might be partly to blame, but it is equally possible that no one better was available and willing to come

 

All very true but he said he was ready, he said we would have players in, he knew who his targets were and he knew what positions to fill. I very much doubt that most of our signings were his targets. I know it's difficult and I know he said we missed out on so many but he had a lot of time to target various players and different options.

It seems like he has a Plan A in everything and not just on the pitch.

 

I agree. If we missed out on his targets and are left with the sweep ups then don't sign anyone. I think everyone knew that as the window was closing and we started signing these players that they weren't the right players in the right positions and definitely don't sign injury prone players.

 

I think Hopkin has to be to blame for any transfer failings in January, he had complete control of the transfers after all - and let me preface this by saying i absolutely love Billy Clarke, I think he's a brilliant footballer, and I'm delighted hes back...however if, as Hopkin had previously said, we needed a striker, a targetman then why did he turn down Sammon, and add Billy? that doesn't make sense.

if he was desperate for a target man, then why wouldn't you add Sammon, he might not be much cop, but at least he's a unit, and a specialist in that position.. now we're trying to fit square pegs in round holes, and trying to play a system that suits a targetman we haven't got.

 

If he's failing, why wait til the end of the season. Get this right coach in you and Lineker keep talking about. (Does a coach exist that's right for Fordy?) Where's your ambition laddie?

Yes but that's not the whole story is it? We don't know what was in his mind that led him to pass on Sammon. Our recent transfer record has seen many examples of buying in haste and repent at leisure types of signings and in many ways it's the reason we are where we are. Quite refreshing to see someone with the bottle to say no thanks, we'll stick with what we've got and wait for the right player to come along.
