In general, you will actually find most foreign fans refer to United as just Manchester. I think it's generally the case of whoever is the most widely known generally gets the privilege of getting to use just the name of the city/town itself if there is more than 1 club with the name of the place in its name.

So in your case, as you are the most well-known club in the city you have earned the privilege of people calling you just Bradford and even if BPA were to go on a promotion run and get ahead of you it would still take a few decades before name wise they were the bigger club and would be justified with the name of the city being synonymous with them

Seems like some of the people on here don't want us to be just Bradford for some reason although I think realistically we are known as Bradford all over the country

I imagine you probably were at some point, after all, you are a pretty old club and it back in the day nicknames weren't as inventive and clubs unique identities only mattered within the the city/town really. City certainly aren't the only club to have used Citizens, they are the only one that really jumps out that still use it but I would hazard a guess most clubs with City in their name at one point used it but one by one it died out as branding became more and more important over the years.

Just to highlight this kind of thing, if you say 'You're never Walk alone' you instantly think Liverpool. That however was something they adopted after Gerry and the pacemakers recorded a version in 1963. However, its a song that was written in the 40's and in the 50's it was a common song sang across a number of football grounds, including Old Trafford, infact it was only something dropped when Liverpool adopted it as by the 60's clubs were starting to move towards where we are now where it's important that things that identify them be it songs or nicknames are unqiue

    Thanks Simon.
I would be intrigued to discover , via our fan based historians, if we have ever been given the name.
I don’t ever recall reading so , just curious.

Thanks Storck, very interesting. It’s not mentioned in the books I have, but certainly reflects “Paraders” which I pointed out previously and citizens.

The fact that these names were made up by the “Parker’s” of the time, makes a lot of sense.
What doesn’t make sense to me is Joe public at the time won’t have likely used those terms and I honestly believe, it was “t’City”, used in everyday life in homes, workshops , mills and factories of the time?

Thanks Rod, I have probably got that copy in my loft?

So it does appear, reading the JD blog earlier these are “ journalism “ names tagged to City and Avenue rather than names used in day to day life.

    Historically interesting.

Thanks USG, just seen the JD blog. I had no intention to contradict, sorry if it came across as such. I never ever genuinely heard anyone use the term. I know I’m old but not as old as the 19th century.lol!

It's interesting, cos now I think about it, my Grandad and Grandma always referred to us as "City". Never Bradford. I suppose this is because they grew up when both teams had an identity in football (not saying Avenue now don't...but you know what I mean). If someone asks who I support, I always say "Bradford City", regardless of the fact that they don't know Park Avenue exist or not (not saying Avenue don't....but over here in Estonia it's an achievement if someone has even heard of Bradford as in the residential city or football club). If I was to answer "City" - then they'd automatically think I was referring to Manchester City, because let's face it, they are much more well known to fairweather football fans. Geography pays a big part in this. In a macro and micro sense, I can understand that if I was living in the city of Bradford, I'd make a specific point of saying Bradford City/Bradford, but remote from the region, I think just "Bradford" is acceptable. Using my example of Manchester City, you couldn't get away with living in Manchester, and saying you support "Manchester". You'd have to be more precise. And such is their global identity, you couldn't get away with saying to someone outside of Manchester/England/The UK, that you support "Manchester" without the person asking "which one?" To really confuse them - and to put this into Park Avenue context, you could answer "F.C United" :)

I agree the older end alway distinguished which Bradford club they supported by a City or Avenue reply, since Avenue fell out of the football league it's not as relevant as many (ignorant people ;)) people don't know of BPA.
I certainly wouldn't pull an fellow poster because he refers to us as Bradford.

My old fella always talks about City or Avenue, never has mentioned Bradford when talking about either of them.

My dad and me used to get the Football special bus or trollybus from Tyrrell Street up to Horton Park Avenue, I remember a row of buses parked up outside the ground. I also remember getting separated from dad and getting taken up to the Doll's House from where I watched the game and my Dad picked me up at the end of the game. Also changing ends at halftime. However I've been happily (most of the time) following Bradford City for 47 years now.

Both clubs have played in the top division (if my memory isn't playing tricks on me).

Now I’m questioning wether or not I should take this vintage badge off my jacket I’m currently wearing.
But as pointed out, no one knows the difference anyway outside Bradford. I suspect given the colours, that this is possibly a Bradford Northern badge from the 60s/70s. Although, Avenue also wore these colours during some time in between green and white.
Anyway, I like it and DE433E4B-187D-4C78-A8F5-1128129EB4CE.jpeg that’s all that counts :) (but I’ll remove it when attending a City game!).

About 300+ (plus my brother who now resides in Bavaria). A lot of their fan's descendants are now Beeston United's fans as quite a few of their dad's (and grandads) preferred to follow them rather than switch Bradford City when Avenue went out of the football league.

Living out of Bradford I have found myself replying 'Bradford' now if asked, but when in Bradford it's 'City'
