Has played about 40 games in 3 seasons. Would be just us all over if we signed him up with the salary cap too.

I'll own up it's me who wanted Connolly back. A couple of years back I also spent a lot of time on here singing the praises of Hiwula. I did also defend Chicksen but maybe I got that one wrong!
The thing is someone with Connolly's pace makes things happen. I don't even see him as just a winger. Yes I agree he could be a bit of a headless chicken but even if he isn't scoring or assisting directly, he panics defences and creates space and opportunities for others. With regards to Hiwula, i think he was our top scorer even thoughhe was regularly dropped after scoring!. Like someone said, maybe Stuart just didn't fancy him.......or was it tied to appearance bonuses

Could be waiting a while for loans this year. Window is very long compared to normal.
As I’ve said I think we are way short of a decent squad. Could be a long old season particularly if we get any sort of injuries

    Bollocks! Just stop it!

We already knew about Dylan and Richard. That wasn't proactive.

Even Clarke, he was dying not to move outside of Yorkshire.

We've basically encouraged 3 new players to come. Let's put it like that. The other 3 needed little encouragement.

When Wyke left one thing I’ll credit Rahic with is we already had Doyle lined up. The signing didn’t work, but when you’re losing your top scorer it’s important to be doing business at the same time to bring a replacement in. It doesn’t bother me so much that Vaughan is leaving, if he doesn’t want to be here it’s counter productive to keep him, but as soon as we knew he wanted out we should have been working out how to have virtually no overlap between him leaving and the new signing. Sadly although hope I’m wrong I doubt we’ve even approached anyone yet. And hope it’s not Dennis, he’s been garbage everytime I’ve seen him play since pizza gate.

    How about this one:

    Jacob Butterfield

Personally not fussed about bringing him back as he didn't exactly do much in his first spell (albeit in that god-awful team) and not sure he'd want to drop to lg2, but he's been released by Luton, still a good age and is a local lad. Believe he would count towards having a home grown player for when Donaldson is inevitably injured also.

If we could get him cheap, maybe?

One of the national league players we have shown a interest in (again) is callum (cal) roberts (according to his dad) of Notts county who we would have to pay a nominal fee for as he is under contract.
We invited him to train with us last pre-season but chose to sign part time terms with Blyth Spartans subsequently moving to Notts county on a free transfer.

Bolton are signing players as part of a project and using stats and data to back up players who they sign. Names and reputations do not matter if you have a system, a manager well on board with it and a good scouting team who know what you’re looking for. And let’s be fair some of our best players have come from non-league in recent years. Meredith/Hanson etc

I think of our signings so far Watt and Cooke look the pick but still to me means we are short of one hard man in midfield to give us some steel to supply two ball players.
We have no real wingers. Plan B looks none existent if we get bogged down in the middle.
The same back 2 CB’s as last year who as the season went on got worse. Maybe other clubs had them watched?

A very good left back but cover? No real right back

strikers who aside from vauaghn don’t look much cop and are all similar style. No pace for that bit of something different.

I’d say we need 5 or 6 in but McCall doesn’t agree. I think we will be easy on the eye but with very little cutting edge. Much like McCall’s first stint here. Hope I’m wrong

Well he obviously wants a move there. He is constantly liking anything by Tranmere, Everton and Wigan. Absolutely zero on City!

I would have loved Spearing at City. He does like his clubs in the north west though.

Unfortunately we signed him about 3 years too late.

Be outrage on here if we had signed him.

But Bolton going for it ...

Vaughan scored 14 league goals last season, and that included jumping up a division. He had very little service, and was obviously frustrated by his/our performances.

It's realistic to think he could score 15-20 in a more attacking/better performing side.

Donaldson hasn't been scoring many in years, but Novak has shown he's capable of hitting double figures in the past and came very close last season. To target 10-12 goals is again pretty realistic.

I am not a fan of Guthrie, but he's also scored double figures in three of his last four seasons.

I think you'd struggle to name a side with four strikers as versed in scoring as those four. In terms of multiple double-figure league seasons, Salford don't have them; Bolton don't have them; I'm not sure anyone does?

I guarantee if Bolton had come down and signed Vaughan, Donaldson, Novak and Guthrie, people would be assuming they had the strength in depth to score the goals necessary for promotion.

I don't really see how, if Vaughan stays, there's any other argument?

I see quite a few people citing Guthrie’s stats but they are not actually that great. Even the season where he scored 14 in 38, he scored 3 of those against the Swansea kids in a Checkatrade game. Take that out and his ‘prolific’ season equates to 11 in 37 which is neither here or there. Either side of that he scored 5 in 28 last season and 1 in 12 in 2017/18. Shocking returns.

This is a player coming off a season where Hope Akpan nearly out scored him and sorry to go over old ground again but was surplus to requirements for the worst professional football team in the country. Plenty of cause for concern with this one.

Donaldson can’t finish for shit and then there’s Novak who about 1 in 4 at best.

Taking into consideration that Vaughan and Donaldson are probably the highest earners in the squad and we paid money for Novak and Guthrie the talent in our front line does not justify the amount of money we’ve spent assembling it.

Looked like a high class Championship striker when he was missing 3 yard sitters.

Yer but there's a salary cap etc etc etc

So it's hard to find a good replacement etc etc etc

Players need to be more realistic about their wages these days etc etc etc

But because they're not, we're proud to introduce Joe Slade, last season's record goal scorer at Goole Town with 12. We've got high hopes for him.

p.s. If it weren't for the salary cap we'd have agreed a deal with Ravel Morrison.

Yup the value of pace is an interesting one, we have one poster on here who loved Connelly last season for that very fact and would like to see him back. The best crosser of a ball we have had in recent years in the wing position was probably Summerbee and he certainly wasn't a speed merchant, Beckham was probably the same for England and much of the crossing quality now comes from full backs who push on (Alexander-Arnold, Robinson, Chilwell etc).
Agree with your comment about the strikers, as someone said in another post the key is positional strength - if they can outwit the defender and decent balls are coming into the box then they will always be a handful, even if they are not blessed with natural pace

Talking of pace, I'd take Jordy Hiwula back. Although not the best finisher, he does still weigh in with a fair share of goals, and I think would be very good at this level. Don't know if clubs have been in for him this summer, do seem to recall he was released by Coventry?
