I've been reading the blogs of this woman for a bit now, very thought provoking stuff regarding women and religion. Our country might not be perfect, nowhere is, but in terms of rights and freedom its light years ahead of a lot of places in the world.

Splendidly written. I also totally agree.

And, not my words but I also wholeheartedly agree:
We are fortunate to live in one of the most tolerant societies that has ever existed. Although there are still some problems, by seeing absolutely everything through the prism of race, gender and sexuality we are generating further division in the name of progress.

I fear the social media narrative has gone so far that we could pretty much eliminate racism in theory but that still wouldn't be enough. Even the death of Prince Philip paints a picture, the edgy generation looking for every racist angle they can find to berate a 99 year old fella that has passed away. I'd like to think that most of these commentators on social media are in fact a complete irrelevance, unfortunately those very platforms make these people feel more influential than they actually are. All about the likes innit.

She’s more an example of a failing educational system, someone should tell her that cows are female. Milking a bull would likely bring out an entirely different fluid...

I think the flip side of that is, if a person's mindset is fixated that any challenges they encounter are because of race (or gender, or any other 'category') then that lens is the paradigm through which you see the world. Racism does exist, of course, but I'd say that there's much more evidence of 'the system' NOT being institutionally racist.

This part hits the nail on the head for me:
'The report also said there is an "increasingly strident form of anti-racism thinking that seeks to explain all minority disadvantage through the prism of white discrimination" which it said diverted attention from "the other reasons for minority success and failure"

My brother in law has a degree from Durham University and teaches kids that go directly to Cambridge to study maths and physics yet i wouldn't trust him to boil a pan of water. Abbott is like most MPs, good at talking usually after doing a law degree but ultimately i get more intellectual debate reading Viz comic. I guess by the same logic applied in this thread Boris Johnson is a genius.

I could document the various building sites in Bradford over the years where white eastern european slave labour is used as a profit making cost cutting measure. Doesn't fit the narrative on social media who would rather demomise a certain section of the white demographic. By my very comments i must be a right wing racist.

Or maybe the difficulties and challenges faced by millions of British Citizens is much more complex than a simple matter of race. I think that's the crux of the report. Aspiring to a better and fairer society for all is exactly right. But they're not mutually exclusive points - it may be the case that many BAME people face challenges, as do many white ethic brits, but it isn't a given that the foundation of those challenges is institutional racism. Poverty, Social and Cultural factors, geographic factors, all play a huge part. These challenges won't be resolved by this enduring narrative of 'white oppression'. Its a lopsided argument.

Just remember surveys usually give the answer the organisation who pays wants to hear, They are skewed and unreliable based on a small selection and a very unreliable source of information that should be relied on,

I'm sure I heard a figure of 6 thousand had died. That's an outrage, but hey at least Belgium wore some tshirts denouncing those nasty people in charge. Fact is people all over the world are oppressed in the pursuit of riches for the wealthy. A look back through my family tree shows my mum's side of the family were destitute Irish where my great grandad came over here as young kid stowing away on a boat (seems that crossing the waters to come here also happened a long time ago) ended up in the Mills. My dad's side has always been pretty much penny less back in the day, again Mill workers although apparently we do have a link to aristocrasy. Unfortunately illegitametely lol. Damn that white privilege.

Interesting thread. We are all guilty of unconscious bias-so does that make us all racist?

Recently did some online learning on unconscious bias and found it very interesting. It's almost impossible not to do it but when you become aware of it and when you think about your everyday activities it gives you a real sense of awareness.

It's worth noting that black people officially only make up 3% of the population so any "under representation" needs to be judged against that statistical context.

I very much doubt it is millions. By your posts you seem to be in a left leaning Liberal elite bubble of people who wear the leftist badge as a matter of course to prove how fair and Liberal they are while not been of it in the middle class lifestyle they lead and have little in common with the vast majority of working class voters who now have seen the failings of the left and have decided to vote Tory ( not sure how that will work out ) But this country has always had a centre right leaning in its electorate,

Theres a reason why labour have been losing votes in traditional heartland areas. The Tories don't even have to run an election campaign next election, they could post Churchill the nodding dog in most consituencies and they'd still win as Labour destroy themselves from within. Apparently this is the worst government on record that has apparently killed over a hundred thousand people. And yet they'll still get in power at the next election. Labour can keep blaming who they want but until they start to act like a credible alternative to the Tories they'll still be the bickering bunch of hypocrites we all know and love.
