Just browsing twitter and i see this photo of a park i'm guessing from the first day of lockdown easing as the poster seems legitimate.
When i see this sort of thing it saddens me and makes me question if i was brought up right or if i am bringing my lad up right. In the grand schene of things its hardly a major problem but for me highlights what todays society has become, create a problem then expect someone else to deal with it. Even reading the comments astounds me, many justifying the piles of rubbish, this born from an ever increasing f*ck you i'll do what i want culture and where respect for others seems to diminish.

Keep on what your doing mate, but teach them to take no sh1t.
Trying to bring mine up to be kind, caring and considerate, but not to take any crap of anyone.

Walked with pooch in local park this morning. Litter and left food galore. Had to keep dog in her lead.

I'm hoping that this review opens the door for sensible discussion. Does racism exist? Of course. Is a problem? Absolutely. Is it the most significant barrier facing people in this country, is every challenge faced by someone driven by their race, is it the biggest obstacle to creating a better and fairer society? No.

As much as anything, just moving towards being able to have the discussion properly would be a huge step forward.

You never can have the discussion properly, not when there are a sea of social media volunteers trawling the oceans of twitter and Facebook looking to be offended. If I tend to listen to anyone these days it's Ricky Gervais. His take on things mirror my own pretty much perfectly wether it be animals, religion, society etc. I happen to tune into a discussion regarding racism by 'experts' in the subject on 5 live this morning. I stood 5 minutes then couldn't take anymore, institutionalised this covert that, there's a new term for racism every other week. The worst thing is the majority of people do not share the views of these 'experts', most are too busy just trying to get on with their lives l.

I like Gervais. Been to see him live too, very good.

And for a satirical look at things Jonathan Pie is very good. As is the Titania McGrath Twitter account.

Unfortunately its common place. 'Your opinion on race isn't valid because you're white'. or 'You can't really speak on feminist issues because you're a man'. The irony. My view is similar to yours in the sense that those who make the most noise and drama about equality, don't actually want it.

Easy to say it's not the most significant barrier if you aren't a black person receiving job discrimination, excessive police stop & search etc etc. For many people in this country being a person of colour most definitely is the most significant obstacle they face.

It's an absolute joke that this report claims institutional racism doesn't exist. No surprise that the two people appointed to lead it were already well known for their opposition to the idea of institutional racism.

This is the definition of a whitewash. It's an enquiry that has been set up to produce the report that the government wanted all along. It will do nothing to help deal with the barriers that many minority ethnic people face. It will simply help to further preserve the discriminatory status quo and further alienate minorities whose everyday lived experience is being dismissed.

The other side to the the report is of course that it highlights many of the wider socio-economic injustices in our society.

Which in general most people would currently agree with. Its therefore important to contextualise it.

For the last 10 years, and watching events from around the world, I've believed that our society is probably about as equitable on race as it has ever been and infornt of a lot of the world. Are there instances of racism, of course, but in general the report gives a much closer idea of my recently lived experiences than some of the sensationalist "everything is bad" ideas we sometimes hear.

I think the flip side of that is, if a person's mindset is fixated that any challenges they encounter are because of race (or gender, or any other 'category') then that lens is the paradigm through which you see the world. Racism does exist, of course, but I'd say that there's much more evidence of 'the system' NOT being institutionally racist.

This part hits the nail on the head for me:
'The report also said there is an "increasingly strident form of anti-racism thinking that seeks to explain all minority disadvantage through the prism of white discrimination" which it said diverted attention from "the other reasons for minority success and failure"

The report is spot on and a very good piece of work, Of course those wedded to the past who cannot move on from the past or are dedicated to defending racism and promoting its views for political or financial gain will denounce it, Unless we recognise the many parts of society that influence outcomes rather than the lazy call of blaming racism it will be hard to change those at the bottom of society for the better,
