How could they do a goal line tech angle when there was no overhead camera in use at Sunderland?

 

It’s ages since I did maths at school etc but I thought everything was meant to be at right angles. The line therefore goes directly up. if you can see grass and the ball went along the floor, If you keep moving directly up the gap stays the same. It’s not like local park goals when the crossbar is wonky.

 

So what you're saying is that if the line is visible then it is a goal?

 

Didn't Lee Bullock once score a 'goal' with a screamer that hit the bar and then bounced down about a foot in front of the goal.

Really annoying, it looks like it was a goal but these things happen. It is part of football. Mistakes happen.

 

Finally, some logic that makes sense. It is a question of diameter. Some people seem to think the ball has the diameter of a pea. For the last bit of the ball to be over the line I would expect to see a good 3 inches of grass over the line visible under the ball. People are seeing a line and saying 'look, it crossed the line!' However the last part of the ball would definitely be obscuring the line if a picture was taken from above. There is no way that from the picture on this thread that the full ball has crossed the line.

 

Not sure I have an opinion on this.

This is the best view you're going to get. I genuinely think some people don't understand what 'over the line' means'. Has the ball rolled across the line ie. the part of the ball touching the floor? Yes. You can see grass between the ball and the line. Is there any point where the full diameter of the ball is past the line? No chance. The more I watch this the more it isn't fully over.

 

Someone on the Sunderland forum was quoting this SSN ‘recreation’ and quoting this as gospel. I don’t believe though that it’s the actual view from the Hawkeye system.

I’m puzzled why the ref apologised to Drury, if we assume that suggestion is true. Could be a few things:

- Assistant decided he’d made a mistake soon after it happened/straight after the game, without looking at anything else

- Assistant has been provided the footage we’ve seen maybe (perhaps by their assessor) soon after the game and has decided he’s mistaken McL’s gloves for the ball/vice versa or similar (and so it’s a goal)

- Ref has been provided actual Hawkeye decision, if it was able to be provided (but of course wasn’t in use during the game)

Or he’s apologised without properly thinking about it! Who knows?

Just seems strange to apologise if he hasn’t seen conclusive proof it was in.

They froze the shot and rotated the picture to above the goal. Seen them do it for other stuff like referee viewing angles.

 

So JM isnt a cheat and shouldnt be ashamed of himself for his behaviour. Excellent.
