Wouldn't be surprised to see Colin Doyle retire his player registration meaning a new back up keeper will be in the pipeline.

 

I'll throw one out left field. As many of you know, I watch many Polish football games and it may be a problem due to work visa but we should have a look at Karol Czubak from Arka Gdynia. Only 23 and scoring for fun right now in the second league. Check him out on YouTube

 

Couple of right backs: Brian Mitchell and Stephen Wright were both very decent.

Ok I throw a couple of names in (pure guesswork with no info to suggest they are likely)

Johnny Wiiliams - Swindon - contract ends this summer
Joe Allen - Swansea - spending more time on the bench now

 

Both Welsh by any chance?

 

Think Williams would want to be a starter at his next club, for the momey he'd want, but he isn't getting ahead of Walker. Especially as Williams has a history of fitness issues and rarely finishes 90 minutes.

Allen is something I can see. Was one of Hughes' main men at Stoke, not working out anymore at Swansea. He looks to have done some coaching badges too, wonder if Allen is looking toward his next steps? Player/youth coach might be something he would like to finish up on? Similar to what Jay Spearing was doing at Tranmere for his last few seasons before calling time.

 

Looking at stats for this year the Halifax keeper looks half decent. Might not be a bad number 2 and cup keeper if Lewis is willing to have a rest

 

Upgrade on Clayton would be Allen-good for league 1

 

I'm not sure if we'd offer Clayton a contract in the summer. He's come in and done a great job in that role, but the current midfield 3 of Clayton, Gilliead and Smallwood would be ripped apart in my opinion.

 

An update on the Polish lad. Through my connections, I got an email from our head of recruitment today and unfortunately Czubak wouldn’t qualify for a visa.

 

Oh the benefits of freedom of movement…oh!

 

The midfield is easily our weakest area and one that should be prioritised regardless of the division we find ourselves in next year.

 

He isn't Scottish but one of our best signings from Scotland was McArdle from Aberdeen.

 

Everyone look out for him. He has everything a player needs in attack. He’s tall, strong and a goal scorer. No way Czubak doesn’t make it to a higher level

The older lads, Clayton in particular, have allowed us to tick over, but there's scope for massive improvement in there.

I can't imagine Hughes hasn't noticed that Smallwood has been a bit disappointing. He's even had to defend him at times, and express that he's happy with his contribution - not what you expect from a captain dropping down from a higher level.

Think he'll still favour experience in the centre of the park, but can't see it being Clayton/Smallwood in L1.
